The star of the show here is the loaded taro cake, which had a variety of seasoning that fit well together. The laksa was also noteworthy considering that not many establishments in the Bay Area can serve the dish properly. The beef rendang tasted regularly, but this was paired well with the coconut rice. Overall, although relatively pricey, I would go back here again.

As a Malaysian, Tracy’s cooking here in Damansara brings me so much joy and nostalgia…If you’ve ever tried making food from home that is oceans away, you’d know how labour intensive it is to just source the right ingredients; not to mention the cooking neededDamansara balances the need to cater to a public that is foreign to Malaysian cuisine, but still keeping the authentic flavours we have come to find in our favourite dishes.For e.g. their Assam Laksa is not shy in the amount of shrimp paste added - which can be pungent to those unfamiliar with the sour, spicy and umami-packed broth, but Tracy toned down some of the heat to make sure the majority get to try it.The menu is also constantly expanding, so I see myself coming back again and again just to eat everything~Cocktails aren’t the best sadly, but their sake selection is surprisingly awesome!But I always go for my childhood Milo & 100Plus anyway

Went for a lunch and it was really nice! Service was pleasant and efficient. I got a bowl of laksa, and after searching for one for years in the Bay, this is by far the best one. Similar to what you would have in south east Asia. Flavours are perfect, lots of toppings (tofu, egg, chicken, shrimps), amazing broth and condiments.I would have preferred slightly less cooked noodles and tofu but overall it’s really worth trying and going.Everything else looked delicious as well, I will go again to try their Kaya toast, lactose-free milk tea and all their noodles!

Got to try a lot of the menu, and most of it was pretty good. My personal dish, the beef rendang, was the best! The satay, curry puffs, and asam laksa were also winners. The house Demansara laksa is not a Singaporean style - so adjust expectations accordingly. The Chendol ice was a little too sweet for my preference, but the flavor was on point.

Not an avid restaurant-goer so I felt it was a little pricey but justified down below. I would come again and bring our Malay friends for the real test ;)Service was very attentive, nice and accommodating.I had the Beef Rendang Rice plate which is very flavorful, juicy and large serving size that I had to take the Beef Rendang carry out. Easily enough beef to serve 2 or with an additional rice bowl, for a big eater. Blue pea coconut rice was perfectly flavored with hints of coconut and toasted nuts were a nice touch. Dish is definitely layered in flavor.Chendol ice was not sweet at all (which is what I prefer) but wished I tasted more pandan in the pandan droplets. A good way to cleanse your palette from the flavorful rendang.

Their Bak Kut Teh was so comforting, loved it. I like how it came with a side of collard greens and yau cha kueh. The bkt dish has to be pre-ordered btw (they send out emails informing when it is available). And they have the sweet soy sauce available to eat with your bkt too! That was a nice touch.I couldnt really eat the beef Rendang dish because it was too spicy for me (my tolerance for hot food is quite low, lol). Sadly the char kuey teow lacked the wok hei-ness, but most if not all Malaysian restaurants in the US do lack this. Hard to properly cook char kuey teow on a wok with blazing fire in these restaurants, not like in Malaysia where they have the proper facilities/outdoor area for it.Their satay was pretty good. It had the satay flavor.Their hot milk tea was surprisingly pleasantly good. I said surprisingly just because they use non-dairy creamer and only lightly sweetened. For me personally, usually non-dairy stuff dont taste as good, and when people say lightly sweetened, Ive experience watered down drinks. But this one, I enjoyed!My guilty treat was their air bandung (pink rose milk). ❤️I wish the dishes werent so pricey though, makes it difficult to be able to come back as often as wed like. But we get it, having a business in SF is tough!

Get The Crabs! Laksa is great and I adore the beef rendeng but the crabs are what bring T and I back.Get 1.5 crabs with all the different sauces if you cant decide. You can designate half a crab for each sauce! My personal favorite is the chili crab but you really cant go wrong. The black pepper crab is a bit sweeter, and the cereal egg one is a little more earthy.Chendol ice was a new item for us and it was fantastic. Super refreshing and a great way to wrap up the meal.

Update : June 2023Order catering for company event .Well packed . Grilled otak otak was interesting, and the laksa was tasty but nothing memorable.Perhaps its comparing the laksa to those Ive had in other Malaysian eateries or to visits to Singapore, but it lacked the richness and flavor bomb I was expecting. Just not very satisfying.

