Pick Up Stix Fresh Asian Flavors
8855 Apollo Way, Downey, CA 90242, United States
**Pick Up Stix Downey Review:**Located conveniently in Downey, Pick Up Stix offers a diverse menu of Asian cuisine, but my recent experience left something to be desired. The restaurant itself has a cozy atmosphere perfect for casual dining or takeout. While the service was prompt and courteous, the dish I ordered, beef broccoli, unfortunately fell short of expectations. The beef was tender and the broccoli crisp, but the overwhelming presence of ginger in the dish overshadowed the flavors. This detracted from what could have been a well-balanced meal.On the positive side, the portion sizes were generous, ensuring good value for money. The restaurants cleanliness and adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols were commendable, contributing to a pleasant dining environment.Overall, Pick Up Stix in Downey offers a decent dining option with friendly service and a comfortable setting. However, for those sensitive to strong ginger flavors, it might be advisable to inquire about adjustments to the dish before ordering.

Hong Kong Chef

I was wandering the streets as my stomach was telling me to get some grub, so I see this Hong Kong place and my face lit up. I go and it feels authentic. I feel the atmosphere, so I sit down and almost right away I was served hot green tea and a small cup. I serve me a cup and it was great. Typical green tea, pipping hot. This is where it starts to go a little souf. I ask for an ice water and was given room temp tap water with no ice. Okay, Ill drink it its fine. Then these two women walk in almost immediately asking to be seated as they were on their lunch break. The server had to tell a customer to forfeit his table as he was leaving, they apologized but there were other empty tables, why did the customer who was already on his way out, was rushed out. Anyways, the part that got me is that these two new customers get immediately serviced and even got their food before I got my appetizer!! (I ordered before they got seated). My meal was the lunch special (served 12-3pm for $9.50 tax included) which came with tea, biscuits (fortune cookie at the end), soup, rice and your choice of meat. The soup was the best part. It was piping hot flour soup, first time trying it and will ask for it in the future. It was flavorful with tofu and egg with a nice warm homeish flavor. I was EXCITED for the meat and rice. I was horribly let down. I got the beef and broccoli side with the rice. The rice portion was really good, actually some might say too much, but there was absolutely no flavor to the rice. I know white rice is supposed to be somewhat flavorless, but Im talking about it felt like I was chewing on nothingflavor and swallowing a mass. Their hot sauce was FANTASTIC, added amazing spices and flavors without being too hot so you could put a good portion to have the added texture of the seeds and the vinegar boost. I had to add quite a lot for the rice to be saved. Here we go with the meat. I was disappointed here aswell. The broccoli was cooked to perfection, however. Crispy enough but cooked enough so it melts with the teriyaki sauce, which by the way was also pretty good but it was somewhat runny and lacked a distinct flavor profile. I added the excess sauce on the rice so there was more flavor. And the meat, I can say it was cooked to perfection as well. A little bite but melts in your mouf. I had to constantly do a base of rice, one broccoli, one piece of meat, and a scoop of the chili sauce for it to be a decent spoonful. Overall, this is a good meal to get filled up with but it severely lacks flavor. The soup and chili sauce were the saving grace. As a side note, I asked for a second cup of water with ice and got it, it was good. I asked for a third cup and she glanced at me. (The cups were like three gulps worth, small cups) She then opened the tap where they were cooking and washing their dishes and filled the cup. I didnt drink that cup of water. I would like to give this place a second chance but Im not sure if itll be worth another $10 to be disappointed by the entree. This was a rough one, but I dont regret it. The stage was set, and authentic but the cook just wasnt adding the right flavors, albeit they did phenomenal on the cooking.
Vallarta Supermarkets
7900 Imperial Hwy., Downey, CA 90242, United States
The Fruit Hunter is on the prowl!Vallarta Supermarket is a grocery specializing in Latin cuisine. Great deals, especially on produce, can be had during their Wednesday specials.A little further out than Id care to commute, what led me to Vallarta was their advertised special for mamey sapote. To educate the layperson, mamey sapote is originally from South America, and it is quite a delicious fruit. The texture of an avocado, but with the taste of sweet potato/pumpkin pie. Sometimes, I can even detect hints of honey mixed in. I look forward to mamey season every year, as its one of my favorite fruits. I would buy a tree, but its not very cold tolerant & doesnt produce very well in our area. I know someone in San Diego that has a tree which bears fruit, but thats not the norm with mamey. I do, however, grow the very similar & more cold hardy green sapote, which allegedly tastes even better! Only time will tell if I agree with that assessment.Scanning the other produce available, my eyes spied guanabana, squash flower & mamoncillos, to name a few. A lot more varied selection than regular supermarkets.A fully equipped bakery, meat dept. and deli means customers never go hungry. I was wowd by all the chicharron, in pieces and whole slabs. I bought a package, only to arrive home to find some of the chicharron to be stale. Too bad.Service was good. A few sample stations gave out light bites to taste. The cashier was friendly & efficient. Parking is via a private lot.Despite the small hiccup with the chicharron, Vallarta Supermarket satisfied my quest for mamey sapote. $3.99/lb was a good deal, and I relished my first bite of the season. I make it a habit to check out the weekly deals online to see if a trip to Vallarta is in store.Highly recommend!
