We are new in the area and we are from Asia so of course I cannot compare. Food here in general is on the sweet side. I can’t blame them, the food here adapted to the culture which is why locals patronize them, and the result is, the place is always packed. And I mean PACKED, there is a wait, takeout table (where people pick up food) is so full. They won’t let you hangout once you finish your meal because the next round of customers are already waiting. Good for them; more success and blessing for your business.That said. I think we found our go to Chinese resto here in the area. We’ll be back for sure.

Dining here for more than two decades and the dishes are still absolutely delicious. Service is good. At times, the place does get really busy. Love how the owner-Chef greets every customers table to see how their meal is and never turns down photo requests.

Food is made with top quality ingredients and the flavors are rich and distinct from other Chinese restaurants i’ve been to. Was pleasantly happy with my meal today and especially the service; will be back with more friends next time! Highly recommend you eat here :)

There is not much that I can add to the rave reviews more than saying that this place is legit!The food is complimented so well with an attentive staff and you can tell how much care they put in everything.Their chowmein were awesome but the lettuce cups definitely take the cake!I would love to try the other dishes too next time.Bring you appetite!!

My wife and I have been coming here for more than 20 plus years and Ive been a customer since the late 1970s. We love the Chinese chicken salad, pot stickers, eggrolls, crab & cheese puffs, candied pecans with jumbo prawns, Miso glazed Chilean sea bass, live Maine lobster, classic Beijing duck, Chao ma soup noodles or dry, Taiwan style noodles and much, much more!Thank you! One of the finest chinese restaurant in Bay Area. Very authentic with lots of Asian flavour putting into it. Unlike the other restaurants that tune too much to American flavour! Enjoyable mixed meat and shrimp wrapped with lettuce .. this dish can tell the authentic of the food. The spicy and sour hot soup perfect taste but less spiciness that I like to be but I like it too. The fried lobster noodle with spring onions and ginger so far a must to try! Enjoyable and appreciated the attentiveness from the waiters ! Would come back again time try different dishes.

The ambiance and service are good. There seemed to be a second floor that wasn’t open when I went there around 11:30 am on a weekday. The restaurant was busy and the lower floor was quickly filled.Had high expectation of the food based on reviews. However, I was disappointed. It is more like an American-style Chinese restaurant (a chop suey restaurant ) than a modern authentic Chinese cuisine place. The clientele seemed to be mainly non-Asian locals.Our party had a sweet and sour soup, which was more concentrated than even in regular chop suey restaurants. The soup was exceedingly salty and spicy. We had a seafood fried noodle and a vegetable shrimp dishes. We asked the waiter for less oil in the noodle. Both dishes were too salty, however. The salty taste overshadowed the natural flavor of the ingredients. The seafood thus didn’t taste like fresh seafood. Perhaps they were not quality seafood ingredients in the first place. The shrimps were not of high quality, and they were overcooked. They tasted like imitation shrimps if there’s such a thing.Probably not a preferred choice among many better Chinese restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area.

Been living in Northern California for awhile now and it took me this long to visit Chef Chus. The food was great. My (prego) friend and I ordered three dishes for our lunchon rendezvous. The portion was perfect if not smaller to fulfill our ambitious appetite. The service was good. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. Go early if you can as they do get quite busy around 12pm. I order extra chashu pork to go before I settle the bill. Boy, was that ever a clever move! 😉 The chashu is probably one of the best ones I have tasted in Northern Cali. It reminded me of Vancouver HK style chashu! ❤️ The only negative review is that no sighting of Jon M.Chu. Would have been nice to discuss with him film making and great food over lunch. 😅

Great experience at Chef Chu’s for a birthday dinner. We made a reservation for 7 people on a Wednesday evening and they had reserved one of the private rooms to the left for a big party like ours. I am a vegetarian and I had good options to choose from. I liked their vegetarian mapo tofu, kung pao tofu as well as their hot and sour soup. The fried rice was flavorful but not overpowering. The wait staff had personality, which I love and they took great care of us. The noise levels got a bit high when another big party got into the room (there were two large tables).

