Avatars
2656 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
I really enjoyed my quick lunch today at Avatars in Sausalito! I heard about Avatars from Marin Magazines Best of Marin Restaurants where Avatars was featured as the Best Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant in Marin County. While Im not vegan or vegetarian, I really enjoy healthy and thoughtfully prepared food so as I was driving by and saw their signage, I decided to stop in for a quick bite. After reviewing the menu, I quickly discovered this isnt your average Indian restaurant. The dishes are a unique fusion blend of Indian, Mexican, Caribbean and Asian influences.I couldnt really decide what to order, as Im a creature of habit and always order the same thing at Indian cuisine restaurants. I told the kind female server that I usually order Palak/Saag Paneer and she said they could make it. It was the best and most flavorful rendition I have had in the bay area. I frequently order from Lotus and have ordered from Bombay Grill and Amber Kitchen on delivery. I also order from Indian Palace sometimes as its a convenient location on my way home to Tiburon. Avatars version was the best.I ordered it with a medium spice level, accompanied by slightly blackened fresh vegetables and basmati rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and not over-flavorered with too much saffron but just enough to get notes of its vibrant flavor. Ashok explained that in their version of the curry doesnt include dairy or cream and is oil based using bean products. Totally wow, a healthier version of the dish that tastes better!Normally Indian restaurants put curry in an oval shaped dish that makes it appear larger, so when the plate first arrived with the curry and rice on one traditional round plate, I thought it was a smaller preparation, but it wasnt and the portion was perfect.Ashok also just prepared a Daal Curry for a takeout guest and brought a small sample for me to try it the next time I visit. He explained that all dishes are made-to-order and they dont pre-cook large portions to serve like many other Indian restaurants do. The curry was also excellent, but I like spinach curry over cauliflower/lentil curries (re: creature of habit). I ordered the same dish again to-go to enjoy for dinner.I was surprised the restaurant wasnt immediately packed at 11 on a Friday like other restaurants in town with the food and service being so excellent. Go to Avatars -- incredible!

Sandrino Pizza & Vino
45 Caledonia St, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
The freshest, most elegant, handcrafted, and scrumptious pizza you will ever eat. This petite restaurant is operated by two truly dedicated Italian foodies who have brought their skills and love of food and wine to their simple Sausalito venue. Not your typical pizza place! The wines, Italian and domestic are carefully chosen to pair with the beautifully and creatively prepared pizza offerings. The salads are equally elegant and lovely to behold. We enjoyed a special spinach salad with roasted ham, crispy potato rounds and slices of hard boiled egg. Monika, one of the owners told us it was a favorite from her home region in Italy, the Dolomite mountain area of northeastern Italy. It was simply dressed to perfection with the finest olive oil and vinegar. We enjoyed her freshly made focaccia and breadsticks with fragrant olive oil as we waited for our pizza. The venue is mall, and from where I was sitting, I could see the pizza dough being expertly prepared with fine cornmeal that added the perfect crunch to the crust edges. We ordered the Parmigiana pizza with green and black olives added for an extra kick. The pizza choices are many, and all looked divine as we watched them arrive at other tables. We washed it all down with two glasses of her recommended Syrah red blend wine. It was to die for. Oh, yes, dessert! The homemade tiramisu was beyond divine; sweet moist and absolutely perfect with espresso. The service was genuinely warm and friendly too; a great pairing for the delicious fare. Can't wait to go back.

Sausalito Gourmet Delicatessen
209 Caledonia St, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
The gyro was sublime. Warm, slightly chewy bread, tasty, well seasoned lamb, a stunning lemon-garlic sauce and a smattering of vegetables come together to make a gyro that is more than the sum of its parts. The deviled egg appetizer was well seasoned (some might think its too salty, though to me it was perfect) and very tasty. The dolmades are a perfect execution on a Greek classic, and have just the right amount of oil and lemon juice. Their drunk selection is on-point. I grabbed a half-and-half (tea/lemonade) which paired well with the meal. Aside from the food, the back patio is a heavenly garden with bright flowers and a water fountain. As I sat down, a bluejay joined me at the fountain near my table and looked me up and down, but didnt go as far as begging for food from me, as pigeons often do. Ill definitely be coming back.

