Hama Sushi
213 Windward Ave, Venice, CA 90291, United States
Quite possibly the worst dining experience ever. I understand that post Covid, things are hectic, but they should not open the outdoor dining if they cannot service customers well. We take our seats outside and start with a couple glasses of wine. The wine took about 30 minutes to come, along with the water. We order our food, an hour passes and we get nothing. Our wine glasses are empty and the server is nowhere to be found. I finally get a hold of a busser and ask him to get us more wine and check on our food. Another 15 minutes passes, and its starting to get cold outside. The busser gets back to cleaning tables and neither our wine or food is anywhere to be found. I chase him down again, and ask him how long it takes to pour 2 glasses of wine? He runs back inside to check on it, and five minutes later, our original server emerges with the wine and no food. She apologizes and simply says that its coming. Now while all this is going on, an extremely inebriated couple are making quite a ruckus. The guy literally takes her pants off in front of everyone and kisses her where the sun doesnt shine. A few moments later, he drops and breaks a beer bottle. The girl is running away from him and hes chasing him down. The manager, Tony, allows them to continue this ruckus for quite some time before eventually kicking them out of the restaurant. Another 30 minutes later, we get our food and dont even bother to order more as we dont want to wait another 2 hours for some sushi to come. We close up and leave as quickly as we could and get some In N Out. I called Tony, the manager, to complain and he says the drunk couple were actually doing E and Coke in the bathroom on top of getting wasted on sake and beer. I tell him that this type of behavior and overall service (taking over 30 minutes to bring out wine) is unacceptable. He apologizes and simply says I look forward to seeing you here again in a somewhat sarcastic tone. Hama Sushi use to be a gem of Venice, but with this new set up and management, it is degenerating into one of the worst dining experiences of all-time. I do not recommend going here under any circumstance until better managers can take over. There are plenty of other great options in West LA.

Id love this Restaurant but just because of that lady today I make promises my self im not gonna coming back there anymore. The restaurant is really scamming all the customers which you guys don't know. I never get scared of paying tips to all the restaurants as long as I love the service. But I decided not to give tips on this restaurant that day. Because when I got receipt, they put the charge for the party service fees which mentioned over 6 people in a table. But I went there with my friend. My total fees were $40. They charged party over 6 person fees into $6. When I asked to the worker (she is super thin and look Thai, super rude for the customer) there, she started answering very rudely and shouted to us by ignoring to other customers. So shameful to them with all those money they take from customers. First, she said it's for those who sit and eat in the restaurant. I said in the receipt they mentioned over 6 persons. She started yelling at me and my friend and said you can take away if you don't want to pay that fees. I am accepted if I have to pay service fees tho. But she answered me like we are eating free so we have to pay if we eat in the restaurant. That's the second time I faced that in that restaurant. I saw one customer lady complained about that and the owner old lady yelled at that customer. They are treating to the customers like they are feeding free and we have to pay extra add on fees if we sit in the restaurant although the food is not with affordable price. Will never recommend to this restaurant with all my experience in LA. That's the worst Thai restaurant.

Sweetfin Venice Beach

Something feels so right about grabbing a bowl of fresh raw fish and vegetables and bringing it to the ocean. Then you realize that the gulls love that idea too and you regret the whole thing.I placed an order through Sweetfins website when I was about 10 blocks away. It was very easy and clear to navigate.ServiceI mean this in the least negative way possible, but it was average. My food was maybe a few minutes late because I think the workers were confused about another order, but who cares? No ones perfect, and if people watched me while I worked theyd find a lot of problems with it. Why did he put THAT in the spreadsheet? How did he spend so much time ranting about someone elses typo? Why is he cutting his nails off-camera during that Zoom call?FoodSo fresh. I built my own bowl. Like with my own hands, a hammer, and nails. Because thats how theyre... made. Anyway! I got a large with salmon and albacore tuna, seaweed salad, edamame, forbidden rice (please dont tell anyone), kale, mango, cucumber, mushrooms, bean sprouts with black garlic sauce and creamy togarashi. Tasted great! Really fresh and made me feel not-like-trash after I ate it. I value that. Portion size was a little small, the toppings were added sparingly - both in amount but also in that you can only pick X amount whereas other places let you choose an unlimited amount. Also not sure if the mango was as ripe as it could have been.PriceIve spent less elsewhere, truthfully. Its not outrageous here, and they do have a good loyalty/discount program if you sign up online, but for the large portion, its maybe a dollar or two more than Id see elsewhere. Still, where it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality.Recommend? Yeah, its fresh and there arent too many other poke shops in the immediate area within walking distance. If youre driving though, you might find something with larger portions or a lower price.

My girlfriend and and were in the area and in the mood for poke so we decided to give sweetfin a shot. The place is small but clean, no seating inside but plenty of tables outside at the ivy station complex. The person taking our order was friendly and very helpful. There is an option to order a fixed combinations or a option to build your own. Building a custom bowl is way more fun so I choose that option. I went with yellow fin tuna, creamy torgarashi, with a kelp noddle base. I also opted to add avocado, crispy garlic, wasabi and a side of chili oil. Cost was about $20 per bowl including the extra toppings. It took them about 10 minutes to complete the bowls, it was a beautiful day so the wait was not an issue. My bowl was damn good. Generous serving with fresh ingredients - the tuna tasted like it was just pulled from the ocean. We will be back to continue to explore their menu. I would highly recommend sweetfin to anyone looking for a healthy meal.

