Dolans Uyghur Cuisine
742 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91803, United States
Having lived and traveled extensively throughout Asia and Central Asia, I have tasted all and sundry dishes ranging from Persian and Turkish, to Middle Eastern, South Asian, and East Asian cuisines. Uyghur food, as a result of an ancient civilization that has absorbed and integrated a great number of styles and traditions over several millennia, is a perfect mélange of the foods you will find on your Silk Road journey from Istanbul to Sichuan: well spiced, uniquely seasoned and skewered, with meat, rice, and noodles as staple complements. If you like Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Persian, Turkish, or Russian/Georgian flavors, then you will undoubtedly find this place a real winner on all counts.Dolans perfectly captures the artisanal, handmade noodle tradition, combining it with hearty, halal options, from chicken to lamb. There are also plenty of salad and soup choices for those wanting to preserve a KETO-friendly, low-carb, and/or vegetarian/vegan diet. I could come here almost every day and not get bored with the options. My favorite dishes are the boiled lamb leg (a super healthy protein-rich option!), garlic cucumber, and fried eggs & tomato. Overall, a guiltless, carb-free meal! They dont try to Americanize the food, which I greatly admire. On the contrary, they painstakingly replicate the tradition of Uyghur cuisine, as if we were being served in the Xinjiang provincial capital of Ürümqi. Some large television screens on the walls showcase the breathtaking scenery of Western China: snowy mountaintops, wispy deserts, and jagged rock formations. Other screens hypnotize the viewer to the ebullient Uyghur music and dance gatherings, offering a glimpse at how weddings and holidays have been celebrated for centuries in the region. The walls are adorned with Uyghur musical instruments, paintings, tapestries, and other artifacts redolent of the geometrically-inspired Islamic art & architecture that spans Andalusía to Delhi. Very cozy and inviting. The staff have always treated me with impeccable friendliness and swift service. The food has thus far been consistent, fresh, and tasty. I have been to Dolans at least 25 times, and will keep going back.Dont forget to try the Uyghur honey cake, which most resembles Medovik, the Russian honey cake. Order it with their herbal tea.If I could give six stars, I would. You will not be disappointed.PS- make sure to read about the plight of the Uyghurs and their need for support on the international stage. This rich, great civilization needs to be preserved and their rights protected. Google Uyghurs!

The Asian Fusion dinner was very good! My only complaint was that after telling the head waiter we didnt want anything spicy, we got all 4 dishes with more spice than we had wanted. Luckily, it wasnt painful, but I would try to get that request translated into Chinese next time before ordering. Despite that, the service was excellent, with a large amount of wait staff, who were always nearby to assist. The restaurant is large, nicely decorated and clean, with cloth table coverings, and large enough tables to comfortably keep the food in the center, to pass around as needed. The portions are generous, and the prices very reasonable. The parking is also plentiful. All 4 of us enjoyed our leisurely dinner, and we will return.
Pepper Lunch

Efficient and tasty pepper beef and rice spot in Alhambra! We recently (Oct 2021) discovered this spot while looking for a quick but tasty dinner place nearby the Alhambra theater complex and were very happy to find this area. Street parking or lot parking (near the Citibank, can enter either from 1st St or Garfield Ave) is available.Oct 2021: Once you enter you are faced with menus at the automatic kiosk which is NOT on during COVID - place your orders at the counter!SERVICE:Weve been here a couple times - first time the person taking our order let us take our time getting acquainted with the menu and the second time the other person seemed impatient with us as we were deciding - but in any case once your order is taken you get a number you can bring to your table to wait, and service thereafter is fast and efficient!FOOD:I am here for the BEEF PEPPER RICE, served in a sizzling stone bowl with a protective paper ring around it reminding you that the bowl is hot (!!) and be careful not to touch! The rice is cupped around a seasoned pat of butter so be sure to mash your rice and butter down to get it all melted and incorporated. Sweet corn is included and the beef slices are arranged around the outside, and its nice to be able to stop the cooking as you wish if you like the slices more rare by putting the slices on top of your rice. The BEEF CURRY RICE was my partners favorite (even more so than the Beef Pepper for him), with Japanese style sweet curry, which pairs really well with the sizzling pot searing flavor. This feels like something that you can really only appreciate in person. The SEASONED FRIES are my favorite style of fry - served in a personal side basket and with a thin crispy exterior with a light and fluffy interior, generously seasoned which is how I like it.The sauces on the side help you with upping the garlic flavor or sweet sauce flavor as you please!Wonderful spot, quick and sizzling and filling, in Alhambra.
Yoshinoya - Alhambra
1701 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91803, United States
This my first foray into this Japanese Fast Food Restaurant. It is located in Alhambra, California which has a large and lovely Asian community I seriously thought this would be much better. I grew up eating all types of cuisine and there is not much I can say about this place that is going to be encouraging. If Subway could make a worse bland sandwich, if McDonalds sold a complex meal that became homogenized in the process of development this is Yoshinoya. I had the Gyudon Beef and Teriyaki Chicken. I am on the 16/8 intermittent fasting diet and can only eat up to 3 pm and so I really eat at lunch time. The rice was a fat zero and the vegetables were not far behind. Unfortunately I had never had Gyudon Beef and even though at the Mongolian BBQ your meat is also thinly sliced it was from a solid part of the cow before it became sliced. My lunch meat was as if it was turned into a larger nugget of meat from every trimmed piece they could find, then sliced. Seriously if I wanted some thinly sliced beef from ARBYs I wouldve gone to Arbys and ordered the Half Pound Roast Beef with extra veggies [I do enjoy Arbys and when ya want Arbys ya get Arbys]. I have been to a few Donburi styled eateries before and thought this would be that level of experience. It was not. It was so not.I thought it would be better. The soy sauce was not very tasty either - low sodium - you put twice as much on your food which doesnt really help but oh well. When youre hungry youre hungry. This place was friendly, clean & tidy and it was busy and the food was hot: I wont do it again though. For balance of the previous statement - I have eaten twinkies and doughnuts more than once. [and will eat at least one churro next week]
WaBa Grill

