Mingala Restaurant
39055 Cedar Blvd #108, Newark, CA 94560, United States
I found Mingala Restaurant on Yelp when searching for a new Malaysian restaurant in San Jose. Mingala seemed to carry both Burmese and Malaysian food which made me a little hesitant to try it as both these cuisines are very different. However, as it had a solid 4-star rating, I decided to give it a try. I generally get Nasi Lemak at any new Malaysian restaurant that I try. This is a dish that consists of coconut rice, sambal, egg, peanuts, cucumber, onions and a curry which could be either Chicken or Beef, so it gives you a pretty good idea about the overall food at the restaurant. I used the on-line ordering tool on Yelp and got with Nasi Lemak ($10.99) and went with the chick curry (beef curry is $2 more) and landed up there after about 20 minutes.Mingala is in a small strip mall with hardly any parking. I had to hover a while before I got a spot so by the time I got in, it was well over 40 minutes, yet the order was not ready, and I was made to wait another 10 minutes or so before I got my order. This was around 9 pm on a Friday night and the place was about 60% full. I got 2 containers, one with the rice, eggs and salad and another with the chicken curry. The food made up for the long wait. The rice had a rich coconut flavor and even though the portion size of the chicken curry was small it was very tasty. Overall this dish came together very well.As I liked what I got the first time around, I decided to try Mingala again, this time for the Burmese cuisine. Again, as usual I got the Mohinga ($10.99) which is like the national dish of Burma and it consists of a fish-based soup with vermicelli noodles. This time I landed up after 30 minutes to pickup the order, fought for parking and picked it up without any wait. The Mohinga soup was a little runny and lacked the deep fish taste that you expect. The vermicelli noodles looked like they had all clumped up together, but they opened up, when dunked in the soup. Overall this was good not great. I definitely liked the Nasi Lemak more than the Mohinga soup.Price-wise it is pretty cheap with both the dishes being slightly over the $10 mark. Looking at the overall package of cost, quality and service Mingala, definitely gets a thumbs up from me which means I will be back to try more stuff off their menu in due course.
Tramys Restaurant
5729 Jarvis Ave, Newark, CA 94560, United States
The large lotus root salad appetizer was a standout with its freshness and unique flavor profile. The crunchy lotus root was delightful, providing an interesting texture and flavor that set the tone for the meal. Although the generous portion of celery slightly overpowered the subtle lotus taste, it still made for an enjoyable start to our meal. The restaurants attention to customer satisfaction was particularly impressive. Upon expressing my thoughts about the celery to our attentive server, they graciously prepared a take-away version of the lotus root salad, minus the celery. This gesture allowed me to truly appreciate the essence of the lotus root and its unique flavor - a touch I found to be both considerate and responsive. The filet mignon shaking beef was another highlight. While it diverged a bit from traditional preparations due to the inclusion of gravy, this twist only added to its appeal. The tender, flavorful beef paired wonderfully with the tomato rice, offering a comforting and hearty main course that left us fully satisfied.Overall, our visit to Tramys was an unforgettable experience that balanced traditional cuisine with innovative twists. I look forward to my next meal at this delightful restaurant and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a fresh and satisfying culinary experience.Rating: 4/5
Tasty Chinese Restaurant
5576 Newpark Mall Rd, Newark, CA 94560, United States
We visited other Asian restaurants while visiting California. They all came up short, very disappointing. We did one last search & found this restaurant. Read a few reviews, & decided to give this place a try. It was amazing, the best chinese food we had in a long time. Nothing was made in advance & put in warmers. EVERYTHING was made fresh. Im back in my home state now, but my next trip back to CA, I will definitely be stopping by.
Nijo Castle Japanese Restaurant
39888 Balentine Dr, Newark, CA 94560, United States
Went to celebrate my nephews first birthday. Arrived on time for our reservation. We were sat way in the back where they stated that there was no AC in the back of the restaurant. Patiently awaited service. Service was not provided until nearly an hour of us being there. Thats when we received water and lemons and our order was taken. 2 hours in, we waited while we watched customers come and go at other tables. Other customers were being served rapidly while we still had no service. Let alone, a family friend joined the opposite side of our table. They were served and received their rice and meat rapidly, while... guess what... we had only received water and a salad. We still did not have a cook. Additionally, we requested for separate tabs upon ordering, which was acknowledged by our waiter. Upon finally receiving our food after 3 hours, we no longer wanted to remain at the restaurant. They were closed when serving us our food. Furthermore, when the bill came they stated that they could not split the tab as requested. This should have been stated upon request, not acknowledged that it would be done. Our table was ignored, sat in a hot corner, and treated poorly for my nephews first birthday. Horrible service and the staff had no sense of care or concern for our needs. It is as if they assumed that a group of A.A. individuals needed to be placed in the hot back corner and not serviced correctly. Failing to know you were serving the first black nurse in the area, a local district representative, and more. This experience was horrible. This shouldnt even matter.. They additionally had a male worker guard the door while we tried to work out the split check we requested. Bias at its best. I will never return to this location. Discriminatory, rude, and poor service. I was told you were better. Maybe Covid changed your treatment of various customers.
