China House
125 Ocean View Blvd #126, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, United States
There was only one server and I had a party of 15. The server was nice. However, the service was just bad for my party. The server didnt give us water after requesting several times. Eventually, we got our own glasses of water. But she did give water to all of the other parties that came after my party. She didnt take our order until we told her twice that we were ready. She was giving good service to other parties but ours. My party wasnt being rude or obnoxious. We were polite and patient. However, it appeared that she took advantage of that and tended to her other customers. Honestly, I think she ignored my party because: 1. She will get gratitudity regardless of her service 2. We are asian and not chinese. Overall, the food was ok. Nothing amazing. Lastly, when she gave us our tab, she didnt give us a breakdown of what we are being charged for. She only gave a total amount. And no fortune cookies for the kids. Never coming back.

Decent Chinese restaurant for Take Out orders. You can eat-in as well, but Ive found that the restaurant is quite often empty. The telephone for Take Our orders, on the other hand, rings off the hook.

After picking up my son from his school, my family went to this restaurant today (April 21, 2016)at 5:00pm. The lady who is the owner of this restaurant took our order. She was serious, no greetings from her but we started to make conversation with her asking how old is her restaurant and she answered back 4 years old. After 5 to 10 minutes our food was ready and that was great! My wife ordered spicy pork and while eating she found a hair and I suggested to show it to the lady. The lady said, it was not a hair but it was a ginger thread. So my wife went back to our table and our son wanted to see it. Our son made a comment like this Its really a hair Mom! Right there and then, the lady grabbed all our plates and glasses of water and said with an angry voice. Okay, you dont have to pay!. We were so shocked. We were not even finished with the food. And me and my son were still eating as we have a different order. I would say that this woman who claimed to be the owner was so RUDE in handling the problem like this. My wife said to her, my son is still finishing his food and were not done yet! But she continued acting being rude with no manners infront of us, especially infront of our son. I never experienced a server most especially an owner of a restaurant to be so rude and with no character. This is my message to the owner of this restaurant: I am an Engineer and my wife is working in a hotel for almost 15 years. And if you think that we just came to your restaurant and complained just to have a free meal SHAME ON YOU!

I saw this place on Google and was impressed by their reviews. I visited on a Sunday at 1.45pm, alone. After a 15 minute wait in the sun, where other larger groups were seated first (reasonable), I was asked to sit at the bar. My first impression is that although the place is small, 2 wait staff (one of which also doubles as bartender) is still insufficient. Tables were left uncleared and I could see people waiting for orders to be taken.I was then further ignored for another 20 minutes (despite informing the server I was ready to order once I stepped into the restaurant). One thing I noticed was the server explaining dishes and recommendations to everyone who stepped in, except me (Im a Singaporean Chinese, but my native tongue is English). I am not sure if this was a norm or maybe it was because I already knew what I wanted to have, but I would have liked to know they had watermelon juices, mushrooms were their specialty etc. In any case, being ignored did not feel good. I noticed the same happening for the Indian and Chinese parties seated behind me too. The server also consistently advertised their fresh watermelon water which was simply watermelon juice. I am unsure if fresh watermelon juice was a rarity in the Monterey, but it was slightly amusing to listen to.When the food finally arrived 17 minutes from the time I ordered, I was not impressed. I had ordered the highly-raved yellow curry with an addition of lions mane mushrooms. It was served hot at least, but the taste was rather monotonous and not spicy at all for a curry. The ingredients were plentiful, but none of them carried the curry taste beyond the initial first taste.FYI, I was seated at the right corner of the bar (there were 4 seats at the bar), which had multiple fruit flies due to the tomatoes they left out (as decoration?). I had to shift before my food arrived, cos god knows what would happen if I ate at that seat.My water was also not refilled for the entire meal (thank god I had some in my car). All in all, it was a disappointing experience. The food was average, service was poor and made me feel discrimated against, and you could do better at another restaurant for the same price. I gave it 2 stars because the food is not horrible, just overly priced and average.
Passionfish
701 Lighthouse Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, United States
Passionfish aims high but didnt quite get there when we visited. I had the squid for starters and the tuna as a main. You wouldnt expect the squid to be crispy coated and fried in the fryer in a restaurant of this price range - well. The tuna was reasonably sized and well prepared but tasted of fish - which a fresh tuna shouldnt. Despite other reviews the dessert wasnt bad at all but tasteful. The wine selection is good as its the tea selection: loose leaf trees prepared in a Chinese tea pot - great idea! I wish more restaurants would offer this....
Fandango Restaurant
223 17th St, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, United States
Came here for the Christmas set menu, which was four courses for $65. I liked that every table had a dish of fresh olives right as you sit down. For starters, I had the tomato basil soup followed by the spinach mimosa (It was called mimoasa because the dressing had champagne in it). For the entree, I had the bay scallops with pasta, and dessert was a frozen souffle. Everything was okay, but nothing mind-blowing. I liked the scallops the best, which were cooked just right and slightly tender in the center. The scallops were pan-seared to a golden brown and also quite heavily buttered. I wished the whole dish were prepared more delicately. We were upsold a glass of wine that was wayy overpriced at $20 for a Cabernet Sauvignon from Monterey! They wouldnt show us the menu when we asked, and then the glass of wine turned out to be $20! Just wow.The frozen souffle also had liqueur in it, but that wasnt noted on the menu. I felt a bit woozy after eating it, and it would definitely not be safe for kids!I didnt realize this restaurant actually had a Spanish / European twist to it, and many of the employees spoke Spanish. The ambiance was a very quaint, old-timey Spanish setting.
Pacific Thai Cuisine
663 Lighthouse Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, United States
I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because the service was friendly but the food lacks the flavor and spice I love when in comes to Thai cuisine. I ordered Thai HOT there was ZERO kick or spice in the Eggplant Delight, not worth the price paid. The dish seemed more sweet like Chinese food. I guess I am spoiled when it comes to Asian food living in the SF Bay Area, when it comes to any Asian cuisine the Monterey / Carmel Area pretty much sucks, you are better off going to Panda Express. If you love Thai food like I do I would avoid it when visiting the area, the Asian food here is made for tourist visiting from the midwest. FYI: This is the 7th Asian restaurant Ive tried in the area... all were disappointing.
Aquinos Birrieria & Brunch
1116A Forest Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, United States
The food was barely passable. The rice and beans had no flavor. Im not sure if the beans came out of a can or not, but thats definitely not a good thing for Mexican food.As far as the atmosphere, when you walk in you go into what used to be a Chinese restaurant. It still has the Chinese wallpaper, tables, carved wood, and complete decor. Its a very odd setting for a Mexican restaurant. Once you are in, you are met with employees who are sitting in a waiting area that take your order. After you order with these employees, you walk into the restaurant and seat yourself. After that, you dont get waited on or seen by an employee until your food comes out. Once that food comes out, I hope your food tastes better than ours did. This was a very odd experience that I wouldnt suggest to anyone. I could do with the weird Chinese atmosphere if only the food tasted good. Even if the food was free, which it was cheap, the food is still not worth it. (Id rather eat Taco Bell which Im not a fan of.)