The food isnt bad as your typical Americanized Chinese restaurant. But mix that with a subpar service that borders on rude, and you get a pretty mediocre experience.We got pickled cucumbers, garlic eggplant, mapo tofu, and general tsos. The mapo tofu was the most disappointing with its lack of flavor. The rest were OK but nothing impressive.

If your going for dinner, try to get in before 6 pm (thats when it tends to get crowded). Food comes out so fast and is well prepared. The pot stickers were a favorite at our table and we had plenty of tasty soup/tofu combos. The entrees are a good portion of food and the flavors are fantastic. Water refills came slowly, but we at least had plenty of tea at the table to go with the meal.

Always a great experience at chef chus!Make sure to order ahead if you want the duck. We shared it between 4 people and ordered multiple other dishes to share. Service is generally pretty fast as well.Parking can be a little tricky but its not too bad.

This is Americanized Chinese cuisine, my favorite dish is to my own surprise their lamb chops, looked like medium-well, very delicious and more importantly reasonably priced, the other dishes tasted ok, but quite expensive for the portion. We have to eat a lot of rice in the end. Thanks.

A classic for a reason — some of the dishes are a bit overpriced, but Chef Chu’s honestly seems like better value these days given inflation everywhere, especially at new restaurants. Literally the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. To add insult to injury, it was extremely expensive for inedible cuisine. Took forever for my food to be ready because they forgot one item and had I not mentioned it, they would’ve given me only part of what I paid for.When a restaurant jips people who pay extra for shrimp dishes and only one to three shrimp are in the dish, that’s a problem. The “fried” rice wasn’t even edible and tasted stale.The moo shoo pancakes didn’t taste the way they should nor did they have the right consistency. Garlic green beans had no flavor.The place is a zoo with the crowds including maskless kids running around.Not their fault but the parking lot is difficult.

It’s American Chinese food: the chicken chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, ginger beef were nothing special, not really fresh, a little too greasy, and I feel like I’ve had this level of quality before at many other American Chinese restaurants even outside California. That’s not a bad thing… but given this place’s reputation as the “best in the area” I am holding it to high standards.

We came here again for dinner and it did not disappoint.Between the three of us we tried:- lover prawns that comes in two style of sauce. Easy to find parking and no wait during weekend. We ordered Mu Shu, kung pao chicken, string beans and litchi sorbet. String beans and kung pao chicken were very good. Didnt enjoy Mu Shu though... tasted like lots of cabbage with soy sauce. Loved loved litchi sorbet. It was just wonderful with amazing melt in the mouth litchi favor.

Crispy Duck and kung Pao chicken were not great. Wontons in peanut sauce were awful. Spring rolls were quite nice. For a western and local chinese this was not good. Fruit flies everywhere that sat on my food and went into my drink which ruined an already v below par experience.

Great place. Beautiful decor, which is unusual for Chinese restaurants. Also, excellent service from front desk to table. I expected to pay a lot more but that wasnt the case.The Hong Kong style crispy chow mein has a nice mix of toppings, including fresh crispy veggies, scallops, and shrimp on a bed of crunchy browned noodles. Only thing that put me off is the gravy, which is more sweet than savoury, maybe tuned for a local palate because most of the other items are pretty authentic.Hot and sour soup delish with nice mix of items (tofu, egg, bamboo shoot) and just a hint of fire; very nice for a sore throat. Deep fried wontons perfectly made, neatly folded, super crunchy with no oil residue. Beef fried noodles just okay - beef soft and tasty but noodles plain.Overall, a very well managed business.

We always enjoy the food at Chef Chus! By far the best pot stickers Ive ever had. Everything is delicious! For the mains we ordered the tangerine beef, tea smoked duck, and mushu shrimp. The tangerine beef you get at most Chinese restaurants are battered and overly sweet. The coating in my opinion covers up inferior quality meat. At Chef Chus theres just delicious, tender beef in a perfectly balanced sauce. The mushu shrimp arrived and was prepared by the waiter. After we began to eat we realized it was chicken, not shrimp. It was yummy so we just kept eating. When I mentioned the error the waiter brought us another full order of mushu shrimp at no charge! We said not to worry about it but he insisted. Thats great service. The tea smoked duck was also very good. It was a nice surprise to be greeted by the man himself at the end of our meal, too!

