Sushi Raku Japanese Restaurant
5190 Kanan Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
Sushi Raku has been my“go-to”sushi restaurant for the last 16 years. I've seen the ownership change hands a few times, but the food and service never suffered.I have been a loyal, “regular” customer, who has truly enjoyed hundreds of meals here, recommending this restaurant to many friends and neighbors over the years.I would say that in the last year or two the food and service had become even better. We were probably eating there or getting takeout once a week. My partner and l loved to sit at the sushi bar, we would engage with the chefs for their recommendations and really make an event out of our meals. We regularly spent $$$$ and always left feeling beyond satisfied. So good, I would spend the next few days obsessing about my meal, and could not wait to go back.Sadly something has changed there. I first noticed this in late August 2023.Our takeout orders were increasingly incorrect, and did not taste as though they were prepared with care. The rice taste strange, and the rolls we loved to order were not being prepared the same, or as described on the menu. The Spider Man roll, for instance, one of the pricier rolls on the menu, but so worth it, was once a favorite with it's delicious tempura soft shell crab on the inside, and a few delectable morsels to garnish the plate. It seems they forgot how to make this roll as the last few times it came with an inedible California roll center, not in the description on the menu. Side note; The California roll preparation needs a complete overhaul, which is serious since this has become the staple ingredient at the center of almost every specialty roll in the menu, and it is not good at all.The last time we went Sushi Raku,, we specified to our very loud waitress, that we wanted it prepared with tempura soft shell crab like in the menu, not California roll filling. She seemed confused so we clarified with her more than once.Unfortunately the roll arrived with an odd tasting cornmeal-like texture of a warm breading around what may have been crab. What is the real deal breaker here is the rice! What is going on with the rice? It looks to be brown rice, it is heavily seasoned at that. Prior to the final Spider Man Roll incidentWe ordered takeout. The order was upwards of $200, and it was inedible! The rice looked brown, and tasted heavily seasoned. The entire meal was disgusting! We peeled the fish off the sushi, while saying we should have just ordered sashimi. Such a waste! I regret not calling the restaurant at that time, but it was late, we were exhausted, and honestly we didn't know where to begin, as this issue had become a pattern. The final time we went there, the night with the loud waitress, we could overhear other tables ask the waitress the same question about the rice. “Is this brown rice?” She assured them it was not, and explained that it was seasoned with rice vinegar. When our order arrived, we experienced the same. The quality of the fish has gone way down, tasting like chemicals, and with a rubbery texture. Also, the wasabi they are using is odd tasting, almost as if prepackaged like at the grocery store, or not real, and sadly tainted every piece we put in our mouths until we realized it wasn't just the fish or the rice, it was also the wasabi that was creating a harsh tasting cluster that no ginger could cleanse. No more “Heaven in Mouth” at Sushi Raku. This is heartbreaking and such a loss! As for my family, this is the end of an error. My daughter ate her first rice at Sushi Raku as a baby, and this became our number one favorite family restaurant. We've spent a lot of money there over the years, but we just have not been able to gear ourselves to go back for one more try. It has been about four months for us.We are now trying the many other local sushi restaurants in the area. None compare to Sushi Raku when this place was in its prime. Such a shame and a tremendous loss to the area.
Sushi & Wasabi
5895 Kanan Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
I wanted to love this local sushi spot, but its probably the worst sushi Ive had in all of Los Angeles...First we ordered the Yellow Tail Carpaccio and Garlic Albacore. On the menu it states that its thinly sliced but we received really thick meaty cuts of fish that were clearly lower grade as I hadnt seen Albacore have little red dots all over before and the flavor was quite fishy, but maybe thats because they were so thickly sliced. Then we ordered two spicy tuna handrolls and it was the strangest thing Ive ever received for a hand roll of tuna. It looked like the sushi chef took a giant ice cream scoop and shoved a whole ton of this pre-mixed low grade spicy tuna into an impossibly wide cone hand roll. If we were to eat this, we would have been chewing mouthful after mouthful of spicy tuna mix with nothing else in it. They were so ridiculously overpacked that just one would have been enough for a person to eat for a meal. Lastly we got the Washington Roll and it was ok, seriously lacking flavor, but was at least edible. We ended up taking a bite of the thick slabs of yellow tail and albacore before tossing them, ate a few of the rolls because they were at least barely passable and in the end, dumped the giant scoops of spicy tuna from the hand rolls into bowls, added some brown rice and some of the edamame we also had ordered and created makeshift poke bowls. Thats how much spicy tuna was packed into these hand rolls. We ordered for the first delivery of the evening at 6pm so maybe we had a sushi chef in training but our sushi was surprisingly bad. I can only imagine this was the case given all the glowing reviews that led us here.
