Shunka Sushi & Japanese Cuisine
369 E 17th St #17th, Costa Mesa, CA 92627, United States
Shunka is a Sushi & Japanese food restaurant in Costa Mesa in a strip mall where there are other good food restaurant such as the Plum Cafe.Their lunch is reasonably priced for getting many combinations. My favorite is a mini chirashi bowl with Tempura. You are able to get the same sashimi as you would sitting in the sushi counter. The mini bowl provides for lesser rice which helps not getting carbo coma after eating. Given that the predominate clientele is not japanese they have adjusted to western serving protocols. I have to tell them not to bring the miso soup upfront before the meals to bring it when the main dish is prepared to be served. The miso soup was also not piping hot as it should be. this is to accomodate western clients who are not careful in blowing on the soup before drinking. Otherwise the food and service is very good.

Wafu of Japan

My husband and I love to eat at Wafu, one of the best Japanese restaurant in Orange County. They are own by Japanese and run as such. Now days too many Japanese restaurants are own and operated by other Asian and its not the same!

Meiji Seimen Costa Mesa
1113 Baker St E, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States
There is a plethora of good eats around Costa Mesa and Irvine, and because I do not find myself down here very often, I decided to ask a friend for some suggestions. He provided me with various options and I upon reviewing the menu and images, found that Meiji Seimen was definitely the place to go!It’s located in a small plaza and is easily missed, I recommend searching for the stores next door, since their signage is in Kanji, with the text underneath saying “Japanese Restaurant”. The interior is small and quaint, I enjoyed the simplicity and the vibe just screamed Japanese. Their menu consisted of udon, soba, appetizers and other various snacks!I started off the meal with a rice cake wrapped in bean curd, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The rice cake had a wonderful consistency and it was very gelatinous and smooth. The dashimaki was also very delicious, had a slight sweet flavor resembling tamago. The raddish that topped the egg gave it a very fresh feeling. The curry udon was very aromatic. The curry broth was consistent and had just the right amount of everything! It was flavorful without being too overbearing, and the udon was nice and bouncy! I was very happy with my meal and look forward to coming back and trying their soba!

Manpuku Japanese BBQ Costa Mesa
891 Baker St, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States
This is the Costa Mesa outlet of Manpuku Japanese Yakiniku Restaurant. Most of the beef are USDA Prime or American Wagyu type cuts. They did offer 3.5 oz Grade A5 chuck steak sliced to 6 pieces at $68. We ordered quite a variety of cuts including tongue, skirt steak, hanger steak, ribeye, etc. Their butter fried rice was a bit small to share but was quite good. Kimchi sample is also good but a bit pricy. They give you a free ice cream plate for your birthday. Parking is quite limited on this popular strip mall due to other quite popular restaurants, tea shops and bar inside.

Izakaya Hachi
3033 Bristol St D, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States
I believe that most of people in the US still don't know Motsu Nabe which is an intestine hot pot and how tasty it is.If you have been to Japan, you would know that whenever you suddenly start wanting to eat something particularly, you can most likely find and get it. That impulse feeling happened to me yesterday as I really want to eat Motsu Nabe.I noticed that there are some restaurants provide it here in Orange County. I researched rating of each restaurant, review and distance then I decided to go to this Izakaya restaurant.Although I usually talk with restaurant's people how they get food and how they cook etc, I just didn't have a chance to talk this time. The first thing what I was impressed was raw oysters. I was just wondering where they got them. Ponze which soy sauce with vinegar which is one of the most popular ways to eat worked so much too me. It was delicious.Other dishes like gobo (root) sliced chips and Sashimi were great but I want to talk about the Motsu Nabe. Of course it was not as good as really good one in Japan but it had decent taste which I can be satisfied. They have soy sauce soup and spicy miso soup choices. They provide rice or ramen to put in the hot pot afterwards. Taste and quantity wise it's worth to try. They also have Izakaya drink like sake, shochu and Chu-hi as well.

Yuzu Japanese Sushi Bar
103 E 17th St STE 3, Costa Mesa, CA 92627, United States
New local Japanese sushi bar restaurant in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa area. YUZU is TOP NOTCH. From the fresh seafood selection to the preparation, to the service from the staff and overall quality/taste of each dish. Everything was on point. We loved the yellowtail carpaccio and the crispy rice with Toro. Dont forget to order the Yuzu Drop and The Sweetheart for cocktails! Hands down some of the best sushi in Orange County. Well be back!

Since this is a small restaurant you might have to wait in line for dinner on weekends, but its a worth a waiting because of the food and their servers are happy to serve their customers. Always Im please to be their. I would definitely recommend to my friends.

Eats Sushi
1175 Baker St E25, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States
Great sushi restaurant, not an American style sushi roll restaurant with large portions. It is a Japanese-style restaurant with small portions and quality. There was an hour wait since it was a weekend, but it was worth it.

Sushi Town
2346 Newport Blvd # B3, Costa Mesa, CA 92627, United States
Nestled in a tiny strip mail along Newport Ave in Costa Mesa this little mom and pop sushi/Japanese restaurant has been around for over a decade. They must be doing something right because it was pretty buddy post lunch and pre-dinner. As the name implies they specialize in sushi but they also have other dishes like udon and yakisoba etc. so if youre not into the raw fish scene you have other choices. My son and i got the sushi combination plate while my two daughters got udon and wife got yakisoba. All of them looked and smelled amazing but my sushi was amazing. Fish that was raw was fresh and the cooked eel was so buttery good.Great place, if youre near the OC fair grounds theyre really close to that. Give it a try!

Anjin
3033 Bristol St, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States
Anjin is a small Japanese BBQ restaurant sitting in a busy plaza in Costa Mesa, serving good quality meats in diet friendly portions. With dinner service starting at 5pm, you can always count on there being a wait a little after the restaurant opens. The later into the evening you go, the longer the wait, until peak hours settle down (past 8:30/9pm). The good news is that theyre open late for folks that dont mind a late dinner or are hungry for a late night meal. Some of their best cuts of meat include the beef tongue, short ribs, and prime rib eye. Theyve got other proteins like chicken, sausage, and even asparagus wrapped in bacon. Their marinades are mild but flavorful (as is characteristic of Japanese food), but theyll seve you sesame oil with salt for dipping if youre more used to Korean bbq.The uncooked meats are also a treat here with the beef carpaccio and raw marinated beef (yukke, a personal favorite). They even have kimchi and similar pickled vegetables, which I find very tasty. Just dont expect the level of kick youre used to at a Korean place! Theyre all about umami here. There are decent soups and side dishes like bibimbap as well if you want variety. Ive yet to try their soju drinks, but theyve got an assortment of fruity options, including red grape soju, that look colorful and promising. Their almond jelly dessert is a really refreshing way to end your meal. The restaurant is cozy and warm with red booth seats and grills built into the table all around. Service is also usually pretty fast moving as theyre trying to keep up with their neverending wait-list. One of the better Japanese BBQ places near Irvine, but expect to pay a premium that you may not be used to with other types of barbeque. If youre more about volume over quality, youll want to go elsewhere. With that said, Anjin a good option to switch things up for a date night or hangout with friends.
