Shangri-La

Just ordered food from them in the last hour. I ordered Won Ton Soup, broth and Won Tons only. I also ordered Mongolian Beef, mild, no peppers. And I ordered Shrimp Chow Mein. What did I get?........ Won Ton Soup with vegetables in the broth, and the Mongolian Beef was spicy. The Chow Mein was fine, amazing enough. The mistake was not done by the cooks. I seen the order slip after I got home. The person at the counter put the simple straight forward order in wrong. The person at the front counter has very poor customer service skills. She's a young woman, late teens to very early 20s. Long brunette straight hair, wearing round rimmed glasses. She was wearing a black shirt with the words, 'Gainesville Speedway', on the shirt. When I walked in she was on her cellphone playing. She didn't even acknowledge me until I was standing in front of her at the counter, and barely acknowledged me when she did. I gave her my order, and went and sat down to wait. She immediately went right back to playing on her cellphone. When the order was available, she gave it to me, again barely acknowledging me, and went right back to her cellphone. The food there is good, but with this young woman at the front counter, the front counter service sucks!!!!

The shop is a little hard to find tucked in with a bunch of offices but is really good. We had the Vietnamese grilled pork and shredded chicken sandwiches and they were both really tasty. I was also surprised at how big the portion was too. Seemed like each order was 2 sandwiches from other places. The flavor of the shredded chicken and grilled pork were great! The pickled carrots were perfect too. Didnt take very long for them take prepare the order. It is also nice that you can see the people preparing the orders right behind the counter and the person at the register was super nice. The dining area is limited. There are 3 or 4 small tables inside and a few tables outside. The food and service is great so still a great place for takeout.
Shepherd & Sims

Great first impression, the quality of food is definitely in line with expectations. Service was accommodating and friendly.More suggestions and observations than criticisms:1) The second round of drinks (Negroni and Martini) were either stirred too long, or the bartender used ice that was sitting in the Well all night. They have a barback, but it falls on the bartender to communicate with the barback or simply refill the Well with fresh ice themselves. If they expected orders to slow down after the first rush, half a container of fresh ice would suffice.2) Also, drinks sat in the service Well for at least five minutes as multiple people (manager and other servers walked past or continued their closing sidework). The bartender working the Well should communicate with someone to run drinks that sit in the Well for a lengthy amount of time, but failed to do so. Considering bartenders are tipped out from servers, it is their responsibility to facilitate the flow of drinks to the dining room. It is unfair to the servers and gusts when a bartender becomes complacent knowing they are tipped out regardless.3) I prefer to see Servers doing their closing sidework (e.g. making roll-ups and polishing silverware) in the back of the house and away from the guests.Overall, a strong first impression at a top class restaurant.
Steamers Grillhouse
31 University Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030, United States
My wife and I have eaten at Steamer's Grillhouse many times since I posted my first review 18 months ago, so I think that an update is long overdue. My original review was for lunch on the patio. This one's for dinner in the main dining room.I love their fresh grilled halibut, especially when it's in season. Unfortunately, they don't take it off the menu or give us a heads-up when it's not fresh. At dinner last month (January 2023) our server said that the fish was fresh, but it obviously wasn't. It was overcooked, dry, flavorless, and seemed like frozen fish to me. At least the organic mixed greens on my side salad were as good as usual. My wife really enjoyed her scallops and risotto. The four scallops were plump, juicy, and perfectly grilled, and the risotto was rich and creamy. It's a great combo, and she's glad they added it back onto the menu.Service has been mixed on our recent visits. It's been efficient at times but occasionally slow. I realize that it's tough to find a sufficient number of high quality employees these days, so I hope their service will get better in the near future. The Matulich brothers have done a good job growing their family business from a small storefront to a large white tablecloth restaurant, and they've built quite a loyal following over the years. It's been inconsistent lately, so I'm reluctantly lowering my rating from four to three stars. Nevertheless, we'll continue to dine at Steamers… at least for now… with the expectation that it'll improve.ORIGINAL REVIEW: 8/3/2021After more than 40 years of consistently great food and service, this family owned and operated restaurant has earned its rightful place as a Los Gatos institution. This review is just for lunch, but we've also enjoyed happy hour and dinner at Steamer's. Their unique Shrimp BLT is one of my favorite items on the lunch menu. It's made with oven roasted jumbo prawns and applewood smoked bacon and it's served on toasted focaccia bread with a generous helping of fries. Other menu items that we've enjoyed over the years include the roasted mussels, fresh grilled halibut, tortilla soup, clam chowder, fish tacos and prawn tacos. My wife wishes that they'd bring back their scallops and risotto dish. I'm hoping for a return of their fresh Alaskan (instead of Pacific) halibut. The dining room decor is looking a bit dated, and some of the upholstery has even gotten a little threadbare, but that's all understandable given how restaurants are just struggling to survive these days. Many of the servers at Steamer's have worked here for years and their professionalism is apparent. This is a white tablecloth restaurant but the food and wine are fairly priced given the quality. Reservations are recommended, especially if you want to sit outside.

