Aji Japanese Bistro

I love that we stumbled into this place, without reservations, and it was surprisingly good! We were on our way to Red Hawk Casino and wanted to grab dinner on the way because I dont like the food at Red Hawk. Aji Japanese Bistro is near Higway 50 situated in the El Dorado Hills Town Center. It was Saturday night and the place was busy with great weekend vibes. We were lucky that a table had just left and we were seated shortly. The menu is an interesting mix of Japanese fusions and street foods. Since this was our first time, we stick with the basic. We got two rolls: Angry Tuna Maki - spicy tuna, maguro, cucumber, siracha and togarashi and Rainbow Maki - tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, crab mix, hamachi, sake, ebi, and maguro. Hmm....I noticed most of the rolls had tuna in it. They were both good and fresh, but not memorable. The 7 pc sashimi (Chefs choice) was fresh and good size but lacking presentation. It was 7 pieces of fish on a plain white plate. It was odd! We end the dinner with the best dish of the evening - Tonkotsu Ramen! The broth was flavorsome and filled with all the good toppings like tempura shrimp, char siu, perfectly cooked egg, etc. I would come back just for the ramen. Yeah, it was that good! The restaurant had a nice wide bar. Small booth lined one wall. Big outdoor area with patio heaters. This place is much bigger than I expect.Excellent service! It was a busy night and understandably the kitchen is a backed up. Our server checked on us a few times, informed us about the delay and offered her apologies.

The good is good, but twice now we have been given rolls we didn't order. The first time I went back, they argued that it was what we ordered. I didn't have the menu in front of me and just took what we got. Tasted good, so fine.Tonight we ordered 4 rolls. One was the Dragon roll. On the menu it claims to have deep fried shrimp and spicy tuna, and does not state avocado. The roll we received was deep fried shrimp and imitation crab and had avocado. I didn't want to drive back so just ate it. It was fine, just not what I paid for. I specifically chose a roll that did not have crab because I don't love the imitation garbage. It's a cheap filler and that is annoying when you pay $17 for a roll.Overall, we will return. It's not a terrible option for living in the neighborhood, but I will definitely check our orders before leaving in the future so I can be sure we receive what we pay for.

I appologize if i offend this place, but look at the location.. its in heart of el dorado and this place does NOT match the atmosphere not for me, not for my friends that came from overseas. Lets start with water they serve-it was from the sink... How do i know? I went to the bathroom just for that to tast the water and the amount of clorax is so strong it smells when you have your cheap plastic glass next to you and it leaves such a horrible after taste that even a sigarette my friend had after dinner did not kill it. Another thing was go to their bathroom and you will see how the top lid of a toilet was mented together from pieces with glue. Seriously? The toilet cost is around 100 bucks.. and last thing was when we came in an hour befor closing and the waitres said we need to place an order now and it will be last one as they are about to close. So, we did place our orders which took little extra because my friends dont speak english and i had to translate. So, when she came back one of my friends was almost done when she abruptly grabed his menu and said she will get on his order and once agian mentioned it was final order due to them closing. We just looked at each other and i said to them not to pay attention but enjoy our evening.

I would give this place 2.5 if I could. If you dont want to read the full review key points:*not kid friendly*good food*really small portions*overpriced*nice staff*visually appealing and relaxingIts a beautiful place but NOT KID FRIENDLY. My 11 month old dropped her bottle on the floor and some milk spilled on the floor. I would have cleaned it up but there were only white cloth napkins and I did want to use it to clean up. The waiter noticed it and made a face. I took it they werent into messes. The food was great. Flavor was great. Better than average chinese food. The plate was decorated beautifully....however..... The portions were small. I have a family of 4. 2 adults a 5 year old and a 11 month old (the 11 month old typically shares a plate with me and doesnt eat much). At any other place we are able to order 3 or 4 entrees and be over stuffed full. We ordered Lemon Chicken... Mongolian Beef .... And Shrimp Feied Rice. We had to seriously ration our food to make sure we all ate enough. And it cost more than a typical place. So good food ... Pay more ... Get less ....And a final thought.... The waiter was nice but never asked us of we wanted drinks but the water was refreshing. It was orange and lemon infused. So it wasnt too bad.
