Pho Auntie 7

New vietnamese restaurant in Castro Valley, gave it a shot. Staff were friendly, and I can finally say we have some authentic vietnamese food in Castro Valley! BBH was flavorful, not too spicy. Finally can get some banh beo and not have to go to drive to SJ. Will definitely come back and try different dishes on the menu.
Pho Play

Went to taste the new vietnamese restaurant in Castro valley. The sign outside the place is great. Its easily spotted when you enter the parking lot. The service is very modern. You seat your self after ordering. Its the America version of vietnamese street food. The menu is setup to speed up the service. A few items in each category. After about 3 mins standing in a fairly short line. 4 orders before us. We ordered the lemongrass beef bao, rare beef and meatball pho, and bun bo hue. We also got a peach fruit tea and soda. The bao was by far the best item of the three. Large portion of meat filled the base of the bao topped with pickled carrots and daikon. The beef pho came with red rare beef. The portions of noodle to beef is balanced. The BBH from as far as I could tell is delicious. The pho only comes in one size, large. The peach fruit tea was really the only thing that we didnt like. We would of likes a black or green tea with peach. Not the fruit tea they use.Castro Valley newest vietnamese restuarant is worth a visit.Update: came back and ate the banh mi and egg rolls. Super soft roll for banh mi and possible frozen egg rolls. Banh mi is a 9/10. Egg rolls are a 4/10.

Updating my review from 5 stars to 2 in 2023.This place was amazing. It was a unique space that gave a platform to a variety of local small business owners and restaurants. The Cannery and Oculto were great places to share a meal with friends and family, and a much needed addition to the area.Over the last year, it seems the priorities and purpose of this space have shifted. Oakland Spice Shop, Oculto, the Cannery, and the Vietnamese restaurant nextdoor all disappeared overnight. A Bearded Papas was brought in, and the local rumor mill says folks got pushed out to make space for more commercial businesses.Really bummed about the direction ownership has taken this space.
Castro Valley Library
3600 Norbridge Ave, Castro Valley, CA 94546, United States
If I could not even give 1 star for the library staff I would! The staff needs to remember that when they are dealing with the public that they should all take a class on respect and communication. When you are explaining anything to anyone of any particular subject then you must be courteous, professional and especially polite with due respect. Not take whatever your emotions are and reflect them on to the public. I felt as if I were in the mean public school system being talked about and bullied! I realized when I brought my little baby Chihuahua in there that it wasnt the best idea due to the policies. I had to turn in my books on this particular date and it was very hot outside so I could not for the life of me leave my precious cargo in the car. I held him the whole time and didnt even try to do anything else but turn them in and ask a question when I disgruntle employee with blond hair came out and started to tell me about my pet and I calmly replied I understood meaning I knew it was wrong but I really in my heart had no other way but to take him in for a second or two to ask a question and turn in my things. I thought she would know I was an adult and completely understood her but NO! She had to rant at me 3 more times while some other disgruntle looking lady and other staff started to stare at me. This is totally unprofessional in the way that it was clear, cut and dry that I understood her but for some reason she had to drive it home with a bulldozer.I just told myself that she and the rest of unprofessional staff member who were glaring over had more going on in their lives than me and to forgive them for not being very Christ like. I will never ever be comfortable to seek any information from any of those who dont really know what its like to work with others in a public setting and know that they are truly representing the whole community. We have enough going on in this world we live in today and just need folks in our own community to treat one another with some respect and decency. Sorry for this but I feel it is important that we say something instead letting them think they can treat others in this manner as well and represent the library in this way. If I knew their names I would have put it in this review as well.
Milk & Cookie Bar

Great ice cream and unique flavors. Yum. Coffee Oreo cookie dough? Omg this is my favorite flavor ever. I want to stock my fridge with that banana Oreo and Thai tea. Miss the Vietnamese coffee flavor too. All employees working there have always had great customer service. Need to stock up when they open Saturday. This is probably the greatest coping with covid snack out there. Denicas Real Food Kitchen

