Momona‘s new location is beautiful and perfect for dining downtown. The venue is spacious with nice views of outside. The food is always good. This review is about the oxtail soup. I’ve never had it before and It looked fantastic. The taste was different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but it was really good but not excellent. I probably wouldn’t order this dish again but it’s great to try once. Broth was rich. The dinner didn’t fill me up like I expected. All in all, I give the place a 5 star review, but the food was a 4.5. My brother ordered the same dish and agreed it was good but not great. I’ll make sure to try something else next time.

We absolutely love Momona! Their food is elevated and delicious, with unexpected details and we always have the best experience there. Our favorite ramen is the Chico Ramen, with crispy kale and pickled mushrooms that are so tasty. We also love their pork bao bun and their cocktails are on point. Highly recommend!

Pork belly bao is great. Potstickers aren’t traditional because they aren’t deep fried in Japan. Only pan fried or seldomly steamed. I’ll allow it since I assume it’s Americanized, ramen is appropriate portion and broth flavour depth was good. Toppings may not be fully traditional though but I consider this restaurant to be Japanese with a slight fusion influence.Overall, satisfactory by US standards of Japanese ramen. Most likely the best Ramen spot in town tho.

So we started with a $40 dollar bill, after 5 days we were feeding for breakfast and lunch! Croissants, cinnamon rolls, almond roll, ham and cheese...the affogatto, double espresso with a scoop of ice cream, damn at 6 oclock in the morn.

The staff were friendly and it had a cute outdoor seating area. Half of the Bao buns were really good. But the ramen, the entire reason for coming wasnt good. It was overpriced for what you got. And there just wasnt a lot of flavor. Also, I dont know who suggested using metal chopsticks, but noodles slide right off of them. I hope that maybe we just went on an off day because I hate when cute small businesses just arent good. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve been here a couple of times and the food is good, but didn’t find anything that wowed me. The pork shoulder in the rice bowl is seasoned really great, but you don’t get much protein in either the noodle or rice bowls. The lettuce in the bowl is huge and not easy to make bite size with chopsticks. Many of the items on the list are things that the majority of people aren’t familiar with, and could use a bit more explanation in the menu. The base price of things are reasonable for the area, but the add ons are pretty expensive. 50 cents for chili oil or garlic? $2 for an egg?The location and overall ambiance of this place is pretty great. Seating is pretty slim, and they charge you $1.50 for to go orders “to offset the price of paper products”. I was lucky to find a seat, and there’s no table service at lunch. When I went here with my family for dinner it was a 35 minute wait, so we had beer at the Bear since there’s really no place to wait inside Momona. They do take reservations, so I recommend doing that if you are coming here with more than 2 people.

New location, same great food! Definitely get the Bao, its always rock steady. I loved the doors being open, with the lights as dusk fell. The walk up takeout window is perfect for grabbing your meal on the go! Delicious food, fantastic atmosphere, and super friendly staff.

Yes to trying everything here! Momona is my first experience with Bao and Ramen (of course not the college style). Wow! The restaurant interior is warm, unique and inviting. The food was off the charts tasty with a hearty splash of unique that I thoroughly loved. Try it and I bet you’ll be surprised.

