Kazoo Japanese Sushi Boat Restaurant
250 Jackson St, San Jose, CA 95112, United States
Wonderful sushi boat, large portions in Ben to box and very pleasant atmosphere. One of our favorite Japanese restaurants with several branches. Located in picturesque Japantown San Jose.
Sushi Kan Japanese Cuisine
1305 N First St, San Jose, CA 95112, United States
Outstanding sushi rolls. Always very fresh, and carefully prepared. We always stop in when we are in San Jose. May be family owned - has that feel about it. Bar area with sushi prep, and open, casual dining area. A thoughtful, sushi for dummies menu - much appreciated.Soft american background music playing. Come here for the food. A wonderful option!(As an aside, sits adjacent to a larger, more formal, traditional japanese restaurant, also with a sushi area and bar. Sushi Kan, by comparison more casual with wonderful food. Were so very good with that:)
Tomi Sushi Restaurant
4336 Moorpark Ave, San Jose, CA 95129, United States
Have been coming here for many years. Tomi is the more authentic Japanese restaurant in bay area. I really like their lunch offerings. Tonights dinner is just average. Fried flounder was over done. Ablone Sushi rice is too thick. California roll and Hamachi Kama was good though
Miyakko Japanese Cuisine
664 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA 95123, United States
My new go-to Japanese restaurant in the South Bay! From what I could tell, the chef seemed to be Japanese and the food was more or less authentic. I enjoyed my set lunch with sashimi and tempura. The sashimi was some of the best Ive had in the Bay Area outside of SF (perhaps SF has comparable places). The tempura was also good, but fairly typical American vegetables (I will always find broccoli tempura weird). The restaurant was relatively quiet for lunch, and I found the service to be good for the most part. Near the end, we were waiting quite a bit for someone to pick up our check. For the food you get, it was a bit on the pricier side, but not sure if thats also some combination of Japanese food being trendy, local market pricing, and inflation.
Gaku Restaurant
5152 Moorpark Ave #40, San Jose, CA 95129, United States
Gaku is one of those hole in the wall Japanese restaurants that you frequent because you can’t get traditional Japanese dishes like takowasa, ika sugatayaki, yakitori, or ankimo anywhere else.Extremely late post with pictures of food that I’ve eaten at Gaku over the seasons.Highly recommend if you want traditional Japanese food with the atmosphere.
Dan Izakaya Restaurant
1306 Saratoga Ave, San Jose, CA 95129, United States
Dan is my default Japanese Restaurant in San Jose. The sashimi salad has tons of fish and is large enough to be a meal in itself. The clam ramen is flavorful with actual real clams in it. The agedashi tofu is perfect here - nice crisp on the skin, but silky tofu inside. The servers are really nice and are always ready to refill your water. Dan is always busy, but it is not difficult to get a reservation.
Minato Japanese Restaurant
617 N 6th St, San Jose, CA 95112, United States
We absolutely LOVED Minato! It is a family-owned restaurant which is authentic, cozy, and delicious. You know when it’s a great restaurant when you see other Japanese people eating there too. We ordered the lunch bento and they were kind enough to change it so we could get the combination we wanted, which was katsu, gyoza, and tempura. The sushi was authentic, fresh, and well –made. The service was professional, friendly, and helpful as even the manager came by a few times to check on us. Our server was very forthcoming in making sure we knew we needed to pay the meter for parking. The location is right in the heart of Japan town surrounded by numerous Japanese stores including one of our favorites-Nijiya Market. We heard that the Japan Town in San Jose was bigger and better than in San Francisco and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed crepes for dessert at Banana Crepe, which was just down the street from Minato. We are definitely coming back here next time we are in San Jose!
Gombei
193 Jackson St, San Jose, CA 95112, United States
Goodbye Gombei! Our family had always enjoyed coming to this restaurant in the past many years for good Japanese food.We came for lunch and this time we were surprised at how the older Japanese lady treated us.First, I was told to keep my arm to myself because there were another six guests coming and joining with us at the same table at the back of the restaurant. I was shocked but tried hard not to say anything. Then when she came to take the order, she told us she would take the order starting from one person and going counter clockwise and not any other way. For a moment I thought we were in North Korea. This is surreal.Third, the udon noodle was overcooked. Noodle was stuck together and the broth tasted like powder mixed with hot water. There are plenty of restaurant in the same area these days. Gombei used to be one of the best food around. The servers are all Hispanic. They are nice most of the time. Some Japanese ladies could get cranky when it gets busy. We just came back from a 2 week Japan trip and were quite shocked at the attitude of Japanese servers at this Gombei San Jose versus the ones anywhere in Japan. What happens to guest hospitality or human respect one to another?

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka
Inside Mitsuwa Marketplace, 675 Saratoga Ave #103, San Jose, CA 95129, United States
Great ramen place. This place is inside a complex with Japanese grocery store, book store, desert places and few other eateries. The ramen was tasty but the seating area was limited, given the long queue at the restaurant. We really enjoyed the spicy miso ramen. Very flavorful and tasty. We had to wait around 35 minutes to get the food served. Unfortunately, it serves no vegetarian options.
