Ipoh Kopitiam
1411 S Garfield Ave #104, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
Having always seen many people waiting outside of this relatively new restaurant in Alhambra, I was wondering why the buzz with this restaurant. Today, we had a chance to visit this restaurant and OMG, this is the best Singaporean/Malaysian restaurant in the SGV if not for the entire Southern California. The foods are authentically Nyonya food which were originated from Pengnan ( northern Malaysia) and transplanted to Singapore. But form talking to the waiters, Ipoh Kopitiam supposed to mean a Coffee Shop. But since I don’t drink coffee that much, I was there to enjoy the South East Asian food. I was at the right place. All dishes are so good. The key is in their ingredients. The restaurant keeps the original ingredients for each dish to produce authentic tastes. Their famous Char Koay Teow uses the best flat rice noodle, Chinese sausage, and pork fat to create a very flavorful fried noodle dish. For their Hainan chicken, they use free ranch yellow chicken to give that juicy and tender dark meat the famous texture. When combine with the ginger scallion and sweet soy sauce, the whole dish produces a perfect taste thats suitable for a kings feast. In addition to these two dishes, you got to have their roti. Dipping in a homemade curry sauce, I can probably eat a few orders of the rotis, they are so good. For those HK cafe lovers, this restaurant has a very good HK milk tea, smooth and silky. To go with the milk tea, they also offer the famous HK pineapple buns.To avoid the long lines, you can sign up on the Yelp waiting list. If you must go there on the weekends, go early to get yourself a spot on the waiting list.

Savoy Kitchen
138 E Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
Rating Savoys alone for the Hainan Chicken rice, one of my favorite dishes and ways to eat chicken and rice, and Ill admit Ive only tried it once last year. I have been spending some time trying to find great versions of it outside Asia, ultimately with no success. Most versions lack any proper resemblance to the iconic South East Asian dish that it truly is, simply served as boiled chicken and white rice with some soy sauce and ginger or garlic mixed in on the side.So I finally decided to get to Savoys after hearing so much. Usually I dont rate food too strictly, but since Ive grown up with this dish in China, I cant grade it on a curve. In all honesty, I feel that Savoys version is at best a solid 7/10, since its not so bastardized. The chicken prepared isnt that flavorful or juicy, coming off slightly overdone, and not presented well, as you can see the sprawled, pale chicken skin in the picture. You do have the traditional three sauce spread of ginger oil, hot chili sauce, and a slightly sweet dark soy that is a tad too thin in viscosity. Perhaps most importantly, the flavored chicken fat rice isnt fragrant and aromatic enough, coming off as white rice with a very mild chicken broth taste. Is it tasty? Its pretty decent, but I definitely wouldnt say its amazing, especially if you have to take long trek depending how far you live. But I will say if you are a big HCR fan like myself, go at least once to try and compare. Perhaps it will always have its place in SGV lore. However, since then I have had the chance to try Cluck2go, which does a solid job for an even cheaper price AND they take card, no wait or lines too. Surprisingly, Mee and Greet in Palms has a nice version, which is a slightly more modern take albeit a bit pricier but it is located on the Westside. Id much rather go the distance for Cluck2go and am glad Mee+Greet is close by for me. Also I have yet to try Sidechick in Alhambra.I think the key thing for such a dish is taking the time to do the little things required and using quality ingredients to extract as much of the pure flavors as possible and letting them shine. Which Savoy does an alright job of, not excellent though. However, to their credit, Hainanese Chicken Rice is a simple looking chicken and rice dish that can actually be notoriously challenging.

99 Ranch Market
345 E Main St, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
I like this store that the fact theres never usually a long wait.Overall its clean and organized. They have plenty sauce selection. My biggest concern is the bakery department. I went in there the last few times recently and the young lady with long black hair wearing prescription glasses really didnt give me the right information. I dont think she should be in the bakery department if she doesnt like answering questions or if she doesnt like helping customers. I felt like she was being rude and I dont think she have any experience in customer service.I went in the store on Friday morning and I didnt see the pastries were out on displayed. At the time it was around 11:30 am. I asked her when itll be ready. She told me that it will be ready in 30 minutes. I was shopping with my son and I end doing some groceries while waiting for it. When 30 minutes has passed, I asked her if the pastries were yet and she said it will be ready in an hour. What she should have done was asked someone else who does the baking but instead she decided to guess the wait time when itll be ready. WHEN A CUSTOMER DECIDES TO WAIT FOR THE PASTRIES TO BE READY, YOU NEED TO BE LITERALLY CORRECT ON WHEN ITLL BE ACTUALLY READY, NOT JUST GUESSING WHEN ITLL BE READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This really upsets me because I wanted to get some pastries for a picnic but I end up leaving the store and I didnt even bother buying the groceries either.Another incident is today. I encountered a bad experience. This is also the same lady that helped me. She wasnt being courteous while assisting me. She gave me the impression that she didnt even care about the customers if they were being helped. This is the reason why I decided to write this incase someone else might encountered the same experience as I did. Also, she should know that if theres customer around either shopping or waiting, she shouldnt be talking about her personal life like school and what time shes clocking out for work. This is so bad and improfessional. I cant describe this any furthered with this same lady that worked there. I hope the store will hire another lady who has more in customer service skills. Someone who is polite and will provide the right information.