Momonas new updated location is the perfect blend of updated and upscale dining while also keeping the charm of the older building they renovated. The atmosphere had a great charm to it that felt more like laid back family style dining. The food and drinks came out quickly, which was a surprise as they where pretty packed for a Wednesday evening. Their new updated dinner and cocktail menu was great to see. I will say they do need to tweak a few things on some of their dishes and cocktail menu for my review to go from 3 to 5 stars. The chicken and waffles was good, but it needs a something like a maple syrup element to tie in the mochi waffle and the chicken. A spicy maple syrup would have been perfect to cut the dryness of the waffle.Also, who makes a chicken and waffle dish and does not have a syrup! The Shrimp and Rice was tasty with a warm and savory coating to it but it needed something like Siracha mayo to coat the rice a little since the fried rice was dry. I also hate when you pay almost $20 for a shrimp meal and you have to de shell the shrimp yourself. It is a messy process. The kimchi and bao where as always amazing and will be my number one item I come back to purchase every time. The reason for the three stars is the cocktails flavor profiles VERY where off. Started with a cocktail that had a orange citrus flavor and oat milk and tapioca pearls. The tapioca where rock hard and we could not enjoy them at all and the oat-milk did nothing to defuse the acidic flavor in drink from the orange they added. The cocktail needed an herbal element to it to cut the acidity. My friend had a drink that was very tropical TeKi drink but it was over powering in its rye whiskey and sugar, making it very had to enjoy. The last drink we got was the Suzie Q, which was very off in its flavor profile as it tasted like straight up soap. Something about the yuzu, sake and green chartreuse did not pare well all and all three in my party thought it was the most unpalatable cocktail of all three. For $12 cocktails, these need to be slightly more refined in order for me to try them again.I will go back again for sure but hope they continue to work on some of these dishes so it goes from good to great!

Use to be amazing. Still delicious. Price still high Now the portion sizes are literally half of what they use to be. Broth doesn’t cover the noodles. Tofu use to come in 4 large grilled pieces. Larger portion of mushrooms and kale as well. Love this place but with the current half portion sizes with the $55 bill for 2 bowls and 2 lightly filled boa buns, disappointing :(

This is our favorite date night spot! My husband and I eat here about once a month & we have an amazing experience each time. Chico Ramen is our go-to. The ramen is rich with flavor, nourishing to the soul.We judge our food by asking ourselves “was this food made with love?” I can assure you Momonas food is most definitely made with love! The food here is good but the prices are insane for the amount of food you get. Dinner for my fiancé and myself was 60 dollars (2 bowls and 3 bao buns + 15% tip). I did the build a bowl with mochiko fried chicken and got 4 incredibly small pieces of chicken. I also ordered two of the Manapua bao bun and added cucumber pickles for 50 cents extra each, only to have them forget the cucumber pickles entirely. The amount of manapua in the bun was incredibly disappointing compared to what their pictures show.I like the food but the prices have gone up on pretty much everything and the quality control only seems to have gotten worse. This combined with forgetting extras that were paid for is a frustrating experience when we order it for pickup and get all the way home to discover items missing.

Just went here and the service was horrible. We were sat up front at first and then moved to the bar when space became available. This was understandable. However we were ignored for the better part of an hour and no one took our order for the longest time. Staff walked back and forth through the bar several times and we did not receive a single apology for the wait or well be right with you when we finally ordered it took another 30ish minutes to get our food. My friend asked for hers to go and the waitress brought her the meal and a separate box for her to bag up. Never offered to make it to go herself even though we didnt have our food when she asked for it to go. Then we realized the box didnt fit the whole meal and it was overflowing when we closed it. I asked for a bag and they brought out a paper bag. We ended up just leaving the whole meal there and never ate any of it because it was too much of a mess to take home. Wasted money. It might have been a bad night but this service was horrible.

Momona has been one of my favorite places in town. But this time I had a terrible experience. I asked to be seated outside, we got our waters and then they forgot about us for maybe like 15 to 20mins. We had to walk inside to give them our order and once we got our food it was all good except the pan fried noodles (way too salty). We had to walk inside again to pay and received no apology for the wait, nor did they ask how our meal was. The meal was not worth the almost $50 we paid.

Had a wonderful dinner - ordered the sake 101 flight, mushroom bao, short rib bao, spicy tofu ramen and double dip ramen. Everything was delicious. There were only two front of the restaurant staff working all the tables and to-go orders but they were HUSTLING and our food came out much faster than we anticipated. Huge kudos to those two women seamlessly managing everything. Looking forward to going back and trying more of the bao, small plates, and bowls.