Panda Express
29145 Canwood St, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
I usually look forward to enjoying the steam veggies at Panda Express, but my recent visit left me deeply disappointed. On this occasion, I was informed that I would need to wait for the veggies to be freshly prepared, a request I was initially fine with. My order was simple: half steamed veggies and half steamed rice, with teriyaki chicken and an extra side of steamed veggies.Despite being reminded of the wait by the employee, Emma, and stepping outside for the 4-6 minutes as advised, my return revealed a disheartening sight. My expectation of a wholesome side of veggies was met with a single piece of broccoli. When I inquired about this with Emma, she confirmed it, leaving me no choice but to accept my order, though NOW with an ADDED PORTION of RICE instead of the anticipated veggies I requested.Feeling underserved, I literally went back in line after paying (one person behind me) to PURCHASE an additional side of veggies, only to be told upon payment that I would have to wait once again for more to be cooked. This cycle of waiting and disappointment escalated my frustration, leading me to request a refund—a decision made in the hope of sparing myself further dissatisfaction.Im literally speechless. I shouldve taken a picture.
Mandarin Lotus Fine Chinese Fusion Cuisine
5015 Kanan Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
Family run local Chinese restaurant with varied pan-Asian menu. Warm, friendly service by the owners, who guided us to dishes that suited our tastes. Far superior to typical neighborhood places. The chicken was moist, the vegetables were crisp and fresh, and the white garlic sauce added flavor without being overpowering. Definitely will return.

The Yard Thai Cuisine

I found this place on a work trip and I'm so glad I did. The food is authentic with good portions and amazing taste. The service was great and staff are super friendly. I ordered take out at the counter and it took about ten minutes for my food to be ready. I opted for papaya salad and pad see eew. Both were excellent. I also appreciate the premade to go condiments like the dry chili and chili in fish sauce. The menu is robust so I'll definitely be coming back. If you like authentic Thai food in a relaxing and friendly environment, you must try this place. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Two Doughs Pizza Co.
28860 Roadside Dr, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
Made the drive out to Two Doughs because I'd found them on social media and have been following them for awhile, the pizzas looked fantastic! We ordered a bit of everything, here's my breakdown:1. The meatballs appetizer came with 3 large meatballs that were very good, not great, but loved the sauce they came in. I wish there had been two slices of toasted bread to mop up the sauce with.2. The chopped salad was tasty, loved the Italian vinaigrette that came on it and the salami, and the rainbow carrots were pretty and had lots of flavor. When it first came to our table I thought that we'd received the wrong salad as everything in it wasn't chopped as in chopped salads I've had before.3. The margherita thin crust pizza was good, I loved the char that the crust had and the taste of the crust was fantastic - I'm a crust gal (not crusty, I just love the crust), and this one was crunchy and chewy, not soggy, think but not too thin. The rest of the pizza was good, but the crust was the star.4. We got a slice of the spicy pepperoni Sicilian to try. At $7, it was a pretty big slice that's cut diagonally. This was my favorite. The crust was delicious, lots of crunch to it yet soft, light and chewy on the inside, and the pepperoni is really, really good. The ricotta and spicy honey made this slice's taste my favorite of the day.I found the prices on par with similar places around LA, and let's face it, everything is expensive. We chose to dine in, and it looked like they had a good beer selection and a handful of wine if you choose to sit at one of their tables (there aren't many, and we saw a lot of takeout orders go through the door while we were there). Overall it was worth the drive to try it, and I'd stop back in again if I was in the neighborhood, or before seeing a show at The Canyon Club.
