Silver Lake Seafood Restaurant
2291 S El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA 94403, United States
My partner and I initially wanted to eat a sushi place across the street but it was packed. I saw this restaurant on google, it was highly rated, and the food looked good. We walked up and the restaurant was packed with families big and small on a Thursday night—a good sign that the food is goooood. The menu offered the 3 entrees with soup for $30 or 4 entrees with soup for $43. We opted for the 4 entrees since the options were better and we can take leftovers home. The food came out fast, piping hot, and very delicious. Cantonese food is so freaking good. I recommend the rock cod, and beef and broccoli!! I will come here again to try other dishes. It's affordable and delicious, big portions and a lot of people do take out.Update— A few months have passed and I was craving canto food again. Came on a Thursday night. Packed and the place was understaffed with one man doing the role of 3 ppl. So many door dashers were waiting for their orders as well. We opted for the 4 choice for $43 combo again. We got the rock cod filet salt and pepper, clams with black bean sauce, filet beef with black bean sauce, and sticky rice with Chinese sausage. Every single dish was so good! We always like the food here and feel so satisfied with it. We had plenty to take home. They are understaffed, so be patient, be kind. The food is worth it!

Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant (1 Mandarin Style)
173 W 25th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94403, United States
Ive been coming to Fortune Star for 20+ years! The menus changed slightly over time, but its still owned by the kindest, most down to earth family Ive had the pleasure of knowing my entire life! They serve delicious, authentic, Chinese food! Their Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings are out of this world. Their hot & sour soup always warms the soul! But my go-to is the Veg Chow Fun & Chicken with String Beans. If youre looking for your new favorite Chinese food restaurant, look no further!!!

Overall very satisfied with quality/price of food. Friendly service too :)Update July 2018:Maybe I caught the server on a bad day, but the service was quite appalling. We walked in for lunch on a weekend. We were seated promptly to a table without utensils; but soon after, the waiter brought utensils and the menu along. So far, so good....We waited a while for the waiter to come by, but they never did. I tried to get waiters attention by raising my hand and all that but they still didnt come - presumably busy with other tasks? But then I saw them chatting it up with one of the tables - wth? We were waiting for a good 15 minutes at this point, but they didnt seem to care that we were waiting to get *any* service.I lost my appetite/interest in dining here, so we just picked up our bags and left. Its really unfortunate since I remembered I enjoyed their food in the past, but I dont think Ill be coming by again.

Oceanic Restaurant
2507 S El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA 94403, United States
One of the best take-out spots this side of The Peninsula! When I came here I ordered the chicken chow mien and orange chicken. Each entree was about $11 but it was worth it. I ordered to go and both entrees came in a circular black plate with a plastic lid. Some may consider reusing the plate after washing it as it is fit to serve a variety of other uses, a nice bonus in my opinion. The orange chicken was tangy with a hint of orange from the slices it was cooked with (which is something that other places lack). The chicken was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. It resulted in a wholesome part of the meal. The orange chicken was cooked with tiny strips of onion that further emphasized it's great flavor. The chicken chow mien was also pretty good, as it proved to be a hearty entree with plenty of vegetables. The flavor was enjoyably salty and it kept making me want more. The soy sauce and fortune cookies come within a tiny bag that includes a copy of the menu and some chopsticks. I also got some complementary egg-rolls and dipping sauce with my order. It was much appreciated!I will definitely come back here when I have the chance. Keep up the good work!

Toa Yuen Restaurant
3170 Campus Dr, San Mateo, CA 94403, United States
I had lunch at the Toa Yuen restaurant at San Mateo. I ordered the plate with three options. I selected the orange chicken, fried rice and the green vegetables. The restaurant was clean, the staff is polite, and there are plenty of parking available. The food was just so so, the Choctaw's not bad, but the rice and vegetables were bland. For a fast lunch was not bad, but could be better.