My Home Chinese Restaurant
8716 Imperial Hwy., Downey, CA 90242, United States
Unsafe, disgusting, disrespectful delivery service. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses are doing their best to provide great customer service, It is so disappointing that the personnel at a restaurant in which we place our trust acts in a disrespectful manner only because the tip did not satisfy the delivery person's demand or because a customer's feedback is not pleasant to the manager's ears. The person that appears in the video or photos (Yelp and Google) is the Restaurant's delivery person, he is not a third party. He took revenge for an unsatisfactory tip by spitting and coughing at the person receiving the food who was with a less than 6 feet distance from him, we were in the safety of our home following all the recommendations indicated by The health department and our Government and suddenly some unprofessional delivery person acts disrespectfully by performing the above-mentioned actions against us, and I say us because he knew there were other people in the house because the main door was open and my kids were playing around and can be heard, he also heard me when I said that the person picking up the food was going to be there soon to receive the food. The delivery was contactless but I forgot completely about it. After Posting my review on Yelp, I came across other negative reviews about the delivery service, a tip is demanded, and attitude was given when the delivery person was not satisfied with the tip. The managing personal at the restaurant is very unprofessional and disrespectful because when I provided my feedback and requested for the delivery employee's name, the lady started to be very defensive up to the point that I was banned from ordering from them, very poor customer service. But the fact that the delivery person did this is very disappointing and shows how much there is a need at My Home Chinese Restaurant for training or new personnel/employees, Now after experiencing this it has me thinking what is it done in the kitchen when the food is prepared? After this incident, I felt the need to report them to the Health department so I did.
Downey Peking
11039 Downey Ave, Downey, CA 90241, United States
I have always wanted to try this place but never had the chance until today. We felt like eating Chinese and noticed the reviews from here were pretty high so I thought I was missing out. Unfortunately I was highly disappointed. We ordered dinner to go. The best item out of the four that we ordered was probably the Chow Mein, but the noodles were over-cooked or soggy, the meat was chewy and had a weird texture. The meat from the broccoli and beef was even worst where in addition it felt jelly-like, smelly, and just not fresh, the broccoli was also over cooked, soggy, and drenched in sauce. The orange chicken had a very different recipe than from other restaurants which is fine; I liked the orange peels and other additional vegetables, but the texture of the chicken was soggy, and the chicken also did not taste fresh. We didn't eat much of it and we felt like we wasted our money. We don't think we'll be going back any time soon.
Noodles and Company
8908 Apollo Way, Downey, CA 90242, United States
Ive been wanting to come for awhile now. So I told my girl, we going to try it today. She ordered the pad Thai. I ordered the spicy Korean beef. Both the bigger bowls..my girl said it was just ok..she got grossed out over the chunks of egg. My spicy Korean beef, was not so spicy, maybe Im just used to something with more heat. My bowl portions were what I would consider small for $12+, it did have some flavor, but just not spicy enough (for me).The pad Thai, I had to finish my girls bowl after the egg situation, (cause I hate waste) was a little bland, even with the added shrimp to it. Together two large bowls and two drinks came out to $30+A little expensive for what it is. I would consider it, fast food noodle establishment..the service was great, the dinning area was clean and presentable, just the food was a little disappointing. Would I come back...maybe...would my girl? She made a face and said she would be open to try the Mac n cheese, but not another bowl.
NORMS Restaurant
7955 Firestone Blvd, Downey, CA 90241, United States
I was so disappointed with my experience at this location. Norms was my go-to place for years. It was always so reliable. I traveled a good distance to visit some friends and this is where they wanted to go to eat. I thought it would be nice to visit once again. We all sat down, looked at the menus, and we were quick to choose what we wanted. Our server was very nice and she promptly took our order. We were enjoying our conversation when our food was ready, and we were just as ready to eat. My plate looked good but once I started cutting my country fried steak I thought I was having to cut through beef jerky. I didnt want to make a big deal out of it because everyone was enjoying their meal. I ate what I could but obviously didnt finish my meal. When we were all done, my friend did notice how much I left on my plate. What I didnt know is that she told our server after I got up to go pay the bill. The server came and did look concerned as I was paying the manager and all he had to say was, well, just remind me the next time you come in. My comment to him was, well, we know how that goes. I dont think Im going to drive over 50 miles, one way, just for this. I hope my friends enjoyed their meals. I forgot to ask them.
Louisiana Fried ChickenChinese food
8843 Rosecrans Ave, Downey, CA 90242, United States
I've had an unbelievable experience here at this Louisiana last night. Me and my girlfriend came here to buy food. We both purchased food using Apple Pay on both our phones. We received our meals at approximately 8:35 -8:40. As soon as we get our food all three workers rush out the door closing the restaurant, right behind us as we walk out. We proceed to drive off and we then realize she's left her phone at the restaurant. We verify this by using Find My. As we keep looking at the location it starts moving going east on Rosecrans while we are going north of Lakewood towards Somerset. We automatically figure that one of the workers took it out the restaurant because we were the last costumers and they were in such a hurry, rushing out even though they're suppose to close a whole 30 mins after. We follow the address and seen that it has came to a complete stop. We follow the direction and see her phone is in the middle of the road on rosecrans completely smashed and broken. We immediately call the police . We come back the next day with police on standby, requesting to view their security footage of the phone that was obviously left behind on the table. Of course they proceeded to act clueless and say they don't know how to “work” or view the camera footage. Not even the so called “owner” himself. We have filed a police report and are taking legal action to sue. This business needs to be shut down immediately!! Especially after seeing all these other horrendous reviews. They are completely negligent and will be held accountable!!
