This is some of the best Chinese food that Ive ever had. Its pricey, but its well worth it. If this place were cheaper I know I would eat there a lot more frequently, and gain a lot more weight! Lol. ?My husband and I order this a la carte Chinese food from this place for special occasions by calling over the phone and by placing our usual order, and its typically around $45. We order 2 orders of the chicken fried rice, vegetable lo mein, beef with broccoli, Kung Pao shrimp, and they always include free steamed white rice in the order along with fortune cookies,of course. ? I highly recommend this place, its not a Chinese buffet and the food on the menu is perhaps pricier than a Chinese buffet, but the taste is well worth it.
Cho XO Asian Fusion
1420 E Plaza Blvd Suite D-05, National City, CA 91950, United States
I was so excited for the first Asian Latin Fusion restaurant in San Diego that serves dishes like Lomo saltado shaken fries, Tom Yum pasta, and birria. These dishes have been trendy for years in other parts of SoCal and Bay Area and I was looking forward to not having to travel hours for them. When I found out Chào XO was participating in SDRW, I immediately made plans with my SO to try their dinner menu. In my excitement, I invited some friends, but in the end Im glad they didnt come or else I wouldve felt bad for them spending so much time and money to trek to the other side of town for a lackluster meal.Restaurant decor: the design and decor of the restaurant is very modern and chic. Love the large modern art around, the furniture, and the grassy/leaves.Service: friendly and professional, a little bit slow for our food to come out on a Saturday night (25-30 min). One of our entrees came first before any of our appetizers did. Because we were starving, we dug in without waiting for the appetizers.Birria Truffle Fries:Surprisingly big serving size for an appetizer. The meat was so soft and perfectly seasoned (not too salty). The truffle flavor oil was nice and not overpowered.Unfortunately the tragic flaw of this dish was that the fries were so soggy from the sauce it was sitting in. The fries could use a little more cooking (current state like In-N-Outs fries).Another suggestion would be to have the birria consume sauce on the side, instead of all over the fries.Tom Yum Pasta: *allergen alert* it contains shrimp!I could not tell from the menu that it had any protein in it, but was pleasantly surprised that it came with large succulent shrimps. The shrimps were perfectly cooked--juicy with a nice chew. The linguine was Al dente and the sauce was delightfully cheesy. The presentation was fantastic as it came out sizzling on a hot plate.Where it fell short was there was 0 Tom Yum flavor. Not a hint of sour, tamarind, or herbs like galangal or kaffir like leaf. As a pasta dish, this was stellar, but dont expect Tom Yum.Lomo Saltado:Filet mignon Beef: delicious and tender, a little bit too salty.Rice: a little dry, but it was necessary to even out the saltiness of the beef. Big serving size.Fries: like in the birria truffle fries, undercooked and not crispy. Big serving size.Cilantro sauce: Tasty! My favorite part of this dish.Fresa con cream: this was a surprise that it came out purple/ube when the menu didnt indicate so. It came with sliced strawberry and plenty of cream. Sweet, but not too sweet and balanced from the tart strawberry. Presentation: beautiful color, in a margarita cup with a purple orchid.Overall the food concepts were good, presentation was fantastic, and ambience was pleasant, but executions fell short:Underdone soft/soggy fries, salty saltado meat and dry rice, and misleading menu. But a positive note was that the food wasnt too oily/heavy, which led to a light-feeling stomach despite the late night meal.
Royal Mandarin
1132 E Plaza Blvd #205, National City, CA 91950, United States
Came to dine in after a long hike and had a big appetite!! Wanted to try the hype regarding the wings. No frills Chinese restaurant with spacious seating, no wait to come in, and attentive staff. Immediately given waters and complimentary wonton chips. We ordered a large egg drop soup to share, lumpia, salt and pepper chicken wings, fried squid, and fried combination thick cut noodles. The soup was so warm and inviting, tasted great with the wonton chips. I loved the flavor and seasoning on the fried squid. The fried chicken were very plump, meaty on the bone, and crispy. The noodles werent extraordinary, but I always love ordering it as a Chinese side dish.Overall, enjoyed the experience. The food was filling, warm, comforting, fresh, and spicy. There was no wait to sit in, we had an array of great sauces to try our food in, and the staff were attentive. Id come again if I craved this food again and I happened to be in the area.
Golden Chopsticks Restaurant
1430 E Plaza Blvd, National City, CA 91950, United States
Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings!Yup, it’s what makes Golden Chopsticks Restaurant and its rival Royal Mandarin so popular.Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings are a staple at family gatherings in San Diego but this is the first time I dined inside the restaurant.Golden Chopsticks Restaurant is a mid-to-large sized, casual, sit-down Chinese restaurant located on Plaza Blvd and Palm Ave in National City, near IHOP and Jo-Ann’s Fabrics. Getting here via Google Maps is easy but the parking is a bit crazy. It has a shared lot between businesses - plenty of parking spaces but most are unavailable during the weekend. Consider your vehicle choice before coming here because the parking spaces are tight for large trucks and SUV’s.The ambiance inside the “private” room to the right was beautiful - open and brightly lit with natural light. I say private room because our large party took up the entire space minus 2 tables. I loved the large artwork in the back wall. Noise level is loud here. The staff were able to service our party and get all the dishes and drinks out. The tableware was neatly organized and the condiments were plentiful and easily accessible at every table. We had a preselected, family-style menu across all the tables, which included their famous Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings. It was better eating it dined-in than served in party trays at the family parties I’ve had in the past. I did, however, like the Salt & Pepper Squid (Calamari) more than the chicken. The Beef Broccoli was my favorite of all the dishes. We also ate had noodles and fried rice. While I enjoyed the dishes, the post-meal inflammation did not.Overall, it’s a decent spot for a step-above-casual-dining Chinese food. The salt and pepper dishes are addicting but I’ll probably stick to the Beef Broccoli.