Shiki Japanese Restaurant

Great little place. Been here twice. The chefs greet you as you are walking in. I didnt notice it because of a loud diesel passing by out of place but the chefs greet everyone as the come in, even the obvious deliveryman that was lost. I should know by now, this is just a standard in japanese culture and i should keep this knowledge with me when walking into Japanese establishments. The environment is nice. Feels a little cluttered but i definitely dont sense it when having a seat. I love looking at the booth side. I believe it is called Izakaya decor. It is a cozy feel, especially in booth. The Bathroom is western style, modern, and clean. The hostess is very sweet and endeering, always smiling. I ordered a sushi lunch combo and very well worth the price. Along with miso and salad you get to choose two fish items, which i went with salmon nigiri and spicy tuna roll. The rice portion was standard, the salmon was doubled and doubled again. Ill attach a photo but you know how other sushi places charge six bucks for two pieces? This place basically gives you 8 pieces of fish as it basically covers the rice entirely. Again, the rice was a normal portion. The spicy tuna looks like it was handled a little too heavily but the taste was there. Is this something I can always expect? Probably not, just extra salmon maybe paired with an aggressive sushi chef for the day, but I am coming back for sure!

Little Hunan Restaurant
120 De Anza Blvd, San Mateo, CA 94402, United States
Fast, fair prices, classic, simple Chinese food. The use of corn starch was a little heavy but not out of line. the lunch specials are a single entree and rice so we got a side dish of steamed vegetables. The salt and pepper pork was battered and this is not how I'm used to it but it tasted great. I'm not sure this dish would be as good as take out but as dine in and hot and crispy I really liked it. $30 for two for lunch.

Aji Ichi Japanese Restaurant

Placed a scheduled delivery time 6:30pm - 7:00pm through Uber Eats at 4:30pm on a Wednesday. It's 8pm now and my order was cancelled by the restaurant. Even previous orders if I call in for pick up it's more of a 25 minute wait but when I went to pick up I stood at the doorway watching what I thought is the waitress punching orders into the her iPad for about 8 minutes until one of the chefs acknowledged my presence (covid times and I was the only one there). My order was already good to go on the table but when I came home it was a little cold. Back to my most recent order - if you can't do app orders then don't offer it. I don't think this was Uber Eats fault as only restaurants can cancel an order and I tracked the driver who was in front of that restaurant for an hour (he was the second driver as the first one picking up my order wisely decided to not do it). However something definitely got missed as this was a SCHEDULED order. I feel like this place selective chooses which orders they want to prioritize as I was told by the same waitress 3 years ago to call in orders as apps take a cut. Fine, I would have gladly called in my order but I received an Uber Eats gift card for the holidays and I will use it. It sucks as I really liked this place, it's close me and I want to support small business and but I will not be ordering from them again.

This is the best restaurant!!! 5 stars for food, service, and drink. They are so kind, we havent finished the drinks after the close time, the waiter told us to take the time. You can really enjoy the time here by chatting and drinking with your friends. I lived in the US for 7 years, and this is the only place that makes me feel the same Asian drinking culture.

Bonchon San Mateo
220 S B St, San Mateo, CA 94401, United States
Since the owner was kind enough to respond to the review, I ought to write something, so I am.Ive got vague memories of going to other Bonchon locations near prior jobs, and to be honest, I cannot remember anything good or bad about them. I say this as a contrast to this location.Every visit I have made has found the San Mateo Bonchon to be very clean and orderly, the staff friendly and responsive, and the food to be delicious and very fresh.Whether during busy times or quieter hours of the day, Ive never found myself needing to request refills of water, and at least once (if not more) during the meal, someone stops by to check in. Normally, thats what you see at fancier sit-down places, so having that here just feels extra luxurious. As stated above, the food has always been extremely fresh. Yes, that means youve gotta wait a second to get your food, but Id argue that its not just worth it, but infinitely preferable to having it be instant but having sat under a warming light for who-knows-how-long.All this to say that if you are walking about in downtown San Mate, and get a whiff of fried chicken, there are other options, but this is the best of them, in my humble opinion.