I eat at A Waba Grill at least twice a week while Im out and about - like with most chains, the food is consistently good... But also, like with most chain restaurants, theres that one thats just consistently better than the others... This one... Is THAT one!Dont know what they do, cause I know theyre all using the same ingredients, if theyre just cooking with love or that passion stuff Gordon Ramsay is always prattling on about... But this Waba is just better, whatever theyre doing, keep it up and share it with the rest, gas is getting expensive I cant always drive to this location :-)This is a long winded way of saying compliments to the chef lol. Hope youre all having a wonderful day

Located in the middle of downtown Alhambra aka. Main Street. Parking was plenty because its the same parking building when you go to Gen BBQ or across Starbucks. So they have remodeled not only the interior, but also all the contents in the menu. There are no longer beef noodle soup or scallion pancakes, but they have much better selections! Its true that they no longer offer traditional Asian menus anymore although they sound so good. But I thin we have to value a restaurant that tries to innovate new approach for Asian fusion.I can really tell from their message across the wall and how they brand themselves is that they are very environmental conscious and want to go towards sustainability.I really respect that because taking care of our environment is very important in any way.Their food are so dang good, and healthy. Its like all healthy menu for Asian fusion restaurant which makes me feeling good about myself. I dont really eat carbs that much but since they offer multigrain rice and gluten free pancake, they make healthy approach so good.High quality food comes with a great price, so yes they are much more expensive than regular Asian or Asian fusion restaurant. But yes they use all natural ingredients from local farmers market, so I dont mind at all, what Im eating is coming from fresh and natural ingredients.I highly recommend getting their blood orange juice. All the juice are freshly squeeze., which is the best.We would love to come back again and try other stuff.
U2 Cafe & BBQ

I have been coming to this place since long time ago, and never had an issue until 10/1/2022. My cousin is in town visiting, so I took him to enjoy some authentic Hong Kong style food. We were seated by a waiter who I am familiar with, and he was friendly and nice as usual.A waitress came over and took our order. We ordered via Cantonese (I am fluent by the way). My cousin ordered an udon, and I ordered chicken steak. The waitress asked me if I want rice or pasta in Cantonese. I asked if I can have French fries. She gave me an attitude and said “I already asked if you want French fries (she said French fries in English).” I was shocked as she was bit rude. She then turned and walked away. The udon was pretty bad. The broth is very watery. It is like udon in hot water, not even with the MSG packet. The chicken steak was good as usual that the chicken skin was very crispy. It was tender and flavorful. Two stars for the chicken steak. After we paid our bill, I asked the same waitress for some tape (in cantonese, I know it is odd) because my cousin needed to tape something in his car. She pointed to the other side “ask them!” I told her that someone directed me to come ask her. The waitress sounded very annoyed “what do you need again (in Cantonese)?” I told her tape in Cantonese. She said, “what?” The nice waiter brought me the tape patiently. The waitress then said “oh, tape (in English).”I wonder if I should start speaking English when I come to this authentic Hong Kong style restaurant next time. I do not mind speaking English if that will make the ordering process easier. The waitress will definitely benefit in some training as she could have ask me to speak to her in English. I also would like to give her benefit of the doubt as she might have a bad day. Hope she will have a better day, when I return next time.