I first dined in this place right after the broadcasting of Crazy Rich Asians (google it about the relationship b/t the owner and film director) and then did talk-out like three times this year—the best Chinese food I had in the Bay Area during the past year…tasted like someone really took Chinese cuisine seriously—and saved me from having to go to Japanese sushi rolls only because they include rice…yes I am a rice-eater now and then. Overall not a very good place. We were 6 people for dinner.Staff are ok I guess, not very hospitable but not rude or any thing like it. The food was mostly fine with some exceptional untasty dishes. While I took this very nonchalantly - my wife realy didnt like the fact that two (empty) tables from us a (small) cockroach was walking on the wall to the floor, and lost her appetite in the middle of the meal.

Everything here is delicious and all the dishes have their own unique flavor (unlike some other Chinese restaurants where every dish tastes similar). If you are ordering take out then remember to ask about award points.The peiking duck requires pre order so make sure you call 4 hours in advance if youre interested in this dish.The lemon chicken can be on the sweeter side. Our waiter warned us of this while we were ordering so we didnt end up trying it.Lunch time reservations are not as needed but be sure to make reservations for dinner - especially during the weekends.

By far my favorite Chinese restaurant in Bay Area. Great food for good prices, so no surprise this place is always packed. Tonight I was especially lucky to get Pekin duck and the Chef Chu himself in the kitchen. Duck is great but normally you need to preorder (or come with me;) The must TRYs here are Chinese chicken salad and general’s chicken. My personal favorites are also combo fried rice, crab and cheese puffs and triple mushroom. Enjoy!

We saw some travel blogs saying it was a must try in Bay Area. The appetizer (cold combination) and the roasted duck were impressive. We were pretty lucky because usually the duck was reserved only. The servers were very nice. But I regret coming here… I really didn’t know it was American Chinese food. I’m shook. They have beijing duck but this is not beijing duck. American duck??? That is not the way to serve it. The meat were in chunks instead of slices. Skin was really oily and thick. And not to mention the buns. I don’t understand why anyone likes it. It was crowded too. Lunch had small portions but still expensive, sorry but I can’t tell the difference in the food between theirs and a random small Chinese takeout place. I’m sad this is what people think good Chinese food is but that’s not up to me.

Have been wanting to try this place for some time so finally got some take out during this shelter in place epoch. Its OK. Very American Chinese food. The sweet and sour chicken was way too sweet. I discovered this place after I started working next door. The salad is a perfect dish. I love eating and the fact that I get full after half and I dont feel as guilty makes the experience better the nutty taste in the salad and the dressing really goes well a mix of salty with some srisp and the freshness of the salad works well. I highly recommend this place. Their pineapple chicken and their Kung pao chicken are also great dishes. To be honest I have try a few of the dishes and I have not being disappointed. They are all delicious.

Ive had this restaurant saved for a long time but never got around to trying it until recently. Its a great restaurant serving Chinese cuisine. It was pretty busy when we went on a Friday night around 6pm, but they were able to seat us (party of 2) immediately. We tried their bone-free crispy duck and their string beans -- both were delicious. It was more than enough food for two people with leftovers. Friendly service, good food, reasonable prices. I think the food here is delicious. However, Ive eaten here twice and both times there was a rather big error. The first time, I ordered the Beijing duck ahead of time, but they forgot to place the order so it was unavailable when I arrived. They were very apologetic and gave me a crispy half duck for free, so no problem. The second time I ordered take out of two mu shu chicken orders and egg flower soup. The soup was good but I received two chicken lettuce cups instead of the mu shu (very disappointing as my friend and I had been craving the mu shu and didnt realize until we got home (the receipt said mu shu)). My point, and why I took a star off, is just double check everything ahead of time - shouldnt have to, but theres obviously a bit of a problem with organization and taking orders and follow through. (P.S. I think the cocktail recipes could do with some updating... theyre a bit old fashioned/well drink types from the 80s/90s, not up to snuff for drinks these days. Id stick with the wine, etc if ordering drinks. Tea is v good.)