Glad that the noodle shop finally opened. Waiting for Shepherd and Sims.
Orens Hummus
1 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030, United States
I could not wait for one of my favorite restaurants to open in Los Gatos. During the construction of Orens Hummus I would stop by at least once a week to see how soon it would be until they opened. When they did, we were one of the first customers. What a surprise we had coming. This restaurant has had problems since it opened. We kept going back thinking it would work out the kinks but that never happened. You have to wait a minimum of 30 plus minutes for your food. That is a long time for a take out restaurant. Several times when we brought the food home, the entire order was not in the bag. Last week took the cake and we decided if we want Orens we will drive to Palo Alto or one of their other locations. We were having people over for dinner. We decided to order from Orens. $150. When we unpacked the food, the pitas were burnt and soggy inside. The gluten free ones were so flat you could not open them to put anything inside. I packed up all of the pitas and the next day I took them back. The manager told me they were supposed to be like that. One side burned a dark brown and they were supposed to be wet and soggy inside. That is the way they are served at all of their restaurants. No they are not. This establishment needs to get its act together if they are to survive. Most of the time the place is empty. Try one of the other locations. They are all 5 star.
Coup De Thai
137 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030, United States
If you come for dragon ball because of the lawsuit like I did, you are bound to be disappointed. But if you come for good food, you are in the right place.Let me cut to the chase. Given the lawsuit alleges that this dish causes chemical burns, I was expecting hotter than usual spicy. Dragon ball is a disappointment to this extent. It is objectively mild by any standard. Yes, I am used to Sichuan food. But that is also why I was ready to taste something that is hotter than that. Other than this point, the dragon ball is quite tasty if you want some spice but cannot take too much heat.As we only had a quick lunch, and I am not versed in Thai flavors. So, I will skip commenting on food. (The other dish we ordered was Thai BBQ pork with sticky rice. It is also well prepared, although personally I would like it better if meat is marinated more. Other than the dipping sauce for the BBQ, these dishes taste closer to milder, Southern Chinese than Southeast Asian food. The coconut ice cream they say they got from a shop on the street, on the other hand, has a unique texture that we like very much. We went to the shop afterward, but they do not sell that flavor.)The restaurant has a welcoming air, elegant lighting, and is very stylishly decorated. (Food plating is also delicate.) Given this is downtown Los Gatos, there is amble free parking nearby. We arrived a little after lunch time and got seated quickly. The server is very attentive as you expect from a South Asian joint. Overall, Coup de Thai is a very pleasant place to eat.

Used to love this restaurant when it was in Campbel - somehow it felt more authentic there. Now it felt mostly western, but everyone around us seemed to enjoy their food and have a good time!Kimchi on the table was very good, and we got more after asking.Had to ask for soy sauce... and unfortunately it was needed.Dinner portions are very big, lots of beef/chicken/pork, so we could take leftovers home and enjoyed the food some more on the day after.Cheese wonton was full of cheese and very crispy.Wonton soup - with many wontons and beef, the beef was very tender, but the broth was quite tasteless. Added to it lots of soy and the sauce from the kimchi, which gave it flavor, so now we liked it.Mongolian beef - was tasty, a bit heavy on the onions but meat was tender, and not at all spicy. As I said, huge portion!Tangerine beef - was very tasty, although beef was a bit dry, but full of flavor. Again, not spicy at all.Cashew chichen - was a bit bland, but we added soy and some hot sauce, which gave it the necessary umpf. Nice amount of cashews, too!Sweet and sour pork - was nice, and as expected. We have to come back for the wings and for the spare ribs, they looked very appetizing but we were SO full!

Hot and Sour Soup was one small step below the best I have ever had! Seriously, it was awesome and almost had me crying because it so much like what it is supposed to be...not too thin, sour/tangy, spicy. Would go back to this restaurant just for this soup. Perfect.Mongolian Beef was near the top of my list of best Ive ever had. Tender beef and as there should always be - there were the little white ricey noodles under the meat and onions. Slightly sweet sauce. Maybe a bit too much onions, or else I was just a little to sensitive from still reeling over the soup.Beef and Broccoli was good as were the Chicken dish we got and the House-made Tofu dish. These though were shadowed by the first two.A little trouble in communication of our orders, but not a big deal.Very nice place which made me feel a bit underdressed in jeans and t-shirt, but not really an issue. I just felt like I should be dressed better. Could be remnants of the soup.I would highly recommend this restaurant which is not usual for me in terms of recommending Chinese restaurants other than Peking in Athens, GA - that restaurant by which I judge all others.
Oak & Rye
303 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030, United States
Five-star food. Just about everything is superb.Sometimes there's a little “we know we're cool and now think we're a little better than everyone else” vibe. That's always sad when that happens to the best spots. But USUALLY I can get away without feeling like that walking in. But a few years ago, we ate in, but my mother wanted some food to go (she wasn't with us) for us to bring home to her afterwards. They came back and told us everything was put in, except “Chef said we cannot make the beet salad to go.” When I asked them to double-check that, they came back and shortly repeated more of the same, explaining something about the quality of food and certain things being better for take-away then others. But I mean, good pizza is kinda important to have hot and not reheat too long (or it'll dry out and the crust will get hard), and that was fine to take home. And I explained we lived walking distance away and it would be enjoyed right away. Anyway, that didn't matter apparently. But at the end of the day, I don't care what you're charging. It's friggin' pizza. And we're now actually talking about a beet salad from a pizza joint. Are we really getting this serious now? It was just…more of this nose in the air stuff that's not in the spirit of what I wish this place was.Anyway, for those bothered by this and not put off by our own reactions to this (which I get, to come degree, if that's you), we then came up with a simple solution. I asked for the beet salad “for here” before we left. When it came, I said I was full and asked for it to be boxed up to-go. Problem solved. Small victories in life, ya know?Anyway, don't let that stop you from enjoying pricey but fantastic pizza and a good atmosphere. Honestly. That other situation was years ago anyway. Still super lame. But whatever. The food NEVER disappoints. That's the important part. And fun side note: the bathroom is worth a visit. Hard to say if it's cool…? I don't know what cool is, clearly. But it's definitely a “thing.” Enjoy.
