29 Palms Inn
73950 Inn Ave, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, United States
If you want to get away from it all, The 29 Palms Inn allows you to do just that - stress, technology, bad news, bad politics, office politics, smog, superficialdom...under the rug it goes. Sure, they have wi-fi, but who needs it here? There are far too many positive distractions at The Oasis of Mara where The 29 Palms Inn is situated. The grounds here are rustic, beautiful and full of life. They grow what they cook and it tastes like there is something magic in their garden soil. There is also an energy here which is magnetic. It makes you come back, because you miss it when youre gone.Take a walk around the oasis with a Bloody Mary (they call it a Bloody Mara, and it is exceptional) in your hand. Its a simple, but brilliant experience. The palm trees around the oasis are like little, natural desert corridors which lead you to your cabin, the vegetable garden, the hen house, Cinderellas carriage, a game of horseshoes, the bar, the pool, or the bush. Take your pick - The grounds of The 29 Palms Inn is riddled with enticement.I have been coming here for over 20 years, and every year I fall more and more in love with The 29 Palms Inn. I even got married here. Try topping that without having the on/off switch for the Aurora Borealis, or a friend who owns an Austrian castle.I was brought-up in a big city, but the Inn helps me forget all about that and enjoy its gorgeous outdoor splendor, its cool bar, charming Adobe Cabins, and the best restaurant in the High Desert.Theres a TV in the rooms, but you probably wont need it. Take a dip in the pool instead, or a trip up to The Joshua Tree National Park, which is just up the road from The Inn, and can leave you feeling as though you might be on a better planet than the one you are used to. The night sky from the park looks like several layers have been added, and your eyesight just got hawkish.Book well in advance to avoid disappointment. When you arrive, making yourself at home will be really easy. Its only when you take a look around do you realize what you have left behind, and why you needed to.

Tasty food in a wonderful environment. Keep in mind that they have a rotating menu, so check their website to see what they're currently offering. Also, there is no takeout & avoid coming when you're short on time. I enjoyed David's winter noodle bowl & the coconut curry is a must try! My husband loves the vegetarian burrito and the Vortex Burger. I appreciate that their prices are more reasonable than other establishments. Love walking around the grounds before eating here.

Holy Forkin Shirt!First time in this morning and I was completely blown away by everything! We got the turkey avocado sandwich, the blueberry coffee cake, banana chocolate chip muffin and the carrot crumble muffin.I have never had a sandwich this good in my entire life, it was flavorful and packed with meat and veggies with a bit of spicy kick! The bread was perfect combination of soft with a slight crunch around the edges. It was so large I had it for breakfast and lunch. The blueberry coffee cake was nothing I ever expected and everything I ever needed. I don't know if it's some type of soft sweet cornbread but it also has a cheesecake like layer of crunch at the bottom and a layer of blueberry. Dusted in what I can only imagine is powdered sugar from the heavens. The banana chocolate chip muffin was the best banana chocolate combination ive ever tasted. The perfect crumbs topping paired with the yummy chocolate chip and the banana so perfectly balanced was out of this world. The carrot muffin was simple and delicious.I live in San Diego and am trying to convince my friend to drive back out in the morning for more hahah. I will never NOT stop here. If you are even considering stopping anywhere in 29 palms make this your first stop!I am a forever customer after this amazing experience

Dhamma Vaddhana Vipassana Meditation Center
68561 29 Palms Hwy, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, United States
Wow. A wild ride for sure. This is not an easy 10 days but it is worth it. The analogy of this being like spiritual boot camp rang true on many levels. You will likely be challenged in ways that you have not been before. 9-10 hours of seated silence each day reveals many things about your mind. At times, when I was going to the hall for a sit, especially later in the week, I felt like I was going to watch a movie of my life in HD and was unsure whether it would be a comedy or horror. In sustained silence, the unconscious mind has a way of reawakening and sending up into view past memories that you must face and observe.I am going to address a few things that I did not see covered in some of the other reviews. First, as others have pointed out, the grounds are spectacular, especially the walking path at night. Simply stunning landscape out there in the desert. The rooms are adequate with AC and the beds are a bit hard. The food for lunch was fantastic. Whoever is cooking back there either runs a restaurant or should be.The schedule is demanding and I do suggest you buy in fully. Meaning, that you go the meditation hall for all of the sits. This will ensure you get the most out of the experience.I was and still am totally impressed and inspired by the people who shared the experience with me. A few times I would open my eyes and just marvel at the courage of the people there to do such an intense and challenging experience. The world is full of convenient distractions for sure, that are intoxicating, and for people to want something beyond that stimulation is amazing. So, Im sending my love the July 3-14 group, you rock.I would also suggest reading up on Buddhist teaching/philosophy before hand if you not that familiar with some of the core teachings and ideas. While vast in scope and varied across many traditions and sects, the core teachings of no-self, impermanence, and suffering are staples of Buddhism. I find the section on Buddhism from Huston Smiths book on the World Religions from the early 1960s quite good and would recommend that as a good entry point. The course is run by audio and video recordings from a 10 day course back in 1991 by the Vipassana teacher Goenka. He is quite a teacher. A great story-teller with a very sharp mind with deep insights and theological nuance. I found his talks to be compelling especially the ones from days 4-9. I would suggest keeping a bit of an open, critical mind to some of his claims though. He seeks not to convert for sure which he states quite often, but does slip into making some claims that are worthy of some deeper inquiry. For instance, he believes in reincarnation, that he has friends he is certain to have known in previous lives, and that his specific teaching of this ten day course in India was somehow prophesied 2500 years ago. Also, the discourses on morality were not very nuanced. However, as stated above, he is a very gifted story teller, has a brilliant mind, and his defense and teaching of the Dharma as being scientific, rational, and non-sectarian is deeply admirable and much needed in the world. Theological quibbles aside, he is a teacher of deep wisdom and knowledge, and his sharing of the dharma is inspiring. So, if you want a secularized meditation experience, you will not get that fully here as the whole practice is framed in Buddhist teachings, but I do not think that will be a problem for you.I could go on and on. In total, this is a really life changing experience in many ways. You will learn that meditation is not about feeling calm and relaxed. You will learn that meditation is really about training the mind to become less prone to blindly cling onto pleasure or to have aversion to pain. You will see your habits of mind in both directions very clearly (towards cravings/away from aversion). In conclusion, to the teachers, managers, volunteers, cooking staff, etc, thank you so much for your service. Your dedication to the well-being of others is deeply felt, appreciated, and inspiring.

