Kansui Ramen (Westlake Village, CA)
2728 Townsgate Rd #6, Westlake Village, CA 91361, United States
Ramen connoisseur that's been to Japan and traveling around US. Focusing on Ventura I'm stuck between Hoshi Ramen and Kansui.Kansui has better Egg and stable broth.Hoshi Ramen has better broth/character (extra egg too). Both are fantastic options and recommend going back and forth because both provide different experiences.Atmosphere in Kansui nicer while Hoshi more hole in the wall but hole wall feels more homely. (Preference)I've been trying both for the last 4 months before this review. I just really love ramen and want to give my thoughts on who has best ramen in the area. Both are top notch but provide different experiences, I prefer hoshi cause broth more defined but damn Kansui egg easily the best very impressed.I wrote this review on my 3rd visit, each time ramen was great qualityEDIT June 6th: I'm a mega food critic because I care but since then this review felt bad because I can't properly rate on google. My initial review still stands, it's very consistent ramen and that's what they are selling. Could broth be better? From a ramen fanatic, yes but that's not the market they are aiming for. Around here competition is limited and people's pallets are limited. I've come here after work so many times and it's exactly what I expect, 9/10 ramen with 10/10 egg.Maybe big ask but if owners (lovely staff btw they remember people

The cold soba noodles are some of the best Ive tasted. Like ever. The chicken is marinated, not dry at all. Their chili oil tastes SO GOOD and just adds so much flavor. One of my favorite noodle shops Ive ever tried.

Went here with my girlfriend last night. We had been wanting to try this place for some time. Took the drive from Calabasas solely based on the pizza pictures we saw here on Yelp.Sad to say, but this place is irksome. In short, its polarizing because the food is great, but the format is really really wrong. I dont feel you can charge those prices and not offer full service. I do not want to stand in line, order at a counter, and walk away with a $90 bill for 1 salad, 1 pizza, 1 pasta, & 2 drinks. Happy to do so for proper table service.Money aside, the big issue we had was the HORRIBLE TIMING. Our salad, pizza, and pasta dishes were all on our table within a few minutes. NO PACING WHATSOEVER, but kudos to your speedy kitchen. This was really off-putting and annoying. We were two bites into our salad, and a Server is hovering over us with our pizza, offering no help or suggestions how to accommodate them, forcing us to scramble to make room. Um, ok...theres no space left on our 2-top for the salad setups, drinks, and a large pizza, so I guess just pack up our salads please? Which is what happened. A bite into the pizza and heres the pasta! So, basically, which dish would you like to eat cold? This is where I regretted signing for a 20% tip ahead of time. It was made very clear to us we were not getting service, just plates being dropped off, like at a California Chicken Cafe.Important to note, when ordering, this place uses one of those iPad/Square ordering systems, complete with the awkward tip-us-right-now-while-I-stare-at-you dynamic. Their automatic tip calculations are based on the after tax total...that gets under my skin. YOU DONT TIP ON TAX. When I was emailed my receipt, I saw the bill also included a 2.5% Kitchen Love HIDDEN FEE, which is also included in the total, and therefore the tip calculations. So, we tipped on tax AND a secret fee! Thats just plain deceptive and unappreciated. Im sorry, but I know what its like to wait tables and work in a kitchen. For the prices youre charging, pay your staff better if you want to show them some love, instead of sneakily baking it into your iPad ordering system...which Im sure no one sees in the moment. This technique is widely unaccepted. Patrons dont like Guilt Fees.We left there discussing our grievances, instead of the great food we had just consumed. After we got home, we wanted to see if others thought the same, and these themes resonate throughout many other Yelp reviews here. The nail in the coffin was the passive aggressive and patronizing tone in the ridiculous Yelp review responses from the owner. After observing him work the floor during our meal, and then reading his replies to anyone not giving him a glowing review, Im sure well choose a less confrontational dining experience next time. The place was jam-packed, so Im sure business is good, and a review like this will get buried amongst the many ridiculously generous 5-star reviewers. So, I dont expect things to change here. When you have food that good, but leave the place focused on the bad, theres a real problem.Which sucks for us...we probably wont be back unless something changes.