Sam Woo Barbeque
514 Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91803, United States
A great place for Chinese Restaurant if you dont mind the ambient and just want good food! Its basically a hole in the wall! Its always busy. However, if you have to wait to be seated, its a very short wait because people go there to eat - No must no fuss if you know what I mean...lol... pretty much everything taste good here! You get a lot and the price is much lower than elsewhere. There are different chains of Sam Woo restaurants. However, Ive gone to several different ones in the past, but the taste is much better at this location. The other locations have better setups but for me I cant eat or taste ambient. I want to enjoy my food... Thats why I would drive over 100 miles to come to this restaurant! I think that says a lot! Here I highly recommend Beef Chowfun, Shrimp Chow Me (either crispy or dry, they are both good. Just prepared in different style. The CRISPY style- The noodles are pan fried to a crisp like a nest and then shrimp and bok choi (Chinese vegetable) stir fry with white sauce are poured into the noodle nest. The DRY style - The noodles are soft and stir fry with shrimps, green onion, brown onions, and soy sauce.) The wonton noodle soup is very inexpensive here! Its $3.99 or $4.99 for a huge bowl, which is enough for individual meal! Sorry I cant remember the exact price. I actual remembered it at $2.99 but didnt want to say it because its been awhile since Ive ordered it a year ago...lol... youll have to see for yourself. Oh, forgot to say that the wontons are filled with shrimps, which is hard to find nowadays to find to good food for such inexpensive pricing!Updated as 4/11/2019 - I just went there to pick up a to go as I was in town and was surprised to see that the prices on the menu were raised by $2 - $3! Wow! Personally I think that is just too high to stay competitive with the other restaurants in the area, especially if it is lacking in ambiance. The food do taste great but I personally cant say I will be dinning here at the new menu prices though. I had left my old review up, but please DISREGARD ANY REFERENCES TO GOOD VALUE FOR YOUR $$!!!

Baccali Cafe & Rotisserie
245 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
Baccali is a local favorite. The restaurant offers a large and varied menu popular in Hong Kong and Cantonese areas of southern China. There are Western style dishes featuring a mix of their house chicken and steak, fish or lamb. Those come with a choice of pasta, rice and vegetable. The majority of the menu comprises Chinese dishes, with a section of Malaysian and Indonesian fare. Like a lot of restaurants of this genre (they are popular in this area) the food tends to be high on the salt content. So if you care, tell them to limit it. Additionally, unless youre dead set on eating Western food..skip it and get Chinese. It tends to be better prepared. The only Western item they make fairly well is their house chicken. The eel frid rice and their beef chow fun are both good here by the way.

168 Market
1421 E Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801, United States
Normally I love 168 market, but I felt very othered in this one. It first started when I was in checkout and a customer behind me was talking to the cashier about my items (I cannot understand the language but the body language and pointing made it obvious) and they laughed. I can only assume its because I had mostly instant and hot food, but I will never know what they saidThe cashier seemed to be repeating something and I only understood the word bag and not anything else, and given how she was just chatting with the customer behind me and also not looking at me, plus I didnt understand her, I didnt reply. She eventually turns to me and angrily asks if I want a bag, which I felt bad about because I realized then that she might have been asking me if I wanted a bag the whole time and I didnt realize so I reply with sorry, yes please and she basically threw it/flung it at me. I that point gave a little look to the person I came with to see if they saw what happened, and she proceeded to be nice and say something along the lines of thank you, have a nice dayI returned a day after to accompany someone else and got the same cashier, I asked her if my 168 card was okay to scan as some of the barcode had rubbed off, and instead of reaching for the card, she very quickly pulled my whole hand and almost twisted my wrist, it honestly hurt a bit but mostly surprised meI like to believe the best in people and hope it was a misunderstanding, but it was a bit much. It left me feeling not welcomed by herI have never had issues with the one in walnut. This experience makes me appreciate the employees there a lot more