This is a great place for Chinese food in Northern California. We recently discovered this place and have gone there twice in the past 2 weeks. The menu is extensive as there are many options. There are so many dishes that we are looking to try. The Tangerine Beef and the Tangerine chicken were very good. The only complaint that I have is that whenever Ive ordered those dishes, the rice bowl that I order is a bit small. The rice to meat ratio is off. The hot and sour soup is not bad. The Hong Kong style crispy angel hair noodles is good. We are definitely looking to try some other dishes such as the Peking duck, mu shu. I recommend this place.

Normally when you go out to Chinese, you expect quick food, usually just ok tasting. This place was slightly more expensive (just under $20/plate) but it was totally worth it. They handled us as a large group very well, and were very accommodating to our crazy order and requests to share everything so we could all try each others dish.The staff were wonderful. Very attentive and well mannered. The owner came out to walk the floor and greet each customer, which solidified how much he cares about this restaurant. There was also another head waiter(i think maybe his son?) Had lunch with my adult daughter, her choice, Chef Chus. I was about 10 minutes early and it was a packed house. I yold them two people even though my daughter wasnt there yet but I let him know itd be a few minutes. Now here comes my only negative in this experience so I rolled over to the to the bar to get something to drink while I waited for my daughter and they were using the bar for seating and the tables in the bar but there was an open slot not set with tableware. Now there was one customer at the bar with just asked for menu and nobody else in the bar area except me there was what appeared to be a bartender behind the bar yet as I stood there he walked past me a couple of times, looked at me a couple times and never offered me a drink. In fact my table became available and I never did get that drink directly from the bar. So they sat me at a table for two although my daughter had yet to arrive and I thought that was really good because a lot of restaurants wont do that. A busboy immediately stop by and fill the waters there was hot tea that was delicious on the table I informed the busboy that Id like to order a drink and he sent the server over immediately. Great job up from the server and on anticipating that I been sharing my the appetizer vegetarian spring rolls that I had ordered and he cut it and distributed into two even portions onto two has my daughter sat down we ordered a drink for her and asked the way for a few minutes and he gave us a few minutes and returned. Our food amazingly quick and tasted delicious Chef cheese has been around for a while I hadnt been there for a while but it brought back memories of the last time Ive been there. The staff was friendly unintrusive and an anticipatory. Overall were rated a very positive lunch time experience and do recommend.

Great food at a local institution. Chef Chus is celebrating its 48th anniversary this year! Not many restaurants last that long in the Bay area. We arrived here 45 mins before closing on a Saturday night, we were immediately seated. The menu is straight forward and simple. A lot of vegetarian options (which made me very happy!) are available. Service is quick and staff are very friendly. Our server took our order, explained that pot stickers might take some time to arrive since they make & cook it fresh (no complaints for fresh food :)). Food was out within minutes of ordering. Server also mentioned that kitchen closes soon, so the dishes will be out soon, but we should take our time to eat and not be hurried. Came here for a birthday. Good service and great food. I can see why it is a long time local favorite. Peking duck and the fried fish were on point. The staff did a nice job to accommodate us for a birthday celebration. We were able to reserve a portion of the upstairs room.

Normally try to eat here when i am in town on business but this last time, maybe not anymore.The food is great and so is the atmosphere. The service on the other hand, at least for me, has been lacking the last couple of times. Maybe the problem is with getting a table for 1...Just seems like i have had to ask for refills of both my drink and the hot sauce. This time, i was sitting right in front of the door from the kitchen and my waiter had to walk past me no matter who else he served.

Amazing food and service. If you like Americanized Chinese fare, youll love this place. If you like more traditional dishes, you will *absolutely* love this place. Plus, the chef and his family are wonderful people! If you visit here, youll come back again. Just make sure to make a reservation or you will learn from your wait for the next time you visit.

Great food, friendly fast service, easy to order over the phone for pick up. The parking lot is a bit small but they do a great job directing people who are picking up food. Their family meal for two is enough food to feed 2 adults and 2 children. I always add on bbq pork buns and pot stickers. It’s definitely a family favorite.

The Chef Chus Lovers prawns was one of the best shrimp dishes that I have had! The fried rice was very well made too.. Enjoyed the ambience of the place which had a mix of a clean new place with the classic old feel.. Definitely recommend this place for a great meal!!