It was a cold day in February when we dined. Cute name. Trendy looking and clean. We had to go back to the car to get jackets it was so cold in the restaurant. The music was too loud. My chair was uncomfortable because the wood was not cover by padding and the pad midsection was too low. They had other chairs that are better.Bathroom was clean and had supplies. The tables had no condiments we typically add a bit of spice and maybe some soy sauce but that was not an option. They were out of octopus which is why we went was for my daughter to try it for the first time. We got two bowls of build our own namen bowls and they needed more broth when I saw the $2 up charge for additional broth I should have know. The shrimp in the ramen was not peeled and it was difficult to peel. Also the cloth napkins did not leave us with a place to put the shrimp peels I should have asked for an additional plate. Neither ramen was special in taste nor amount. The egg in the ramen was delicious. The drinking water was not filtered and tasted off a bit like tap water -paper straws upon request. Cost was $45 for two ramen bowls. It is downtown so if during the week expect to pay for parking.

My daughters and wife introduced me to this unique restaurant in downtown Chico. The ordering was fun, the food was made with all fresh ingredients. The service was very good. The restaurant was a like warm, but it is mid-summer so I wont fault them too much.

Dont place call in or to go orders here. They leave them out by the door to be grabbed by anyone so you have to wait for them to re-cook the order you put in an hour ago. It happens all the time they say. If so maybe you could put your to go orders somewhere they wont be jacked on a daily basis? Oh and then I had to wait another 40 minutes to get my food. 100 minutes when I had plans and called in early. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

Ordered delivery and purchased the double dip ramen and panko fried shrimp bao. The bao was fantastic and the wasabi slaw was not overpowering if thats a worry. Complimentary in the best way. The double dip ramen was probably the cleanest tasting ramen Ive ever had. Smell the meat and noodles before pouring the insanely flavorful broth. Also, order extra broth. The hot sauce adds the perfect amount of heat. Would have rated this 30 stars but only 5 were available. The price is high but for good reason. You get what you pay for. Will be ordering from Momona again.

The workers were really nice and the ambience of the place was pleasant. I ordered the Spicy Ahi Poke Bowl and the Mochiko Fried Chicken Bao bun. First of all, the poke bowl was just not very flavorful and the veggies were weird (especially the giant pieces of romaine lettuce that were pointless). There just wasnt enough protein (fish) in the bowl and the wakame wasnt what I was expecting. The metal chopsticks also made it impossible to even eat. The bao bun was good at first, the flavor of the chicken and sauce was good. But most of the chicken was actually overcooked and tough, so I couldnt finish it. Id probably go again to try the ramen and maybe another type of bao bun. Well see.

Food and presentation is nice. I got the build your own rice bowl and I was rather disappointed with the lack of flavors. There was no type of sauce and the only options to flavor the bowl were salt and pepper. After eating this bowl it made me want to prepare my own bowl at home to be able to add more taste & authenticity to my food.

I went to the restaurant for my pick up order. I was standing (and waving my hand) for 5 min and no one talked to me. I dont mind waiting, but at least I expected to be noticed. A guy came in after me, and one of the staffs there just handed over his pickup (he might be a regular). It was very unwelcoming.

The staff are always incredible and kind, and the food (which is what you’re probably wondering) is absolutely delicious. Good ramen is hard to come by and I think Momona nails it. My personal favorite is the Spicy Tan Tan Men, it has incredible flavor and is great with tofu or the pork crumbles. The house Kimchi is so good, and if you’re ever sick and just need a good broth to sip on this is my go to spot! Thank you for consistently great service and delicious food. You definitely have a customer for life.