Only been open for less than 4 months and already hitting the off the chart grade point average stars, I just had to give this a place a look-see!Parking may be difficult as it is a very popular restaurant central spot, but be patient you wont regret your decision. The restaurant use to be an old coffee shop, so youll notice a bit of a narrow layout with a bit of coffee shop vibe. Dont take that as small, because it can fit big parties easily. My feeling immediately was how home-y i felt, comfortable and ready to eat!I came with my parents and they are strict vegetarian with not even garlic and onions in their diet. Usually this can be such a headache explaining the stress of how allergic they can be when touched. With such ease and comfort our servers knew immediately and even custom made some off the menu vegetarian dishes just for us.Not only were the presentation amazing, but on first bite into our veggie steak (made from scratch- panko, mushroom and potato) with mash potato on the side clearly gave you the feeling of eating a real steak, but with a plus no poor cows were harmed ! Right off the bat you can tell the freshness of each bite, the consistency was perfect and it almost really gave you a slight feeling of ...ummm are you sure this aint meat dude? I love how they knew we probably dont go to much steak houses, so they brought it to us! Side mushroom dishes and fresh asparagus really set the mood!I also got a generous portion of Pasta with sun dried tomato and seriously, the portion is so big I just had to pack it to go. Plus i still had to make space for some of their infamous Tiramisu!!!Tiramisu were yum..nough said !Over all 5 stars and above for amazing service, great service and did I mention delicious food?!?!?!?!
Chef G on 4th Thai Street Food
5 N 4th St, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
New Thai place that is great so far. Seems like the owners are somehow related to a Thai restaurant up near Sacramento, CA, which is a good sign.Food is pretty good. We spontaneously decided to eat here when we were walking by. We ordered a green curry (rice is an extra order), a Thai milk tea, and a Guay Tire Ruar (the boat noodles they call it).Thai milk tea - Sweet. Too sweet for my tastes. Still good. Pricing is good too so I dont mind that I ordered something way too sweet for my tastes.Green Curry (medium) - Flavour is very good. Unlike most green curries, the flavour is strong and not diluted. You can clearly taste coconut milk and the curry paste. Amazing. A bit disappointed that rice is an additional side order (+$2) though. Wouldve been nice to not need additional order of rice since all the sections (outside of a la carte) comes with some sort of carbs. Serving size is... a bit small if your expectations are normal American sizes (a lot). I think the serving is perfect to feel satisfied, but when you compare it with the average portion size on the area, it is a bit small.Guay Tiew Ruar (the boat) - essentially it is a beef noodle soup. For non-thai folk, the flavour is a kind of like a fusion between taiwanese beef noodle soup and a Vietnamese pho. I really like it. Flavour is really good and strong, and the spice level is reasonable for a western audience. Portion size is the same story as the green curry. I think this applies to all items here.We ordered some salads as takeout the next day and had similiar thoughts. Good price, smaller than average portions (but enough to feel satisfied), and good, strong flavour.Service was really good. The people were friendly and attentive. Way better than what you would expect from the area.Store location is pretty small. Sore only have 7-8 tables of 2-4 people, so dont expect to easily sit a group of 8 here. The store seems to be pretty new, and the first few months is the most turbulent time for a restaurant. Hopefully the good times continue on! :)
Borneo Eatery

In search of delicious hot soup? Youll have Laksa luck here!Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine is a charming, intimate Indonesian/Malaysian/Singaporean & Bornean fusion restaurant, centrally located in the heart of Alhambra. Being a cold & rainy February, my culinary radar instinctively wanted soup. After browsing the nearby eateries on Main, my luck would have me turn onto Garfield and stop in front of this establishment.CASH ONLY!Borneos most popular soup, laksa comes with 3 noodle options-Laksa Bee Hoon Singapore - bihon/vermicelli noodlesLaksa Mee Singapore - housemade noodlesLaksa Kew Tiau Singapore- flat noodlesThe Laksa Mee & Laksa Kew Tiau are priced the same, with Laksa Bee Hoon being slightly cheaper. Knowing that whenever something is housemade, I should go for it, I went with the Laksa Mee Singapore.Laksa Mee Singapore-Shrimp, fish cake, tofu, egg, chicken, bean sprouts, green onion & fried shallot in a spicy coconut milk & shrimp broth. A symphony of exquisite, complex flavor sensations melding together in harmonious union. The decadent broth creamy with unctuous coconut milk, had a moderate amount of heat as is, of which I personalized by adding a dollop or 5 of chili sauce. Ramen lovers would heartily enjoy the LMS. The housemade noodles were perfectly al dente, each noodle having a slight curl. The protein were just in the right amount, so as to not overwhelm everything else. My only complaint being when I licked the bowl down to the last drop & knowing my wonderful lunch was over.I dined here for lunch on 2 occasions. For the second visit, I thought I would go with the Borneo chicken curry, but when I was told it didnt come with noodles (noodles can be purchased on the side), I decided on the LMS once again. I didnt mind having another round at all.Service was good. I sat at the same table near the window both times. Borneo is a tiny hole in the wall, with table seating for about 20-30 people. Parking is via the parking structure immediately behind the restaurant on 1st, or at Alhambra place across the street. Once again, CASH ONLY!Borneo bowled me over with their laksa! The LMS hit the spot each time, the taste lingering hours later when I arrived back home. There are not a lot of choices for Indo/Malay/Singaporean/Bornean food around where I live, so I wont hesitate to say, if I was ever in Alhambra or the neighboring area again, theres a high probability Ill poke my head inside Borneo. Only question is - will I venture into another dish, or go with ol reliable & order Laksa Mee Singapore again?Highly recommend!NOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM
