Went here because a friend of mine recommended it. I love sushi and this place seemed really good.I think one of the people who served us was named Jay. He was super helpful and explained the menu to us. We ended up getting the Ocean and the Ocean Blessing sets, as well as the Salmon Fresca.The fish was very fresh and high quality. Our server also took the time to explain each of the pieces of fish. Presentation was amazing, you can tell that the chefs not only care about the quality of food, but also the way it looks, which I think adds to the experience. Honestly it was one of the best omakase sets Ive had in the OC. Ive had sushi in Japan as well and this place is definitely comparable.We also had hot green tea, which our servers were kind enough to keep our mugs filled throughout our meal. For dessert we got the green tea ice cream as well as the green tea mochi.Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Food quality and service were on point. It wasnt too busy but even if it were, you can tell that they emphasize service here.My friend and I even stayed late chatting and they didnt bother us even after they started closing. We were so appreciative that they were very thoughtful and didnt kick us out.Highly recommend this place for any sushi lovers.

Came here for my quick lunch break. I didnt know what to expect because their outside restaurant sign listed Hamburgers, Sushi, Seafood. Quite the find. Michael greeted me right away with a warm welcome. Had me take a seat. Gave me hot tea & a small bowl of Hot & Sour Soup on the house while I looked over the menu. The soup was very fulfilling in quantity & flavor! I was doubly pleased when my Eggplant with Hot Garlic Sauce arrived. The very distinct basil taste with a great mix of ginger, green & white onions added to the perfectly tasting Eggplant base. I had some over white rice. So yummy for my tummy! It was the right amount of spicy & the sauteed Japanese eggplant was not too firm, not too soft but just right. Ill definitely be a regular here because there are so many other appealing dishes to still try. Ill make sure to have Michael wait on me whenever possible. Its genuine & friendly people like him who add to the appeal of any restaurant. Come on down if you happen to find yourself in Newport Beach.

The worse sushi place we’ve ever been. We love Japanese restaurants and we know what good sushi, rolls and sashimi are. The taste of the rolls was like you bought them in the grocery store, and ridiculously small portions. Sushi were small and didn’t taste good at all. We think, it was a waste of our money and time. I would not recommend this place to anyone. If you want a good Japanese food go to Gen Kai.

Doesnt even earn one star. The food was good. Not to bad on prices. But the service oh my god. First off we stood at the front door for 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us or sat us. First red light. Then after that we got our drinks pretty quickly so I thought okay not so bad. Then it took us almost an hour before they took our order. As well as the host/waiter forgot to give us a pen so we could mark which rolls we wanted. He gave us a pen about 50 minutes in. Then it took 10 more minutes before he came back to actually take the order from us. Everyone in the place was totally wasted, really loud and all douche bags. (Which I cant blame the restaurant for that). Also another 30 minutes for our food. (Not bad not bad) We didnt receive refills the entire time we where there and no one asked us how anything was or checked up on us. All because we didnt order drinks. We (the only sober people in the building) received no service why everyone else received excellent service. Sakae Sushi more like Sucky Sushi.

Definitely the best Japanese restaurant in Newport! The food is authentic and plentiful. The staff always greets me as I arrive to pick up my order, and the waiters are polite and friendly. The atmosphere is high class and has good vibes. 5 stars!

Newport Fresh is hands down the best place to eat in Orange County! I used to visit all the time when I lived in Newport Beach, and the chicken and egg bowl (medium spicy) and the sashimi bowl (medium spicy) are simply out of this world. If youre looking for a fancy menu or a well decorated place, this isnt it. But if you try one of those two bowls, youll be mind blown every time.Sadly, Danny and Monica are retiring and closing down my favorite restaurant at the end of July. They will be legends in OC for years to come. Saying goodbye to Newport Fresh is saying goodbye to the only fish restaurant that truly matters. Bear Flag or Nobu cant even compete. Thank you, Danny and Monica, for all the incredible meals and memories!