Ive had their laksa a few times and each time it hits the spot. Food is great and consistent and service is really attentive. Ambiance is good, can either be casual or a date spot easily. Take out laksa keeps good on my short walk home.My complaint is that they state on the menu that service is included and tipping is optional.... then put a big tip line on the credit card receipt. I was told verbally, but it would be easy to make a mistake and over tip, and this restaurant is already pricey.

A little high end with a limited menu but the food here was amazing. The sate was the best I have had in the US. The meat was tender and marinated so well.My son loved his beef rendang and while the nasi lemak was different in terms of it sambal and pickled vegetables, this combination was actually really good. I enjoyed it with the vegetables and the fried chicken was truly amazing.The kaya with bread definitely sweetened the deal for us. We enjoyed it here and it was pretty convenient for us taking the train from embarcadero.I asked for a hot drink and the tea they made was wonderful. Its not something in the menu but they made it for us.Excellent service!!Till next time in San Francisco, I will be sure to return to eat here.

I was excited to try Damansara as a fellow Malaysian who misses food from home. But the taste of home on its own is not enough to convince me to go back to the restaurant for a second time.Food tastes authentic, but comes in disappointingly small portions, and is overly priced (with 20% fair wage charge before tax and the expected tips.)These are the food my party of three ordered.Small plate: Satay, Otak-otak, Pork Bak Kwa Sando, Kaya ToastFull size: Laksa, Nasi LemakCocktail: Langkawi, Jalan AlorThe small plates are way smaller in portion than the usual appetizers at a restaurant. They serve one person. You can skip the Pork Sando.Laksa is my personal favorite - The broth is delicious but the rice noodle is overly cooked and they came broken apart in the soup. For a $25 bowl of Laksa, I expected more (and bigger!)You can skip the house cocktails. They feel like an afterthought to the otherwise soulful menu.

Finally a Malaysian restaurant in SF. The laksa and the nasi lemak was great!We also had the satay for starters which was delicious. I do wish that the mains had more variety.I like that you could join the waitlist online, that definitely helped to avoid waiting in queue outside. So totally recommend!

Must try authentic Malaysian food!I’m very impressed with how Damansara’s able to pull off the flavors. I love that she had dishes like otak-otak, bak kua, and kaya toast* that aren’t served at many Malaysian restaurants.*Kaya toast is often served as breakfast in Malaysia and it was interesting to see it served as a dessert but still tasted good and would recommend.

I’ve never had Malaysian food before trying it here. I stumbled in to this place tonight and the food was incredible. The staff are really friendly and provided immaculate service. The restaurant itself is very clean and modern, and the menu is big enough to please everyone without feeling like you’re reading a novel.Highly recommend going here if you have the chance!

A nice little Malaysian restaurant on Church Street in Noe Valley with friendly and helpful staff.The menu indicated that some of the food can be made vegetarian or vegan, so I requested a veganized nasi lemak and it was beautiful, delicious, and satisfying, although pricey.

The food was good but very pricey. Im so tired of all the additional percentages that we have to calculate when reading the menu and looking at the prices. I support paying employees fairly but be upfront about what it costs. Nobody wants to be doing X*(1+0.2+0.18+0.0975) in their head for every menu item. Just list the full number since the fees are mandatory and youre supposed to pay your employees anyways?

While I dont know much about Malaysian food, I definitely enjoyed everything we ordered. The menu is concise but you should have no trouble finding something youll like. We particularly enjoyed the mackerel - I expected filets, but they were instead delicious fish cake steamed in banana leaf.

There arent many Malaysian restaurants in the city. The flavors here are good and ingredient quality is in fact higher than youd generally find back home in Malaysia. Its just hard to square the prices - not an indictment of the restaurant, but rather the steep cost of living and doing business in SF.

I contributed to the Kickstarter for this place because I love a good bowl of laksa and there werent any good places to get one. But now there is! And on this latest trip, I branched out and tried beef rendang and Straits meatballs and otak otak with rosewater milk and a dessert sampler and it was a very fun, very tasty meal. But Ill have to come back again soon because my laksa content is dangerously low.

The service was 5 stars!However, having been to Malaysia, I was expecting to experience more nuances of flavor. I believe theres opportunity to better capture authentic Malaysian flavors.We tried the laksa, satay, nasi lemak, and Gai lan. Overall, the dishes were good but missing umami and salt. Except for the Gai lan (which was very salty), we used this side to compensate for the lack of salt in laksa and nasi lemak.