Mara
73511 29 Palms Hwy, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, United States
Ill start off by saying that this is by far one of the best restaurants in town. Hands. Down. The food is amazing and I love that the menu changes every month! It is evident that the owner cares deeply about quality and delivering exceptional service. Now on to the real reason I am writing a review:I dined at Mara with a friend last night to celebrate her birthday. As we were enjoying our meal, I noticed all of the ways that Colleen was providing exceptional service to each and every table. A table near us ordered a steak to share. When Colleen brought it out, it was in two different plates! A small touch, but I was floored at this attention to detail. She then provided the exact same level of customer service to each person there without wavering or skipping a beat. It is rare to find that level of customer service nowadays much less here in 29.Colleen is the best!

Delicious food, good vegetarian options, and extraordinarily kind staff! We were going to go around the corner to grab a few beers to have with dinner and the restaurant insisted on giving us a few Coronas from behind the counter (not for sale) for free instead.

Cactus Trails Cafe

I give this place 5 stars all the way through. They serve great quality food in a small cozy clean atmosphere. they are fast efficient and very kind. I must in good conscious say that I stopped going there for quite a while due to the fact that I simply loved their eggs Benedict, however I do not know why it changed to something resembling a plate of milk to serve to a cat. 6 months later we finally returned and I tried my all time fav again. It was just too thin and runny and nowhere resembled the yellow creamy sauce that I craved. I take full responsibility however, because I could definitely have asked for a taste prior to ordering. I have just made the decision to forgoe eggs Benedict in the future and still make it our go to place. They have so much great food there that I will quit being an entitled spoil brat and continue to enjoy the best breakfast/ lunch spot around. Not even the larger city of Yucca Valley has better quality. I will no longer go without. I will just leave eggs Benedict for another try in the foreseeable future. So no longer will I judge over one type of sauce, especially when their biscuits and gravy are amazing. Thanks

Palms Restaurant
83131 Amboy Rd, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, United States
The first time I stepped into the Palms I knew I was home. The ambiance is unique - warm and dreamy. The food is great - I keep coming back to compare Lauras burger with the one at the world famous Pie n Burger in Pasadena - still too close to call.Yeah, the service is inconsistent, but thats not why you go to the Palms. When we go to the Palms, James brings us our drinks without asking and hands us the pad to write our order on. I take the order to the kitchen and once in awhile I come back with a plate for someone I know at the bar. Its casual, homey, family. If you want great service, go ahead, go to Dennys. Splurge.Need a new vintage shirt or some vintage cowboy boots? A DVD? You can get these all at the bar. If you want a book, wander across the street to Lauras Wonderland Books, come back to the bar to pay for anything you pick up.Sunday morning is the best - bloody Marys, breakfast, neighbors, honky tonk piano. Most of us locals call it church, and if church were this much fun, everyone would go.Dont miss the back yard, sit out there on a mild day, watch the sun move across the face of the Pinto Mountains. Look around. Rub your eyes and ask yourself, Is that really a guillotine?

I ordered a falafel burger and it tasted kind of like a vegetarian option at taco bell. Water tasted like it was scooped from a public pool and the fries were very lacking in flavor.Wife ordered the sqrl burger and it was almost inedible, flavor was off and just overall unpleasant. We ordered the sesame lime wings and they just tasted over fried and dipped in hoisin sauce. It took 30 minutes to get any food and there were only 5 other people in the restaurant. 50 dollars poorly wasted

Twentynine Palms Commissary - Defense Commissar...
1025 Del Valle Dr, Twentynine Palms, CA 92278, United States
Decent Commissary selection for the middle of the desert. Generally good fresh fruit and veggies and even meat, and always find some treats when it comes to their special sections like Japanese curry and rice and even German foods. I don't usually find the place too busy, except maybe later evenings on the weekends, or lunch hour during the week there's usually a wait at the fresh deli and sandwich counter. And fresh sushi is fantastic! Thanks to Covid-19, sometimes shelves are empty and delayed being refilled, especially when it comes to eggs, cheese, and water (but we've always managed to find TP at least). The next closest grocery would be Starter Bros and a DG Market. A huge Walmart with groceries and a Vons can be found down the way about 20-30min from base, in Yucca Valley.I also wanted to add that they now offer curbside pickup which started Sept 2021. Real convenient! The only struggle I've faced is when they do a substitute and it's not something I would have chosen, you'll have to go in the physically return items at the customer service window, and most of the time you won't catch it until you're already home and putting everything away. I hope they'll update the system to one day be close to something like WalMart has where you can choose to decline a substitute chosen ahead of time.
