Aki Sushi

The food at this Japanese restaurant is as good or better than any in the Palm Springs area and for much better prices. Its worth the 45 min. drive. We had the fresh-rolled Baked Lobster Roll, which melted in our mouths with explosive tastes, and the Salmon Love Roll with delightful flavors and a tiny crunch (see photo).

Posting this same review to help this business out that I posted on the other review site since they were so nice to me:-------I havent posted a review in a bit but decided to after the awesome service I received here. First of all, the food was pretty amazing - was not expecting this level of delicious sushi in the desert. My wife and I were taking the baby for a drive when we saw this place - doesnt look the fanciest from the outside but wife wanted sushi - so we had to get sushi.Wow, the sushi was really good - rolls were really big and the sushi was very fresh - I saw that they just opened so Im hoping it will continue to be that way as I plan to stop by here anytime I am in the area. I was really expecting less than fresh sushi but it was so delicious - in fact, everything here was pretty spot on. I also had the fried rice which was HUGE and delicious - not overly salty like other places but has a very clean savory taste. But more than anything, the service was top notch. The server was super friendly and the chef was very nice. I think I came at a slower time so they were able to talk to us more - but really, I was very happy with the hospitality. I definitely will be coming here more as I really liked the food and atmosphere. Not super fancy but really nice overall.

I love Last Word Hospitality restaurants to the moon and back but this ain't it.We sat down at 7:15, ordered at 7:25, first appetizer (marinated cucumbers) landed on our table at 8:25. This is royally messed up on so many fronts I don't even know where to start. Maybe it's worth pointing out the 20% mandatory service charge in every check that I dislike with all my heart, yet still agree to support Last Word Hospitality restaurants and always gladly tip, but paying extra $40 for waiting an hour only to get marinated cucumbers that should've been served 10 minutes after accepting the order is straight up robbery. We didn't ask to take the service charge our but I've never been closer.3 of the 7 dishes we ordered were sold out at 7:25. What?!! Isn't this a restaurant where you know, you get food that's on the (very limited) menu? Never seen anything like that and will never understand how a restaurant can be our of vegetable fried rice.My cocktail was delicious.Food was okay. Above expectations for the location, but nothing to come back to.Toilets were tired and beat up and definitely not a match to the restaurant price level and cooking ambition. I don't go to dinners for toilets, but the contrast of a $17/cocktail restaurant with a dive bar restrooms just felt…odd?I will never be back that's for sure. Big yikes, Last Word people.Updating my review with a note that there's a lawsuit against Last Word Hospitality (mostly LA restaurants) accusing them of withholding tips that they bill as a 20% service charge. I don't think I'll ever go to any of their restaurants, even though I'll miss Found Oyster dearly. Biggest of yikes, Last Word people.

Got two VERY expensive bobas, the worst tasting as well.thai tea boba ($5): 0/5 star; taste chalky, very artificial. color looks bright orange, not the authentic dark orange-tea color you get.taro smoothie ($10!!): 0/5; taste chalky, not a smoothie-like at all.however, owners are kind, the restaurant is clean, the japanese toilets are a bonus.

We just had a bad experience there as well. It was very awkward and nothing more promising than cafeteria Thai, to be honest. Six of us went and you'd think we were ordering Thai food from a burger joint because the Thai lingo (per sae) was so foreign to the waiter. For example, 3 of us ordered chicken Pad See Ew. We asked what their spice ratings were. We had to explain that to the waiter and it still wasn't fully understood. One of us agreed on “level 2” which was considered to be medium. The waiter brought out what he said was beef Pad See Ew. We advised him we ordered chicken. He went back to the kitchen and brought back out chicken? The chicken was cold as it had obviously been pre-prepared because how else could we bow have chicken in our Pad See Ew in less than 2 mins. Additionally, they didn't know who's order had the level 2 that I mentioned above so we just awkwardly took whichever was handed to us. Well, mine was so unbelievably hot that it was not edible and I can handle spice, trust me. The other 2, one had chili flakes poured over the top and the other had none. Neither of our 3 orders matched in appearance - at all. The others' in our party said their food, which was shrimp fried rice, was mushy. The other who ordered teriyaki had a few pieces of dried and very hard chicken that it was dark orange and couldn't be cut with a knife. Maybe a tablespoon of teriyaki sauce on her dish. When we asked for more sauce, another literal tablespoon was handed to us. Oh, and I may have forgot to mention that don't even try asking any details about their menu, you'll be looked at with such confusion. For example, “does you garlic chicken come breaded or sauced”? You'll be told yes, you'll order it, and then after the food is done you'll be told that it's not breaded or sauced, what else would you like? But this is after everyone's food is already made LOL. The waiter is very nice by the way, but just really needs to study the menu. Since our food took over ONE AND A HALF HOURS to make it out, we had no choice but to just stay and wait it out. We were absolutely starving and didn't know what else we could do to eat as it was approaching 8pm now. When we were clearly done eating, or rather, wanting to leave, we could not get our check for the life of us so my son walked up to the register and asked kindly if we may have our check. He was advised that they would bring it right over. Ten mins passes, (mind you, we have now been here for TWO HOURS, and want to leave. It was loud, food was gross, service was a cluster F). My son went back up to the register to ask for the check again and there was a woman with very short hair who visibly became so frustrated with my son that he had the audacity to ask again, that she physically shoulder checked him as she walked by and glared at him. Everyone in our party saw this happen and so I walked up to her and asked her if there were some thing we did to frustrate her because we just watched her do that to my son. She backpedaled became very apologetic and said that it must be due to her mask that we misunderstood her actions?! Nearly $100 and probably the worst dining experience we've ever had to date. It's a shame the prior owner sold because they were terrific, kind, delicious, & consistent.

Aki Sushi is the best sushi restaurant in the high desert area that I have found and packs a perfect to go dinner or lunch for picnicking. We took ours to the Black Rock campgrounds close by to have a rare January snow-side picnic. Aki looks to serve traditional Japanese dishes, as well as specials, cut and hand rolls, ramen and churashi bowls, and a wide assortment of special cut rolls. Some favorites are the garlic edamame, the Ultimate Albacore roll, the Baked Lobster Roll, the Popcorn Lobster Roll, and the Viking Roll, which travel well. During COVID they have had a nice assortment of Japanese beers and cold sakis available to go. This is a busy place for take out, especially at dinner time, so during covid-19 be sure to order early. No indoor or outdoor eating during COVID (January 2021.)