Cuckoo Rooster
5653 Kanan Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
When Cuckoo Rooster first opened, I was so excited. They had the best fried chicken I'd ever had in my life. They didn't have a lot of sides, but the chicken itself was so good that it didn't matter.However- that was three years ago. I suspect the pandemic has been very hard on this poor establishment, as I just ordered chicken for dinner tonight. Not only have their ordering practices changed (they no longer allow dine-in OR walk-ins OR call-in orders; all orders must be completed on the Internet), but their food options are severely limited from what they used to be as well.I like dark meat. I don't mind bones as long as I can have legs and thighs, but they no longer carry legs and thighs, they only carry breast fillets. Okay, I guess I will have a couple breast fillets. They had a few new flavor options, so I ordered lemon pepper and rosemary, one on each fillet. It was disgusting. The chicken seemed not as fresh, and the flavoring seemed to be a powder or oil that was added on after cooking and in both cases there was also sugar in the flavor. I don't want added sugar in my food, that's why I don't go to the franchise fast food places. I couldn't finish it, I had to pull all the breading off the rosemary chicken breast to even eat any of it, and I felt extremely nauseous afterward.I gave two stars instead of one because the staff is still very nice, and I am sure that these are not changes that the restaurant wanted to make but rather that they were forced to make because of supply side issues or other pandemic-related problems. But I am certainly not going to order food or eat food from here ever again, it was just too disgusting. RIP Cuckoo Rooster :(
Green Onion Chinese Cuisine
30651 Thousand Oaks Blvd F, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
This place is great! Green Onion is a breath of fresh air, since most of the Asian offerings in Westlake Village are pretty terrible (Panda Express, what?).I highly recommend the plain wonton soup (but if you like thick, spaghetti-type noodles, then go for the noodle option), as the filling is fresh and flavorful, and the wonton skin is tender and strong enough to hold the filling without splitting. Also delicious is the stir fried beef hor foon noodle dish (I cant remember what Green Onion calls it on their menu), but those of you who speak Cantonese know it as gan chow ngao hor. This place is NOT skimpy when it comes to their ingredients, and youll find your dishes filled with yummy fresh vegetables and tender meat. The service is also wonderful! The waitress is the sweetest lady from Taiwan, and when you are her guest, she makes you feel like you are at home. The prices are also great, and most dishes are no more than $10 each.
Wood Ranch
Whizin Market Square, 5050 Cornell Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
I had the pleasure of dining at Wood Ranch Restaurant, and I must say, it was an exceptional culinary experience that exceeded all my expectations! From the warm and inviting ambiance to the mouthwatering dishes, Wood Ranch truly has it all.Upon entering the restaurant, I was immediately struck by the cozy, rustic atmosphere, complete with wood accents, dim lighting, and a welcoming fireplace. The friendly staff promptly greeted me and led me to my table, where I was excited to dive into the extensive menu.Wood Ranchs menu boasts a fantastic selection of American comfort food, with an emphasis on succulent, wood-fired meats. After much deliberation, I opted for the baby back ribs, which were cooked to perfection and practically falling off the bone. The house-made BBQ sauce was a delightful balance of sweet and tangy flavors, perfectly complementing the tender, smoky meat. My dining companion enjoyed the tri-tip steak, which was juicy, flavorful, and cooked exactly to her liking.Of course, I cannot forget to mention the delectable sides! The garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and full of flavor, while the mac and cheese was rich, gooey, and incredibly satisfying. And lets not forget the warm, freshly baked bread that was brought to our table - it was the perfect way to start our meal. The service at Wood Ranch was top-notch, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who were more than happy to offer recommendations and ensure that our dining experience was nothing short of perfect. The pacing of the meal was spot-on, allowing us to savor each dish without feeling rushed. In conclusion, if youre looking for a delicious and satisfying meal in a warm, inviting atmosphere, look no further than Wood Ranch Restaurant. The combination of mouthwatering dishes, exceptional service, and cozy ambiance make it a dining experience that you wont want to miss. Im already looking forward to my next visit!
Tavern Tomoko & Ladyface Brewery
29281 Agoura Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, United States
There is much confusion about this business - - it has a significant part of the menu insured from Asian cuisine and the rest seems more conventional and this restaurant-brewery seems ambivalent whether it truly wants to keep its Ladyface name or if it wants a more Japanese moniker. Our food tasted really good, portions were a little bit less than comparable. Note to chef: super-tall sandwiches may look spectator when they 1st arrive at the table, but are impractical to dismantle/consume. The Beer/ale roster is Fantastic and it is impressive that this business brews its own. We had excellent service today and we are grateful that Ladyface has a comfortable, shaded patio for outdoor dining.