Chandni Restaurant
5748 Mowry School Rd, Newark, CA 94560, United States
If you're planning on booking this venue for a private event. I do not recommend it at all as they are thieves. The manager Mohammed will sell you the world and not deliver as he verbally told us that if anything was left behind, they will check the camera footage and return it back to us. This was a lie, our boxes were left behind and Mohammed told me that their video guy will come in and get me the footage and email it to me after reviewing it. They said the video is good for 7 days until it's starts recording over the video. After reviewing the footage I was informed that the footage was deleted. These were $6,000 worth cash that was left in gifts behind that either the venue or the staff stole it. To top it off, I will be reporting this business to the IRS as you are telling your clients to send you cash to a different persons account that we have track off. Entire experience with this venue has been a nightmare. 100% do not recommend
Bonchon Newark
39770 Cedar Blvd, Newark, CA 94560, United States
Ordered 30 wings (only) through DoorDash. Received wings and drumsticks combo (even the receipt shows it is a combo). When I called the restaurant, I was amazed by the responses.1. First of all, the girl at the restaurant asked me are you sure because our wings have the small drum part. Are you trying to insult a customer that she cant tell a whole wing from a drumstick?2. Then, as the conversation went on, she said I remember packing your order, I gave you 30 wings. When I told her hello, even your receipt said combo and I have all these unwanted drumsticks in front of me; then her answer was DoorDash messed up the order. Hello again, you think the poor DoorDash driver can magically found 15 drumsticks to mess up the order?3. Finally, she told me you have to contact DoorDash because technically you are their customer not ours. Hello again!Enjoy the pictures. Bonchon, you may be amazed by how yourself sounded! $45 got me a good laugh and unwanted drumsticks! Hope you get something out of it too.
O Sushi Newark
34940 Newark Blvd, Newark, CA 94560, United States
I tried O’ Sushi & Sashimi. The quality of sushi and sashimi could be fair enough for the taste of Americans, but it felt poor for me as Im from an Asian country where sushi and sashimi are a lot more common. Every piece in this menu is cheap parts of fish. Salmon is the least bad among them. So Id rather suggest other menu like salmon rolls. Actually its not this restaurants fault, but just very hard to find a good sushi place in the US.
Taos Fresh
6185 Jarvis Ave, Newark, CA 94560, United States
I ate here on numerous occasions, but due to my recent experience, I will not be bringing myself & my family here again. The previous times that Ive eaten here (around 5-6), I had an overall good experience. The food was great, the service was good, and it was just a good place for my family to dine in and enjoy the time overall. However, on my most recent visit (the 11th), my wife and I decided to eat here to celebrate our son, turning 6 months. We went during a weekday in the evening, so it was pretty busy but not overwhelmingly busy.We ordered a set of appetizers and our main dishes and topped it off with boba that they have.We were not asked a single time on how we were doing and if we needed anything. We had to wait for the server to be completely free just to get her attention in order to get additional napkins. On top of that, the server only gave a single piece of a napkin, which absolutely felt like an insult due to their small size and the apparent cost cutting measures they were doing. For the appetizers, my wife and I ordered their Pot Stickers and Walnut Prawns.Prawns were good, well sized, evenly glazed, and topped with a good amount of walnut. It was crispy and very flavorful. The pot stickers were bland, no crisp to them whatsoever, and the filling was average at best. Overall, it was just very disappointing, to say the least.Onto the main entree, I ordered a rice plate with salmon and beef. Just like the pot stickers, it felt very bland, felt rushed, and for the extra beef that I added while ordering, it didnt feel justifable for what I have received to what was being charged. Ive eaten here numerous times and felt unsatisfied with my recent visit. The boba was spot on as always, no complaints, the brown sugar boba I had ordered was very flavorful, boba was soft and chewy, and had a creamy feel to it. The drink was good, to where I placed another order for it mid-meal. (10-15 mins prior to leaving)Towards the end is where it was very disappointing. I attempted to pay online via their website as I typically did the previous times I have been here. Ive tipped 15% each time I have been here, HOWEVER, this time, I have found out that with my recent visit, if you are DINING in, you are OBLIGED to pay a 15% tip that was not posted anywhere within the restaurant. Shoot, it wont even let you complete your payment online without