This is my favorite market and I make an effort to drive from Malibu. What I love about this market is how clean it is and how much effort they put in during the worst part of the pandemic to keep everything neatly and how well they follow the protocols. The products are great and they have everything so theres no need to drive to another market. I give it two stars because of the way I was treated by the cashiers. The first time around three months ago. I was in line and there was a blonde lady in front of me. when she was next the cashier great her and asked her if she had a reward phone number, she did so the cashier typed for her. When it was my turn I pushed my car (full of Pellegrino for a big party) the cashier asked me “ how many are you taking?” I told her that I took everything from the shelf but I wasn't sure how many cases in total. Then she started pushing the glass cases and counting in a hurry pushing it around, I guess she was too tired so I decided to carry it out for her. By the time she was done I inserted my credit card and I asked her if I could type my rewards number to what she answered: “well now it's too late maybe next time.” From the beginning she didn't even say hello, she did not ask for the rewards number and lastly, she was not happy but ANGRY to count the cases so to avoid miscounting the cases I had to do the lifting for her. I didn't say anything I was just disappointed. I don't know her name I just know that she's Latino.Tonight I went to get my groceries for the weekend. A Caucasian man was in front of me and Brian the cashier said hello to him, then he asked for his reward number and typed it for him. For some reason, I thought oh my gosh he is going to be rude to me because I saw the way he looked at me and, that's exactly what happened. He started scanning my items in a hurry. I said HELLO, he answered without even looking at me, he's didn't asked for my rewards number I just type it for him. He handed me my receipt and I said THANK YOU!What's wrong with this picture? I'm not blonde enough for this market? Is this a problem? Don't I deserve to be treated with the same respect as the rest? The managers though are great. Every time I needed something they will go above and beyond to help me. However, the management has to educate their staff! I don't come here for just one sandwich. Every time I come here and spend a lot of money. My money has the same value as your other costumes regardless of the color of my skin.I am very disappointed and sad.
Boccaccios Restaurant
32123 Lindero Canyon Rd #110, Westlake Village, CA 91361, United States
We arrived for our dinner a little after they opened. My wife doesnt like to be seated outside so they gave us a table inside next to the window. It was a warm day and the temp inside was uncomfortably hot. We asked if they could turn on the a/c. We were the only ones seated inside and the busboy went off to relay the message that was never delivered or ignored because the a/c was never turned on. I guess one couple sitting inside didnt warrant wasting the energy. After a long wait we were given some bread and water. The bread was as hard as a rock. Im not exaggerating, they brought us a basket of bread that must have been sitting out from the day before. Not edible in the slightest. We asked for a basket of fresh bread and by the time our meals came, they had still not brought us any bread. My guess is that someone spaced out and didnt make any bread for the night. The only part of the visit that was okay were the drinks, thank God.As we ate our mediocre bland dinner, the manager and several staff were inside with us and must have forgotten we were there or maybe they just didnt care because they were going on about love lifes and not holding back on any details. The manager (male) was especially boisterous and completely unprofessional. I made some noise to give them the chance to maybe realize they had forgotten about the customers in the room, but that didnt phase them. We couldnt get the check fast enough.Weve lived in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks since 1994 and have never had an exceptional meal at Boccaccios. After that night and considering what a great location their at, I can only hope the owners sell the restaurant or go out of business so a much better establishment can take its place. I just cant believe its been there all these years. What a waste of space.

Move over Nobu, hello Q sushi! Super special place that you can enjoy for special occasions or drop in after doing some Target shopping. The sushi is outstanding and their staff is very helpful and nice. I had some dietary requests and the manager came over to me and made sure that my needs were met. He meticulously checked on me throughout my time and i appreciate the extra effort. I’ve been back several times since and have continually received the same experience. The cocktails are delicious. My favorite dishes are the udon noodles, king Hoang roll and the toro sushi! Omg mouth watering!!!!
Mediterraneo
32037 Agoura Rd, Westlake Village, CA 91361, United States
This wasn't our first visit here and I do have to say it's been consistently below standard. While the cocktails and appetizers were great. That's where it ends I had ordered the lamb chops I asked for them rare, my wife the swordfish and my mother the linguini and clams. As our entrees were being delivered and served. My mother was served first than my wife, their dishes look great to the eye and smelled delicious, lastly I was served and I could t believe what I had on my plate. 3 lamb chops that were less than appetizer size ( no more larger than a half dollar. ( I wish I took a picture ). I couldn't believe it. I looked over at my wife and asked her where the rest was ? Being it was my wife's birthday and I had my mother with me I decided to take the high road and just deal with it. I cut into the first chop and it was so over done it was drier than a piece of toast. I cut into the second and at least it was pink inside and the third was cooked to my asking but had so much fat on it I had to chew on the bone to get any meat . The server came over and asked if ever was fine... I at first hesitated but did mention they were over cooked. She offered to have new ones recooked but I declined as I didn't want to wait for the new ones. The manager finally came over and said that he would take care of it and not to worry. He also offered to recook new ones again I declined by this time we were almost done with our meals. He ( the manger ) offered if we wanted their warm butter cake at no charge. We thanked him for the offer. As we finished up our dinner I decided to try some of the broth my mothers dinner was made with. It was so salty and flavorless I don't know how she managed to eat her dinner without saying anything. When I say salty... it was like drinking a glass of salt water. Thank goodness my wife did say her fish was ok. As the server cleared our table we declined any after dinner service but she insisted that we have free dessert on the manager. We were not really in the mood for dessert but it was already served. The to die for butter cake was just alright. We received the bill and to my surprise the manger lived up to his promos and took care of “it “ alright. He paid for the dessert. Yep. That's right. Just the dessert we really didn't want in the first place. I don't mind paying for quality food at any restaurant however I do have a serious problem paying 42.00 for lamb chops that were over cooked and so small that I could compare them In size to a chicken nugget from McDonald's. Not sure but perhaps a bit of quality control might help the situation. As well as a new meat purveyor or move items off your dinner menu when they are not of the proper entree portions. The only reason I'm giving two stars is for their service, at least our server was attentive and pleasant.

