FISH DISTRICT

This was our first visit, and wed certainly go back. FD serves mostly fish-oriented dishes, although theres an incongruous skirt steak on the menu. You order at the counter, and they deliver to your table. We got the salmon burger and the shrimp & scallop melt, a take on a tuna melt which is also available. They make poke bowls, and theres even a catch of the day plate. Do not recall seeing any sushi, however. The salmon burger was a nice surprise. Instead of a lump of salmon that had been worked over with a fork and fashioned into a patty, their salmon burger features a good sized salmon filet on the bun. They top it generously with a sweet and tangy Asian slaw. Salmon was perfect; not dried out. Slaw was a little soupy but delightful. It made a great meal. My companion enjoyed the shrimp & scallop melt. He said the bread almost overwhelmed it, but it was good overall, and the almost-overwhelming bread was reportedly really good. We skipped the sides, which were à la carte; choices included fries and sweet potato fries and a few other things. They also have some nice salads with ingredients that arent exotic but are better than iceberg lettuce, e.g. kale and baby spinach. The staff were friendly, and the clientele was a mix of families, couples and solo diners. Id love to go back and sample something else. If youre thinking Fish as fast food? Count me out, dont be afraid! The eats were fresh and the place seems solid.

Beyond Thai Cuisine

This used to be my go to Thai restaurant in Aliso Viejo and I used to come often with colleagues from work for lunch and with my family for dinners. I was shocked when yesterday I showed up for lunch and ordered 2 lunch specials from of the lunch menu + 3 kids meals with no drinks and the bill came up to over $80. When I took a deeper look I realised that I was automatically charged 20% gratitude (of course there was room for extra tip). Now - don't get me wrong - I don't mind paying for a good service, however I hate when service fees are being forced on me. When we asked the manager about it, she just said that people should pay for the good service they get in her restaurant and that she arbitrarily decided on 20% charge. When we said it wasn't written in the lunch menu, she said that it was written somewhere in the larger menu that was on in the center of the table and she wasn't willing to do anything about it. I thought of sharing my experience so you don't get surprised like I did. We think that there are other great restaurants around here that we would love support that offer just as good service without forcing their customers to some arbitrary charges.