Nothing about this place reminds me of a good time. From wall to wall you can see and feel the gentrification to Asian culture (as a whole). This place feels like a mockery with white only staff repping their basic hipster tattoos and haircuts. Not only was I uncomfortable dining in this joke of a restaurant. I waited WAY too long for some simple ramen... which, by the way, was blander than the dirt off the road outside. I give this a single star and an F for effort. Please, shut down and try again. My family and I came here when they first opened, I was very disappointed in the ramen. It was like dishwater broth, very bland noodles, and just all around sad. We tried again today, seeing as its been years and the reviews have gotten a little more positive. Well..... it was an even worse experience this time, the wait staff was very unorganized and unprofessional, the person who seated us left for the day after taking our order and didnt even inform us, our food was brought out 1 entree every 15 minutes even though we all ordered together on 1 ticket. We only got 3 of the 5 entrees, after waiting another 40 minutes I finally had to go to the front counter and ask why we were still waiting. Well turned out they got the order wrong, and didnt have my wife or sons food on the ticket, the whole reason we went was to treat her to a mothers day dinner. They said well looks like your server is gone for the day whoops we never had a server come to check in or ask if we needed drinks or anything beyond a couple glasses of water which ran out and my son was whining, my wife had to find a server and ask for water and he drops off a metal refill pitcher. Beyond the horrible service, the food was still atrocious, the bathroom is 2 steps from the kitchen, they were blaring rap/edm, and an employees bike was leaned up right next to our table, the servers kept rushing past almost knocking it over. The whole experience was God awful and I will not be recommending this place to anyone, I will actually be doing the opposite and making sure people know to stay away. Only good thing was it reminded me how much I hate downtown chico and to stay away from there.

Ramen is very very bland. Its difficult to identify any specific flavor other than water. Bao is the saving grace at this place but it being a ramen restaurant you would hope they would perfect the item most people are there to eat.Also has distasteful political signs in their front windows. Hungry people want to eat not have politics shoved in their faces.If your a left wing extremist that loves flavorless watery ramen this is the place for you. Otherwise Cocos Ramen is lightyears ahead of this place in terms of flavorful ramen and much better portion to cost ratios.

My wife is vegan and this is nearly the only restaurant in town that we can both enjoy!Edit 09/23/2021- This place became our favorite restaurant in Chico. It was amazing. Then the pandemic came and shut everything down. Momona is open again and we went for lunch today, but now things are different from when it rocked hard. The food tastes different and doesnt have as much character and body as it used to. I didnt finish my ramen or my bao because you could taste the whatever attitude in the food. My wife could tell the difference as well and noted that there are upcharged sauces on the menu that used to automatically come with items, like hoisin for example. New owners? New manager? Food doesnt taste the same, service was meh. Have to find a new fave. Five stars to two.

We sampled 4 different bao dishes, and all were wonderful. My favorite was the bao with shrimp. We also tried their kimchi, which was also very good. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. Were definitely going back. I would like to try some of their noodle dishes next. Enjoy!

Loved the classic Bao, and the double dip. The flavor was delicious in both. The only item I wasnt thrilled about was the Bao with chicken. The cocktails we tried were refreshing as well! One had elderflower and the other was a ginger drink. Our waitress was super chill as well.

The sliders have all been great and the ramen is the best in town. I enjoy the Korean influence and the bold flavors. Most people wont recognize some of the words on the menu, but everything I have sample so far is wonderful.

This is one of my favorite places. Its an interesting experimental place, with Japanese, Chinese, Korean and a bit of Hawaiian.They serve firstly wonderful bao (little sandwiches on dense fluffy chinese buns) of which my personal favorite is their classic Mochiko chicken, but the main event is their noodle bowls, of which they have several excellent house varieties, but allow for a LOT of customization.They shuffle around their appetizers a lot; they tend to be a bit pricey, but theyre usually fun and interesting so its worth looking at. I cant comment on their alcohol as I dont partake, but their soft drinks tend to be very overpriced. The water is self-serve (for the moment) and you kind of have to flag someone down and ask for ice, but other than that its a really pleasant place to eat good and interesting food.