What a total let down, so disappointed. After many months of seeing photos and reviews about this place we were excited to have a free Monday as a family and decided to drive all the way here from across the bay, figuring if we got there in the morning it wouldnt be busy, that was the only thing that worked out.To start, the guy taking our order at the register was very impatient and tapping his pen when I wasnt ordering as fast as his liking, almost told him off. There was no line, or crowd. Then to default to 15% tip for cafeteria style ordering where the only service is bringing out your food and things they forgot to bring...The food came out pretty fast which was somewhat worrisome but I didnt share my concerns with the family. Well suffice to say my fears were well founded. The bacon was obviously pre-cooked and perhaps just reheated on the grill, it was thick but had no crispness, it was limp and rubbery. The soft scramble was more like a folded omelette texture, definitely not soft and not a good scramble. Neither of them were finished. The Ube pancake was pretty good, sauce had a noticeable Ube flavor. Would consider ordering these again IF we ever went back.Mochiko chicken might have been refried but bottom line is it was so overcooked most of it was inedible. Hard and dry, we cut out some of the thicker parts for our daughter to eat but left the rest behind because it was like chicken jerky. The Pandan waffle had a good flavor, would be superior as a mochi waffle but thats not a deal breaker. The kalua pig moco wasnt bad. In fact Id say the kalua pig was expertly prepared, moist, good flavor, and had a nice crisp texture from the griddle. My over easy egg was overdone, more like over-well. The sourdough toast was more like a crouton, again, inedible. No jam was provided with it and I had to get up to find someone to ask for jam and butter to put on it (didnt realize it was hard and dry until I tried to eat it) needless to say I didnt eat it. Had a latte which sounded fancy with condensed or evaporated milk (dont remember) but ultimately just tasted like an ordinary latte. The other issue was not food related but worker related and reflected a total lack of pride in the environment for the customer. The plastic ketchup bottle was grimy and oily, gross. The two containers with pineapple jam were a sticky mess, like someone with jam on their hands packed each container and didnt bother to clean them. The syrup bottle was sticky so as soon as you handled it, you got syrup on your hands. It was like what you might think youd get in a tenderloin dive bar, not a $90 breakfast for three. We were pretty quiet and sad after but didnt have to speak, we were all thinking the same thing. It was just sad.
Dougs Place
20871 Redwood Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94546, United States
To be clear the food is great and theres at least 2 waiters working there that are absolutely outstanding at their job. Now for the bad. When you are the only decent breakfast restaurant in town you are going to be busy and most of the time they cant handle it. The cashiers are the Achilles heel of the place and not very good at what they do. They are slow, lack customer service skills, and force customers to work through frustration to pay for their meal. The food is good but you will work for it in frustration and personal space. You will feel crammed in, will bump into people constantly, will need to move to make way for other people or wait staff. If personal space is important to you or a pet peeve this is not the place for you. You wont be relaxed at any point of your time inside the place. I dont blame this on the restaurant however, theyre doing the best they can with the space they have. To sum it up the food is great, the experience is irritating, and the front end cashier staff are not very good at all with handling the chaos. Being a person that wants to relax when I have a meal I only dare to eat here once or twice a year. But if you like chaos and action while you eat this is the place for you. The food really is the best breakfast in Castro Valley.
China Garden
22253 Redwood Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94546, United States
This place is disgusting, i walked in there and there were two guests in front of my both picking up takeout orders. It took her 15 minutes to swipe two credit cards, and after that the lady looked me right in the eye and didnt even acknowledge or offer to help me or the other person waiting to place takeout orders. And when we said we wanted to place a order she gave us a stink face like we were wasting her time, not a welcoming environment at all. I ordered sesame chicken with no vegetables, shrimp fried rice with no vegetables, and crab rangoon. My wife ate one bite of the chicken and almost threw up, they still put vegetables in in the rice, and it smelled like fish. And the rangoon was the worst, it was like stale wontons that had been left out for a month in the california heat and then left in a pantry at room temp for another month, they shattered like glass, my dog didnt even want any and he eats everything. When you open a business especially one that serves food, i though you were supposed to have pride in what you serve, and try to be the best you can. When your serving your ethnic food in america we would appreciate if you cook it like you would back in your home country. This place needs to re evaluate completely.Disgusting and i don't recommend to anyoneIm not even gonna give this to someone on the streets, they dont deserve something so nasty, instead im giving the next person i see whose struggling $20, and telling them not to spend it here