tipping a minimum of 15%. Theres an option to put a custom amount, which was what I originally intended to do, but even with that, you must call the server over in order to complete your payment. So then, I decided to pay up at front. Payment went smoothly, with no issues until where she printed the receipt for me to sign. As soon as she handed it over, she pointed with the pen and reminded me to leave a tip. I already had a negative experience and kept my mouth shut as I told my wife that well just dine another time to see if our experience can justify our negative one, but when I was reminded to leave a tip, it was that cherry on top that prompted me to leave no tip. So when it came to the tip portion of the receipt, I marked it with a line signaling that I was not tipping for the experience that my family and I received. As I was done, I went to the bathroom to freshen up, reconnected with my family, and were heading over to the exit to carry on with our day. I told my wife to wait out at the front for the boba that I have ordered Mid-Meal that we havent received yet as I intended to bring our son to the car to get settled and what not to leave the area. Before I could walk out, after having had fully paid and what not, the OWNER stopped to confront me with the receipt I had signed earlier prompting me to leave a tip saying it was mandatory for ALL dine in guests regardless of their party size. I ALWAYS tip when I receive decent service and very rarely not. But when I chose not to tip for not getting decent service, I stood firm on it as Ive explained to the owner. In summary, I wouldnt recommend coming here unless you dont value your money.
Mumbai Chowk Newark
35144 Newark Blvd, Newark, CA 94560, United States
BAD EXPERIENCE! Horrible service! If I cud give -5 stars I wud.We just got out of this mess called Mumbai Chowk... These people didnt:1. Take our order properly2. Show any responsibility to own up to their fault3. Ask us if there is any problem when we were left in the mid of our meal with nothing to eat. Awaiting the waiter who wouldnt even acknowledge us nor the owner. These people did:1. Make us wait for our food, btw served in the wrong order. NEWS FLASH: APPETIZERS ARE TO BE SERVED AT THE START OF THE MEAL AND NOT TO BE SERVED AS BREADCRUMBS AS A MEANS TO KEEP THE POOR HUNGRY CUSTOMERS ENGAGED TILL THE REST OF THE MEAL IS SERVED!!!2. Ask other customers around us and got them customized service. We didnt know that we cud get MASALA PAPAD baked and not the oily mess we were served.(which was served after our chapati and curry, followed by a wait of 15 MINS for the next curry)This was our 3rd visit here. The first time we visited we were asked to write good reviews on yelp for a compensatory cup of tea. The second time we went at 9:10 (closing time is 10) and the board said OPEN but we were refused service saying that they were already closed. If you were closed, then there is a sign outside that should say CLOSED.(wrote a review on Google but looks like they took it down). And this time, for such a horrible experience how can these people earn good reviews???Suggestions:1. Please repeat orders if u cant get a hang of it in the first place.2. Serve all the main course dishes at once so the poor customers arent left in the lurch and embarrassed to ask the waiter to give them the food they asked for. Who wants to follow up with a waiter who doesnt even look your way and runs off at the back to avoid the consequences. ( the poor guy was sent back during billing since the owner had disappeared)3. They had put something funny in the tea. Smelt and tasted more like saunf.4. Please treat customers as they should be treated and dont ignore them or do petty things like running off to avoid their outburst. Not a mature way to handle customer grievances.Never coming back here! EVER!!!!!
Fairwood Cafe

Okay, we were lowkey sussed out by seeing an Asian restaurant serving so late at night but decided to try it since it couldn’t be worse than our other options of In N Out or McD’s at 11PM. But to our pleasant surprise, this place was pretty great! I was impressed with how extensive their menu is. Not only do they serve a multitude of Asian/Chinese dishes, but they also offer breakfast dishes like crepes, eggs, as well as fries and nuggets! We visited on a late Tuesday night and the restaurant was pretty busy so we took that as a good sign. The portions were huge for such decent pricing. We got the beef chow fun (amazing!), veggie crunchy stir fried noodles, and black pepper steak dishes. We also got the mango milkshake which was good but extremely sweet. We didn’t have to wait very long for our food to come out at all.HOWEVER : I will note that one of us ordered the beef ramen and got very very ill shortly after (intense sweating and nausea)… definitely steer clear of this dish ??Otherwise, the rest of us had a great experience and were pleasantly surprised. Hopefully this business continues to make great food available late night all while keeping decent prices!