Bistro City
1819 E Plaza Blvd #3701, National City, CA 91950, United States
BLUF: 2 stars for ease of finding and generous of food. However, there is no substitute for quality and taste. Will not return. Would not recommend.Food ordered: Dumplings, chicken skewers, kung pao chicken and house special chow fun. About $40 plus a tip.Food: While the portions where quite generous the taste was very subpar and bland. Appetizers where the overall highlight if you will. The steamed dumplings had some pop and a bit of taste but the overall flavor lacked. The chicken skewers where crunchy dry exterior, okay internal moisture but very little flavor. The main courses where very bland and not easily enhanced with items such as salt, pepper or soy sauce. Overall the talking point should always be food and flavor which missed the mark. They also forgot an order of rice which was included in the meal which I did not catch before departure.Price point: For what we paid I expected much better. While the generous portions did make up for the cost, that is no substitute for taste. Panda Express, Star Express or equivalent would be a fair better option for the price point.Location: The location was easy to spot and parking was ample. The difficulty was leaving if your headed east. The inherent busy area and the need to cross Plaza made for increased risks of accidents coupled with poor drivers resulted in a near miss just leaving the parki g lot. This is enough for me to avoid this location alone but that is also subjective.Atmosphere: Due to COVID we didnt dine in but nothing really stood out in my brief moments inside.
Seafood City Supermarket

Fresh seafood! Awesone point-point restaurant inside. Great selection of homeland spices and frozen foods as well as canned goods. Got a huge selection of Filipino snacks too. They also carry a lot of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese goods. Also they have Indo noodles.
The Barbecue Pit
920 E Plaza Blvd #12, National City, CA 91950, United States
Pulled pork was superrrrr dry and tasteless. Had to drown it with BBQ sauce to it choke down. Slaw was weird and not very edible. The beans were ok, but they were like pinto beans and not bbq beans and didnt go with the meal. Im from the South, and havent been able to find any decent BBQ since Ive been forced to move to California. I even told the owner who was working the front counter that, and he assured me oh man, were from Texas and we make the best darn bbq u ever had. Lol NOT. The thing they were famous for was the mac n cheese, but the man who comes in once a week to make it didnt come in to work that day I was told. Maybe if their employee would have come to work it might have saved the meal and bumped them to 2 or 3 stars, but no. Also WAY OVERPRICED. Would never go back and pay that much for 2 people to eat bbq.
Ginza Sushi
925 E Plaza Blvd #108, National City, CA 91950, United States
I used to like this place for their food having good flavor & being priced a bit lower than at other sushi places, but yesterday was disappointing. They've never been the friendliest, which is fine by me, but they have gotten straight up careless about showing basic courtesy or attention to customers; Don't expect to be greeted- just barge in and sit down. Also, be ready to order within minutes or they'll punish you by taking forever to come back to ask again. If you need anything else after your food has been brought, holler and wave because the ladies will always pretend not to hear you unless you are obnoxiously loud or get up and go get them yourself. Yesterday something nasty happened: there were two chunks of something thin on the walls of my cup of sprite- like lettuce or ginger idk- I didn't make a big fuzz I was discrete. When my friend and I managed to get the lady's attention by both saying “excusemeeee” in synchronization, I showed the lady and she took it to the back to “bring another… Sorry about that” Unfortunately, for me and congratulations to her I guess, she got me because it wasn't til I was almost leaving that I noticed the same exact two chunks of food in my drink! Lol! Kinda funny, how they were slick about it. I don't think it'll kill me, but also I am disgusted by it and their behavior. I didn't bother to mention it on my way out. I just paid and even added a farewell tip because Pffft! what was I gonna do? Ask to speak to a manager? Ask them to deduct a soda off my check? Hahah! Just know that I am disgusted enough to never return and certainly won't be recommending them. I feel bad for the chefs & wish I could rate them separately, 5star: the sushi presentation is beautiful.
Zarlitos Family Restaurant
505 E 8th St, National City, CA 91950, United States
In my beloved Filipino centric National City sits a changing view on traditional Filipino cuisine, giving established traditionalists like Conchings a run for their money. Though not as old, they arent new, but theyve adapted to a true local flair and modern flavor vehicles. For those who know of the mythical beast called Carne Asada Fries, but you grew up like me and wanted to throw our islander style meats on their (long before the words Asian Fusion or the Korean Taco truck) westernized palate. This isnt as crazy as it sounds.Tonico, longonisa, adobo, sisig mixed with fries, thrown in tacos or wrapped in burritos are any Filipino foodies childhood dream. To me the menu is very clear, many add ons. if they have it then they can do it. To those in the know GFR is Garlic Fried Rice, a staple for any islander diet. The next level was the garlic French fries. So instead of the classic plate they offer garlic style French fries with all the fixings you would have on a plate item . Very Carne Asada Fries-esque from an Ertos.I usually come here in the day time, unlike most of my food escapes for Mexican in the area, this is my peoples cooking. Its really more of the family spot, order up and share, fast food though. The hours also dont quite appeal to the nocturnal foodie bachelor as I often need the fix well after midnight, except on weekends. They open pretty early.Call ahead and it will be ready for a swoop, especially when I do sneak attack stealthmode trips from Oceanside. Parking sucks carabao hooves. Do not go here on Sundays its fam bam central for pre-post church eats. They need a freaking drive thru for my pickups. They have longanisa fried rice, loco moco chorizo fried rice, bistek torta, all excellent mixes of traditional and modern gluttony. Its a must visit for anyone who is adventurous enough to try a taco food truck, but traditional enough to cook at home.