Saylors Restaurant & Bar
2009 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
Our first experience eating here the other evening was very much a mixed bag. Some things were great and some left a lot to be desired. The chips and salsa were delicious. The drinks we had - the organic margarita and thyme for mezcal - were both excellent. The main dish and sides of beans (black or refried) in each entree was also generally tasty. The queso dip was bland enough to prompt me to wonder if an ingredient was left out. The rice was undercooked and also lacked any flavor.Though the bussing staff was on-point, our server (don't think he gave his name, taller and bald wearing glasses) was incredibly slow. There were long delays throughout dinner, including a 15-20 minute gap after dropping our food off in which I didn't see him again. We'll be back to try again but the first round leaves room for improvement.

Sushi Ran
107 Caledonia St, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
This review is for those of you who are also vegetarians who love to eat at sushi restaurants. I thought this place was decent but not great. The seasonal veggies tempura cooked in rice bran oil was quite good but the one specialty vegetarian roll did not strike my fancy mostly because the seaweed and asparagus were tough and I didn’t love the taste of shiso (an herb in the mint family). My fellow diner said the wagyu-yaki was excellent.

Drivers Market & Deli
200 Caledonia St, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
Ive been in a casual committed dating situation with Drivers for the 5 years I have lived in Sausalito. First few visits I thought it wasnt good enough for me, I kept comparing it to Bi-Rite in SF. We kept trying to make it work and every visit I found more things to love.It turns out Ive been slowly falling in love with this understated gem and now I am in a full blown love affair with this place. From their delicious breakfast Burritos (well constructed, perfectly spicy, and relatively healthy with sautéed greens and a whole wheat tortilla), Bentons bacon, Humboldt cherry cider, interesting and unique boutique Asian spices/ingredients, Bardstown bourbon, raaka chocolate, Della fattoria Meyer lemon bread, firehouse mikes pepperjack cheesr, etc etc this place has got it going on. And the service is terrific-I was able to special order acme bakery slider buns for a party and its always nice to see the same crew.AND I scored the last bottle of Siracha on the planet here. I also noticed they have canned jackfruit- how rare is that??I dont love their produce, its trying hard and they stock the right items but it seems a bit past peak freshness.Next area of exploration will be their wine section.

Ditas
562 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA 94965, United States
Ill start the review by saying that the venue and views are wonderful. The iconic location and view of the city is fabulous.I personally run warm so the temperature in the venue was fine for me; however, it was clear that it was brisk for many as service staff including the host who was seemingly also acting as the de facto food runner was stomping around the restaurant in a floor length trench style coat. The food itself, once served, was tasty; however, at least two of our dishes were served to us cold to the touch. I had to send my Wagyu dish back because everything on the plate was cold to the touch. They reheated the dish which I believe was placed in a broiler because the veggies were charred and the meat was overcooked when brought back. And they forgot one of the items we ordered -- the truffle fries -- which was intended to accompany our entrees.Given we were celebrating Christmas Eve as a newlywed couple along with a great friend, we decided to bring in a special bottle of wine. Our server opened the wine and then we were left to pour it throughout the evening for ourselves. No problem there honestly but if youre charging a corkage fee, there should be service included. Im glad we thought to do so because overheating others, nobody has any clue about the wine, had access to the cellar or could bring anything appropriately to the table. The most awkward part of the meal was when a young, seemingly inexperienced hospitality worker came over to apologize for our slow service and proceed to explain that she was the owner and she was terribly sorry and bare with them. However, wed just been seated (to an empty table with no napkin, cutlery, menus or water) and hadnt received anything except for water glasses and menus were on the way. It clued us in to what was about to happen though. For me, the frustrating part was watching all of these green or junior hospitality staff members try their best to provide a good guest experience with no clear manager or operations team supporting them in the restaurant. In fact, as we were winding down and finishing up our meal, we could all overhear the owner talking about customers and guests who had been in throughout the night, making excuses about service staff and complaining loudly to another table as she seated herself and began loudly explaining all of her various gripes. If thats how you want to run your establishment, that is your prerogative, but in my opinion its unacceptable and unnecessary in earshot of paying guests. Not to mention, maybe you could life a finger and help the staff who are so overwhelmed so your patrons dont have to take dinner napkins to the restrooms (both male and female) to wash their hands because the paper towel dispensers remained empty in both restrooms after repeatedly telling staff. In closing, the location and the food has a lot of potential. But if this place has a chance of survival, I would highly recommend the owner does some looking inward, let go of her ego, and hire someone to properly manager and run operations for the establishment. Furthermore, when youre paying fine dining dollars for a meal, it should be met with the same level of experience as what youre charging.
