We had Halloween dinner here - our first time visiting - and WOW! What a gem! Service was great - everyone was super friendly and attentive (and in costume) throughout our visit. The food. Lord. Talk about FANTASTIC! It’s obviously Westernized, of course, but it’s immediately become our favorite “Chinese food” place. Done and done!My girlfriend and I LOVE the deep-fried spring roll wrapping with plum sauce for dipping that’s served as soon as you sit down - it’s the Chinese restaurant answer to chips and salsa at Mexican spots! BRAVO! Delicious and deep-fried goodness! We shared Chicken Pot Stickers, which were beautifully moist and well-seasoned (dipped them in the plum sauce as well); Honey Glazed Chicken with Orange Zest, which was brilliant - sweet, savory, and ugh - SO good; and Fried Rice with shrimp, which was also great - the shrimp were plump, fresh, nicely cooked and plentiful! For some reason, I can’t post the photo of the Honey Glazed Chicken - weird. We washed it all down with hot oolong tea, and finished it off with the fancy fortune cookies they bring with the check! There was too much food for the two of us; we could have done without the pot stickers - but we just wanted to try everything, so we over-ordered. And we just barely scratched the surface here - so much more we need to come back and try!The ambience is modern, and clean. There is a bar attached to the restaurant, which is interesting and cool. Parking might be challenging as the surface lots attached to the property are super small with only a few spaces. Street parking looks to be somewhat challenging, too. That said, we rolled in at 5pm on a busy Halloween afternoon and had no problem parking in the lot just outside the front doors of the restaurant. This isn’t a cheap meal, by any means. You can get “Chinese food” elsewhere for much less. However, the quality of the experience - staff, those incredible deep-fried dipping wraps/skins, and the perfection of the food are all worth it. We cannot wait to return, as this was deemed our “go-to” Chinese place now!
House of Joy - La Crescenta
3220 Foothill Blvd, La Crescenta-Montrose, CA 91214, United States
This place is very average to say the least. Being the only korean Chinese restaurant in La Crescenta, if you have any Korean Chinese food cravings, youre S.O.L. and only have this place to serve your cravings. Food is very pricey here, and very very average. Whenever I go and eat here and get the bill, I think to myself that Im never going back but I do when my craving kicks.... Hope someone opens another Korean Chinese restaurant soon in LC.
Golden Fortune Express

Tasty orange chicken. Friendly staff. Large portions and reasonably, but oddly priced.Your typical Chinese takeout1, 2, or 3 item combos with chow mein or fried riceThe reason I said this place is oddly priced is because usually the more you buy, the cheaper the upgrades between levels become. However, between the 1 item and 2 item combo, the upgrade is $1 but the upgrade between the 2 item and the 3 item is $2. Not a deal breaker, just strange. They have chili oil and the OG sriracha sauce which was a major plus. For what it is, this place is great! It's hard to find a filling meal under $13 these days. I had a big appetite coming in and had some leftovers to spare after the 3 item combo.

Portobellos Cuisine
2235 Honolulu Ave, Montrose, CA 91020, United States
I feel the majority of restaurants in Montrose and the surrounding communities are mediocre at best and only stay in business as a result of convenience. Sometimes its easier to settle for less instead of driving 10-15 minutes away and having to deal with busier street traffic and crowded parking structures. With that said I would describe Portebellos as mediocre and of course I will explain why. I met my parents for dinner and this was the restaurant they chose, despite growing up in the area and still living locally this was my first time eating here. The ambiance is pleasant and the staff is very friendly, I particularly enjoyed the large windows offering a nice view of Honolulu. My mother ordered first and asked for the filet mignon, surprisingly she was informed they were out of the filet despite being one of the first tables to be seated at 5:00 on a Saturday evening. This was strike one. When it was my turn to order I couldnt decide between two items, both having filet as the main ingredient, so asking our server she recommended whats essentially beef schnitzel. The breading on the filet tasted equivalent to the breading on fast food chicken strips and the filet inside was over cooked and tasteless. This was strike two. Trying to make the best of the situation I asked our server if they had a sauce similar to A1 (thinking they wouldnt have A1), to my surprise I was told they have A1 and she would bring it right away. Almost immediately a different server is at my side apologizing because they are out of A1. This was strike three. My father thinking I was exaggerating about the lackluster taste of my meal decided to try a bite, it was then he realized I wasnt exaggerating in the slightest. I also sampled a bite of my brothers lobster ravioli which was nothing to write home about.Having only eaten here the one time and having no prior visits for comparison it is possible my experience was unusual. However I will say that not a single member of my dinner party so much as commented negatively or positively during or after our meal.
Zen Sushi and Gourmet Asian Cuisine
2650 Foothill Blvd #3510, La Crescenta-Montrose, CA 91214, United States
Zen is my favorite Asia fusion restaurant in our area. My husband and I have been going to Zen for a fun lunch for many years, through a change in ownership. Im vegetarian and I love the Crazy Lunch Combo B. I usually order a Veggie roll and Tempura Veggie role. It comes with Miso soup. My husband often orders a Chinese dish with brown rice or Salmon Lunch Box. The food is fresh and we both have always felt good after eating at Zen. ??
Fosters Donuts
2601 Foothill Blvd, La Crescenta-Montrose, CA 91214, United States
Growing up there were two places wed get donuts from. One was here, at Fosters Family Donuts and the other was at a Chinese take out place down the street called Chores. That one was convenient because it was a little closer, but the donuts werent as good. I have since wondered how the owners decided on the name Chores for their little Chinese take-out place. Was the guy who opened it just so surprised and sick at the amount of chores he had to do to run a restaurant that he sarcastically called it Chores because thats all it was to him? Chores was right across the street from a KFC that my dad absolutely hated. Now you have to understand my father was always a very even-tempered and patient man but the one thing that could always get him mildly-frustrated was having to go to that KFC. His main complaint was that every time he tried to order a specialty item like popcorn chicken theyd say Oh were out of that like, every single time. Hed always come out of their just bitter and flustered which was funny because he was still holding a bucket of thighs and drumsticks but hed say something under his breath like knuckleheads! or unbelievable!.Anyway, Fosters Family Donuts. Its located in what I like to call the Saturday Morning Dad Shopping Center cause its right next to an OReilly Auto Parts and if there are two places youre most likely to find your dad on a Saturday morning its in a donut shop or an auto parts store. Or a hardware store. I swear my dad lived for the chance to drag me or my brother to the hardware store on Saturday mornings and then spend at least an hour sorting through those little drawers of screws and bolts.Anyway the donuts here are good.
Motel 6 El Cajon, CA - San Diego
550 Montrose Ct, El Cajon, CA 92020, United States
Hotel is definitely a budget hotel with few amenities. Room was adequate and clean. Plugs were not convenient. Had to pull nightstand away from wall to plug in phone. Room had a small desk with a chair and a flat screen TV. Bathroom had a curved shower rod with a see-through window to let in light. Next to the check in is a room with vending machines, washing machines, the ice machines, and a microwave. Rooms did not have coffee makers or blow dryers. We stayed during a busy holiday weekend because we were not able to get a room anywhere else during our trip home. The hotel was very well lit on the exterior - a plus. Additionally there is a Chinese restaurant next door with a buffet that was quite convenient (walking distance). The front desk staff were friendly enough and efficient.