Over priced, bland, no spice, and the way their menu is set up you end up spending a lot more just to get what I would consider normal things to be in a ramen. Do not recommend eating here. I adore Momona. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is nice, staff are great. They even have vegan options for both ramen and bao now, although these are limited. Its too expensive (especially the import veer from Japan) and I do wish the vegan options were a lot more extensive, but these are the only major drawbacks. Its a lovely place on the whole.

3.5Ive been here at least half a dozen times at this point; the first two were before the menu changed to the make your own model, and I got a cold ramen that was the special that summer which I thought was amazing, if kinda small. Since the make your own menu, though, I usually do a rice bowl, and Im never disappointed with the flavors I pick or portions so Im generally fine with what Im getting for my money. The bao can have tasty flavor combos too, and I really like when they put the spices/furikake on, which when ordering they usually ask if I want or not.But, Ive done the make your own ramen now too, and I didnt realize hot sauces were .50 add ins, so the miso broths tame umami blandness was saved only by getting hoisin sauce pork belly and pickled mushroom (I do love the pickled shrooms) and soy sauce that I asked for. There are pho places in town that do better portions with sauces at the table to use to your hearts content for less money. Also, got bao today without furikake (wasnt asked but assumed it was default, but perhaps too many people are frightened by flavor?) And it was fine but not making me want to get it again. With the number of poke places in town now, Im honestly just coming back for the pickled mushrooms.There has also been a time or two during a busy dinner where I felt a little ignored at the bar to close out. Which didnt really bug me at the time but does contribute towards the overall rating.Long story short, the answer to all your flavor problems is probably furikake. Or getting pho somewhere else.

I guess this is the five-star ramen everyone has been raving about. Either that, or they’ve never been to an authentic ramen restaurant.I was entirely excited to eat at this restaurant due to its high reviews and recommendations from fellow classmates. Upon arriving on a Tuesday evening about 7p, we were immediately seated next to the windows.I ordered a Thai tea which tasted more like a Chai tea that included a huge, unstirrable, honey-like consistency at the bottom of it. Not quite sure what it was. It took me five minutes to try to mix the Thai tea together. Drinking the tea was similar to drinking a badly made beverage with creamer and a loogie in it. It tasted flat, with the tiniest, tiniest hit of chai in it.I had then continued to order the tan tan pork ramen. It came out completely flavorless. The only thing I tasted in this broth was chili, water, and overcooked pork. My friend’s order of ramen also tasted cheap and bland. There was no component of saltiness or garlic in the ramen, nor the same authentic aromas like we are used to down in the Bay Area.If you want to go to a better ramen place, I suggest going to the place right next to Wok N’Roll on Nord Avenue.Very limited seating.

I really love their food, and get take-out a couple of times a month for lunch. I took off one star because twice now Ive ordered sushi rice with furikaki, and once I got back to my office Ive discovered they just gave me plain sushi rice. The furikaki makes the meal for me, so I end up feeling like Ive wasted my money. Still a great place, but if you get take out I would recommend checking the meal before you leave the restaurant.

I have eaten here several times both for dining in and to go. Every time I have been in to eat the service is sub par, period. Last night had to top it off though. I called atleast 5 times to place an order to-go and got a busy tone every time so I gave up and decided to just dine in. That was a definite mistake, I had to ask for water 3 times before I got any. When i finally got some water I never got a refill through the entire duration of the meal. My water glass was empty for atleast 35 minutes with no offer to refill. I do understand that these things end up being neglected when a restaurant is busy but there were maybe 3 other tables besides me, unacceptable. The only reason I will be back is for the food because that aspect of Momona is always AWESOME! I really hope that the service improves when I come back because the food is so good it would only make sense that the service atleast matched it. I hate to be one of those lowsy internet reviews especially being someone who works in foodservice but I really only hope to see Momona improve.

My friend and I had lunch today here today and when it was our time to order the waitress had us go to a table to write our order on paper instead of ordering in person with only one person in line behind us. Later when a couple of friends came in during their rush the same lady walk out from behind the front counter and helped them pick their food.