AMAZING FOOD! We ordered the satay, Babi Keluak, and nasi lemak, and each dish was fantastic. Definitely save room for dessert and order the cassava bingka ubi! The cocktails were refreshing and paired nicely with the food.I do recommend going to their website to join the waiting list before you come or else you’ll be waiting outside for a decent amount of time.Everything was 10/10.

I was sooooo enthusiastic to try this place. Not many malaysian places in the bay area, and was expecting a taste of home. I walked past it before its opening and saw it in the SFChron.The food really did not disappoint. Got laksa, acar, and salted egg chicken. Everything was delicious, worked together, and super authentic. None of the authentic flavor compromised (including the spice level, which I was glad for).The only reason that I cant give 5 stars is that it is really overpriced.$25 for a small bowl of laksa (before a 20% worker fee, tip, and tax), seemed very steep; both my friend and I were taken aback by the bill. Small portions, high costs, and additional fees meant that we each paid ~$40, and were still hungry upon leaving. For that price, I felt that I could easily find other places that provided a similar experience and I would feel satisfied (and have a waiter ask if I needed anything during our meal).I really do want to come back to this restaurant often for that authentic taste of home, but I cant foresee it soon due to the lack of value for money. However, if youre willing to pay a bit more, this is what properly executed Malaysian cuisine should be like.

Tremendous Malaysian/Singapore, best of this kind in Bay Area, filling a long needed gap in the area’s offerings. Its crab season and the crab was fantastic, served 2 ways: black pepper and chili. Tracy’s Laksa is also perfect.

One of the worst dining experiences of my life. First impression: glaringly bright light; freezing Noe Valley wind every time the front door opened; clattering of hard surfaces accompanied by loud rock music to the degree that my companions and I had a lot of trouble hearing each other. (Im an avid rocker, but theres a time & place!) One tiny menu with tiny print for the table. Green tea had been crossed out with pencil. When we asked if they had any tea at all, the answer was chrysanthemum; turned out it was a cold, canned, SWEET soft drink. (This restaurant is across Church Street from a grocery store. A staff member couldnt walk over and buy some tea bags before opening?) On that note, the only primarily vegetable dish on the menu -- some kind of greens -- is served cold. This may be a delight in a tropical country, but some modification needs to be made according to location. Now, I admit knowing nothing about Malaysian fare, and the food may be authentic. But we ordered three dishes; unfortunately, I neglected to look carefully at the prices. The chicken satay was inexlicably grainy and came with about half a tablespoon of a stiff sort-of-peanutty condiment and some chopped red onion, both of which were difficult to apply to the meat. A poor rendition of a simple menu item. (The choices, BTW, are very few.) A whole crab drenched in an unknowable but very splattery red sauce and topped with some dinner rolls was served with DIY cracking tools and thin plastic gloves. (Maybe its just me, but I dislike going to a restaurant only to be put to work.) What a mess! And the crabmeat itself was cool, not even lukewarm, as if the crustacean had been boiled, refrigerated, and then had the hot, oily liquid poured over it. THE PRICE FOR ONE CRAB WAS $100.00!! And thats before the 20% mandatory supplement plus tax. (And tip? No.) After extracting a few morsels of flavorless, cold meat, our gloves had broken through and our hands were covered with the sauce -- and the table wasnt pristine, either. Did the wait staff attempt to clean any of this up in a timely fashion? No; one of our party actually had to bus the dirty plates himself. I asked a server if they had any wipes or wet towels for cleaning our hands. After a few minutes, he came back and said they didnt. Frustrated by then, I requested that he just put some hot water on one of the cloth napkins for me/us. He came back to the table with two DIRTY kitchen towels, which I ended up using to wipe off the table myself. No, they werent short-staffed that night; its just that the servers had neither training, nor experience, nor intuition. After a forgettable $25.00 bowl of chili-flavored noodle soup with a little broth, one or two shrimp, half an egg, and a couple of squares of spongy tofu, our bill came to $214.00 including tax and the weird surcharge but before a tip helpfully suggested at the bottom of the receipt. I declined.

Fantastic Malaysian. Menu guidance: Start with 2-3 of the small plates, get a beer or sake, and dont skip the Otak-Otak. Depending on hunger, follow up with either the Laksa or Nasi Lemak. Save room for one of the sweets. So good!