True Chinese cuisine, family style. Chef Chu has an amazing connection with the community and a rich history in the Los Altos area, if you go at the right times you can catch him coming around to say hello. Plus check out all the people he has taken a photo with! The food was delicious and quick at lunch time. I would make reservations for dinner, because it does get busy. We shared multiple dishes and each were unique in taste and highlighted the meat choice.

Great food and friendly waiters. We are vegetarians and were worried that they ‘re wouldn’ Be any vegetarian options. My favorite item was the potstickers. Slightly on the pricey side but worth every penny. We came with 6 people and 1 soup is enough for 4 people but instead of making us order 2 they gave us 1.5 orders. Overall one of the best Chinese restaurants I’ve ever been to.

Great food. We had 10 people and almost all the dishes we ordered were delicious, including beef and broccoli, spicy eggplant and house special chow mein. Cashew chicken a tad underwhelming. Service was pretty good, especially considering how crowded the restaurant was. And it was a treat that Chef Chu came out to chat and take pics with us. Highly recommend, including for large groups.

Food is consistently good. Very crowded, even for a weeknight. Made reservations so did not have the quoted 40min wait without reservations. Ordered the beef noodle stew, off menu, delicious as usual. Snow White chicken, Rainbow Fish Fillet, Stream beans, and Shredded Pork all good. Dishes came out a little slow this evening, but most likely due to 7pm being a peak busy time. Service was great as usual.

Our servers were fabulous and the food was wonderful. Our large group sat upstairs, and the servers could not have been nicer, or funnier. This is our favorite place for over 49 years; good food, and family makes a wonderful evening. Moo shu pork is awesome.

Absolutely fantastic Chinese restaurant. Chef Chus is always a must when we are in the San Francisco Bay area. The variety of dishes and the food is always excellent. The wait staff is friendly, personable, and ready to assist with suggestions and recommendations.The candied pecans with jumbo prawns was recommended by our waiter and I cant wait to go back and order it again.

This might possibly be the best Chinese restaurant in the area. Dont let the fact that many of the patrons are non-Chinese fool you into believing otherwise. This place is legitimate. The food is delicious. There is a wall of Fame of famous people dining here and some of them include Chef Lawrence Chu himself. It has a small shared parking lot so parking can be difficult when busy.

August 30, Sunday we picked up $98 worth of Chinese food for a family gathering. The food was excellent and very fast service. We had left overs of which we put all of it into one container. When we turned the container of rice upside down there was a giant fly in the rice. I think we paid extra for the fly.

There was a recent price increase, but the to-go menu online has not been updated. E.g., the menu online lists the dinner for two at $22.95, but it is actually around $30. I did an order last night that usually comes out to around $34, but when I picked it up it was $50. I think my typical order was a solid deal at $34, but there are much better options for $50.

Its been a kind of family tradition to eat here on New Years Day. Service is always on point. Our favorites are the Hongkong style crispy angel hair noodles, Peking duck and the whole fried cod with sweet sour sauce. Its a very popular place so call ahead to make reservations. I just wish they would have more options for dessert. All in all solid 4 star place thats good for special occasions.

Oh my lawd. If you love Chinese food, this is the place to go! We tried their fried fish in Szechuan sauce and it was amazing! Even my coworker, who didnt like to eat whole fish, tried it and said it was awesome! Their candied pecans and prawns are so good and is usually the first one to be devoured. The sauces are so unique in each dish! The food is not oily tasting at all and will leave you satisfied and wanting seconds :) Definitely call to make reservations to secure seats. My only gripe about the place is that there is no online reservation so definitely plan ahead -oh and parking is very limited so arrive early!

Was quite impressed with Chef Chus restaurant.I ordered from the luncheon menu - both the quality and the taste of the Rainbow Fish Fillet were excellent. The meal consisted of a fairly large portion of white fish and some vegetables sautéed in a mild, but tasty white wine sauce.The Chef Chus lunch meal comes with rice (brown or steamed) and soup or spring roll. I chose the hot and sour soup and it was excellent; I think it was the best hot and sour soup I have tasted in a long while. But the menu says soup of the day, so I am guessing that sometimes they have other soups.I liked my waiter. All of the waiters are well-dressed and clean. I like that.The decoration is excellent. All tables have white table clothes. Chef Chus is classy but not pretentious.Parking is free in the front and in back of the restaurant.I definitely will be back!