Wanderlust Creamery
609 Lincoln Blvd suite b, Venice, CA 90291, United States
One of the true competitors to Salt & Straw of Oregon fame. The flavor at Wanderlust are daring and bold, and they strive for that international flavor profile almost to a point of reach with pandan-flavored cones. Small/shared parking lot with the barber shop, difficult to locate based on navigation (it's directly across from the Smart & Final parking lot), bike racks on the wall kinda look like nooses. The bar seating has purse hooks like a brewery. The bathroom is hidden behind a panel of wall paper, tricky to find.My first time trying Wanderlust creamery was at the Smorgasburg food truck gathering every Sunday from 10am-4pm. We took a broad approach with their ice cream flight and found all the flavors to be pronounced and distinct.Fast-forward to most recent, we went to their shop and was actually confused on the location only to realize it is on a lot to an old garage. The restaurant was brightly lit and the waft of waffle cones were in the air.I encourage people to indulge in their theme and go on an adventure regarding their flavors. None of them are too sweet unless it has something intrinsically sweet, like caramel. The servings were also generous. The cone felt a slight bit soggy or stale, maybe because people shied away from Pandan (too foreign?).

This place is hands down AMAZING. My wife and I recently discovered this restaurant a few weeks ago. Not only is their food brilliant (their chicken is to die for), but the owners and staff (I believe its a family owned restaurant) go above and beyond when it comes to service. I ordered food tonight for pick up, which was due to be ready somewhere between 15-25 minutes. I arrive around the 20-minute mark and check in to see the progress of the order. The woman who was working the front of house politely, and apologetically informed me it wasnt ready yet, which was completely fine with me. I went and sat down for about 10 minutes until she informed me the order was ready. As she handed me the order, she also handed me a drink. I was very confused, as I didnt order anything to drink, and quickly brought this to her attention. She insisted on my taking it, and continued to graciously thank me for my business. This experience was not too far off from our initial experience with this restaurant. Spectacular service with inspired and tasty food.Honestly, I am still a little dumbfounded at how amazing this restaurant is.If you are hankering for Korean food on the West Side, do not walk but RUN into this restaurant and order everything. Give them all of your money, because this place is an absolute gem.

Mayura Indian Restaurant
10406 Venice Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232, United States
My husband and I decided to try this restaurant because of the great reviews and I had a hankering for Kerala fish curry.First with the good points. It was open on Thanksgiving and almost empty. We were seated immediately and our waiter was very pleasant. The restaurant walls are adorned with pictures of dignitaries. The appetizer, Medhu Vada was served hot with Sambhar and coconut chutney. I am not used to crispy thin Medhu vadas but I liked this version. The masala chai was hot and went well with the Medhu Vada.We had ordered Masala Dosa and Kerala Fish curry with Aapams. We had specifically asked for the masala dosa to be spicy. While waiting for the main course, we were exposed to a barrage of loud phone conversations by the hostess. For about 15 mins she was screaming at the top of her lungs taking phone orders. So low points for ambiance. The dosa came out first. It was almost at room temp with a bland potato filling and served with an equally lukewarm Sambhar. Not sure how we got from nice hot appetizers to a limp, lukewarm and bland masala dosa. The Apaams were also at room temp and had stuck together. The fish curry was made with pink salmon and the curry part literally was like turmeric had been added to water and roasted curry leaves and it had a bitter taste to boot. After a couple of tries ( hoping that I would get used to the taste), I gave up. I asked the waiter for some coconut milk to go with the Aapams. What came to the table was warm coconut milk from a can. I could taste the can! There was no cardamom or jaggery in the milk. I gave up around this time and ate my Aapams with cold left over Sambhar from the Masala dosas. My Aunt is from Kerala and so my tastebuds have experienced authentic food preparations from Kerala both home cooked and in restaurants anround her hometown. Our food definitely was not anywhere in the vicinity of authentic Kerala cuisine. I would have given it four stars if the food was actually served hot. Even if the food does not taste good, it should at-least be served hot. When the hostess came around to ask how we were doing, I pointed to the almost untouched fish curry and responded simply that I did not like it. I reassured her that I would pay for it. She loudly said, “ how is it that you don't like it? Everybody else likes it…”and so on and so forth. I cut her off, stood my ground and calmly informed her that I was not “everybody” and that I did not care for the fish curry. I usually succumb and become overly apologetic in these situations, but this time stood my ground. Perhaps I was expecting something like, “I am sorry that you did not like our popular fish curry. Is there something else that we could get you?”. Instead I was chastised for not liking the subpar curry. So overall 3 stars for a polite waiter, hot appetizers with hot tea and yummy gulab jamun.P.S - I am not expecting any sort of refund or a sermon. I simply needed to give feedback about my first visit to this restaurant with the hopes for improvement in the future.

My Lai Kitchen - Venice
12222 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90066, United States
Casual “build your own bowl” Vietnamese spot. Came here with a friend and we both were very excited to try some fresh eats. I opted for a bowl with crispy tofu, garlic rice, a generous amount of veggies (definitely get the pickled cucumber and the fried onions & garlic), as well as the fish sauce and cilantro ginger sauce. My friend opted for the banh mi with pork, and also an egg roll on the side. My tofu came out fresh and there was enough food that I had leftovers for lunch the next day.Metered street parking is available, and it was easy to find a spot on a weeknight. There is free street parking further down the road by the school, if you're looking to get some steps in. Indoor high top seating is available, though most people seemed to opt for takeout. Credit cards are accepted. The concept is similar to a Chipotle or Cava, and there are vegan options available (not part of the elite perk). The staff were all super friendly and efficient.
