Sumo Japanese Restaurant in Ventura

I found this sushi place locally and decided to give it a try since they had some good reviews on Yelp but not so good on Yelp but still wanted to give it a try. I have to agree with the Yelpers that 3 stars is more than enough.They have happy hour everyday from 3-6 PM and 8 PM to close everyday even on the weekendsMy husband and I went on a Monday night during their happy hour. It wasnt as pricy as usual since it was happy hour. We started with the Miso soup which was good. It is not a place that I would want to return because their sushi kept falling apart as we were picking it up. Taste was okay. We only liked one of the rolls out of the 5 we got. They have happy hour but what they also have is happy hour as a takeout.The place was super crowded when we went but service was quick and we left in no timeWe got the rainbow roll, crunch roll, Mountain Roll Sensual Pleasure, and cooked salmon. out of all the rolls, the mountain roll was the favorite.

Atrocious & rude service. Server decided to instruct us on why we rejected their ice tea, because its not sweet, - No, because its terrible. - half of our meal came out 10min before the 2nd half, and it was the simpler of the two orders that was just sitting there while out server decided to not serve us.Food: Solid ingredients, great savory preparations, the sushi was slapdash and poorly formed/cut.Overall, typical of the attitudes prevailing in Ventura for service. Opinion? Avoid.

Wow aside from their awesome HH menu, their lunch menu are excellent deals, so much food we had to get togo boxes. Salad dressing was sooo goood, our server Chris is top notch! We brought in a cake and they kept in the fridge while we ate and gave us serving plates too when we were ready for it!...Update: we are sick as dogs and didnt want to dine in, found out that we can order from Happy Hour menu to go!...Restaurant is small and cant accommodate a lot of people so arrive early for happy hour. Ours was party of 10, got here at 7:30, waited for more than an hour so they could group a few tables together to accommodate our party, by then we were famished - docked 1 star for lack of initiative to seat our party - there was a tent for outdoor seating, but hostess said they dont have enough servers so instead they made us wait 1+ hour, with 4 kids under 6.Once seated and orders place, they arrived pretty quickly. Edamame to the rescue - prevented a lot of hangers and meltdowns. My neighbor recommended the Mexican roll, my husband and I enjoyed it so much that we ordered another. Spicy tuna salad was a huge disappointment - salad was drenched with very salty dressing, I was just too famished to complain, definitely not worth the price even though the server says it was good. My husband loved the California roll and did not care too much about the Philadelphia roll. The sesame was sooo goood and the kids love it as much as the adults.We would come again to try other items but definitely no big groups next time.

I ordered a few things. The sushi was very fresh. They’re very large rolls. Not traditional. Fresh and delicious..The Miso soup was bland, watery.And Sunomono was a molded bowl shape of soggy cucumbers and a little seaweed,topped with three very large, thick slices of octopus.I hadn’t eaten out in a while and it was disappointing.

My daughter just loves coming here shes 9 years old and she loves sumo and I love someone too they have great Rolls great prices and excellent service Marisol G C was great thank you

It was very good and I enjoyed everything I had to eat which included 4 shared rolls and a bento box with pork cutlet which was exceptional. I was disappointed to find no real crab of any kind on the menu. If Im going to have crab in sushi it needs to be real or just avoid those rolls all together, which we did. What we ordered was good.

I got the rainbow roll and the sumo roll.The sushi came in big pieces and was very hearty. The sauce that came for the sumo roll was good. My only issue with the sushi is the rice. The rice was lacking in flavor and too soft.Overall decent food but nothing amazing. Was quite expensive too.

Theyre the best in Ventura County when it comes to rolled sushi and side options. Prices are great as well!!! (reason why Im always back!)

I gave this place another try even though poor food experiences in the past, and my opinion did not change. The sushi here is similar to a super market, and the tempura with veggies and shrimp was mainly the batter and extremely oily. Service is just ok, very loud and the atmosphere is similar to a mall feeling food court. Wont be going back.

They have awesome happy hour every day 3-6pm and 8:00-close. Everything on the HH menu is basically under $10 - even my delicious sake cocktail. Their salmon crunch roll and Laker roll (basically its a jalapeno popper made into a sushi roll- even has raw white fish on top) are up there on my list of favorites. I always order the Sensual Pleasure roll and it was great to see it on the happy hour menu. I eat here probably at least twice a month. Makes me so happy!