Well, if I had reviewed this place right after I came here for the 1st time several weeks ago I would have rated it higher. That time everything seemed perfect, the rice was fluffy & perfectly cooked, the chicken sate juicy & tender. It was kind of wow because I had resisted coming here because the menu seem very generic & limited based upon Thai cuisine and there are a lot of good Thai restaurants in the area. Ive eaten here twice since that 1st time and Im sad to discover the inconsistency in service & food prep quality because I thought this might be a place that could become one of my regulars.Today the rice was undercooked to the point of feeling the raw rice kernels crunch in your teeth. And the chicken was rather dried out. The last time I was here several days ago, I got embroiled in a service nightmare. I ordered a salad w/o onions. It came with onions so I sent it back. No problem. Well, the salad never came so I went to the counter and told them, so supposedly they took care of it. Went back to eat my meal. Still the salad never came. Ate my entire meal and waited some more. No salad. So I had to leave. Nabbed a waiter & asked for a refund on my salad. She resisted & informed me that the salad was ready. She went looking, no salad. I said just give me a refund. Well, I have to talk to my manager. She goes away and never comes back. Finally I nab her again & tell her to keep my $7 but Im never eating here again. She goes off again and has a long conversation with another person. Apparently about the salad. But still no one comes back to deal with me. I finally get the 2nd waiter & I get some long unbelievable explanation about the salad. (I mean, cmon, you had 3 chances to get this right & still no salad). To her credit, she did refund my entire meal but even that didnt make up for the hassle.Maybe that whole thing was a one time fluke but probably not. The inconsistency of the food quality, though, I think is a more unforgivable thing. And so disappointing since it was so good the 1st time.

Its difficult to enjoy a meal when youre being cheated. We live a few blocks from this restaurant, and my wife likes their war wanton soup when shes not feeling well. She instructed me to get her soup tonite.I ordered by phone from their online menu which says War Wanton soup for 4, clearly listed as $10.95.I ordered by phone & drove over to pickup. When I arrived, my order was waiting. The young man at the cash register presented the bill with the soup charged at $13.95. I told him that the price listed in their online menu was $10.95. He disagreed with me. His sidekick told me that was the price for 2. No, thats the price for 4. Another of the cash register gang volunteered, thats the lunch menu. No, thats the price listed on the website. I paid & left.In my car, I rechecked the online menu on my phone which confirmed War Wanton for 4 $10.95.I went back in & presented my phone. The full family was assembled at the cashiers area - father, sons, two officious well dressed, jewelry bedecked older women.I showed them the menu with the entry. One, then another examined the phone, then another. One argued that it was not the right restaurant, but the website clearly showed the name of the restaurant,?telephone number, photos, etc of the restaurant. Another went back to the lunch menu argument.Bottom line: They cheated me out of $3. The experience did not make the soup taste very good.
JOi Caf Coffee by JOi

I have been plant based for 8 years. Ive eaten at hundreds of vegan restaurants. I am also the author of a NYT Bestselling and James Beard award winning cookbook. I first had the pleasure of eating at Joi Cafe before I knew anything about them because I did what every vegan does when they roll into a town theyre unfamiliar with: type the word vegan in Google maps.I believe in grading vegan restaurants solely upon their merits. I do NOT believe in grade inflation because theyre vegan, theyre trying, theyre nice people (other than customer service). Indeed, I find grade inflation to be at least partially responsible for the amount of meh vegan restaurant options and, now, their rapid demise, which ultimately hurts the movement by reinforcing the notion that vegan food = bad food. In sum, the overwhelming majority of vegan restaurants Ive tried in the past 8 years have been... not great.I say all of this to bolster the credibility of my evaluation for Joi Cafe. My first meal consisted of their Caesar Salad and Broccoli Cheddar Soup. I instantly knew that whoever created these dishes understood not just flavor (the soup), but was a master of texture (the salad). I delighted in each caper buried between conveniently sized hunks of purple kale; was soothed at the sight of nori (an ingredient not usually found in Western establishments) sprinkled between the greens; and utterly amazed by the tang from the dressing.Do I like everything on the menu? No. Jois menu is far too diverse to please every taste every time. But I love so much of the menu, I go back at least 5 times a week. Sometimes its the Caesar Salad, today it was the bagel sandwich, and tomorrow, itll almost certainly be the Acai Bowl (the best Ive ever had--the creator was smart enough to understand you cant just put the toppings on top!). I love that there are plenty of options that do NOT have alternative meat--just plain beans, potatoes, greens, and fruit. The dishes on this menu werent thrown together by someone who watched 17 YouTube videos and now thinks they know how to cook (which is what I sometimes think is the case for most vegan restaurants). Whoever designed the food on this menu knew what they were doing, employed skills that obviously took decades to develop. If you found the food tasteless, bland, or subpar, its likely you went on a very very very bad day (which is hard to believe since Ive gone hundreds of times and NEVER experienced this) OR your tastebuds are defective.
