Red 88 - Davis
223 G St, Davis, CA 95616, United States
I have been very disappointed with my last few visits in this location. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants for years. I would come 3-4 times a week. Last time I came in I was informed that the special I received through email for the special Monday red 88 deal was for dine in only. No where does it state that in the email and I didn't find out until I drove all the way over there. Then you have changed your stamp card process several times from the cards to the phone number to a credit card now. What if I don't pay with that credit card every time I come to the restaurant. The waitress didn't seem to care about any of my concerns and brushed it off as no big deal and it's not my problem. I haven't been back since.

I come to this place about twice a month. I always recommend it to friends and family. The food is good. Very casual environment but nice. The staff is friendly.I had a bad experience there today. While my family and I were dinning in, we were asked if we would like appetizers. We wanted to get to the main dishes right away, so we said no and that we would like to order the main plates. The person serving us explained the menu to us. He mentioned that the dishes we were ordering (all banoo kebab plates) come with salads or yogurts. So, we chose the salads/yogurt we wanted. He said the actual dish would take 38 minutes to prepare, so he said he will bring out the sides of our dishes first. We thought it was a good idea. All of my family members understood that the sides come with the main dish price based on him saying they are part of the main dishes. We go to pay and apparently we were charged for the salads/yogurts as separate items. In my opinion this was a sleazy way to up sell the customers. We were tricked into ordering appetizers basically. The server presented the sides as they come with the main dish then charging separately (maybe hoping the customer would not question things too much..as we did not at first until I looked at the check closely). So, if they tell you something comes with your plate be absolutely sure that it does. It is not about the money but the principle. Now I feel cheated. Should not trick loyal customers like this. It is a dishonest sleazy way of doing business. It was a very dirty move. We made it known to the person who pulled this trick before we left.EDIT: Running out of food was NOT the issue. You exclusively told us that salads or yogurts come as sides of the main plates (meaning the price of the main plate includes the price of the side). THEN, when we went to pay you charged us about 35 dollars extra for yogurts and salad that were again supposed to be free sides because you exclusively said so. You misled us. Again, it is not about the money but it is wrong to take advantage/trick your loyal customers or any customer for that matter.
Kobe Mini Mart
213 E St suite a, Davis, CA 95616, United States
I hate to give this shop a low star but if I could give them a 0 star i would. We like this shop but were not allowed to stay and shop due to the service dog we had with us. There is a sign on their door that said Service Animals are welcome but in reality they asked us to remove the service animal. We tried to explain that this request was against ADA rules, but the individual insisted that we take the dog outside because pets are not allowed. We even pointed it out that according to their own sign that service dogs are welcome however the individual still asked us to leave. We left the items we had in our hands and left. We even tried asking to speak with the manager but the individual there said the manager would ask us to leave too. This was reported to the ADA and until they comply with what their own signage states we can no longer shop here. I hope others that support the ADA and other service animals no longer shop here. I will have to use amazon for my Japanese items from now on.Update:In response to your reply, the only thing I can suggest is that you train your employees to recognize the difference between a service dog that is wearing a service dog vest and an emotional support dog. Your employees should also be trained on the questions that they are allowed to ask to determine the difference.
Kims Mart
628 4th St, Davis, CA 95616, United States
Nice family mart. Some stuff are sold on the pricy side. You can get some asian stuff like seasonings, snacks, frozen food, instant noodle, decors, fresh vegetables, etc here. They have kimchi which is good. Porcelain bowls are pretty. Manager lady seems nice. Hmmm, just a very small corner shop... nothing fancy…
Yuchan Shokudo (formerly Yakitori Yuchan)
109 E St, Davis, CA 95616, United States
I understand this restaurant is popular but I have to say the service was quite bad. The host was very rude from the moment I walked in. He said there would be a 1-hour wait to get a table but he seemed too aggressive in the way he talked to me. I didnt walk under the rain to be treated poorly in this restaurant. I saw people waiting outside for a table but I didnt want to wait outside because it was raining. The host said I needed to get a drink and I explained I had to wait for my two friends to show up. Frankly at this point I wouldve left if I didnt have to wait for my friends. When my friends arrived the host was again rude to them then we approached the bar to order a drink and the host told us to wait at a table next the entrance, but he talked to us again in a very aggressive way. When he was gone we were finally able to order our drinks at the bar and then go back to the table to wait. Both of my friends were surprised to see how rude the host was with us and other customers too. Was that because he was stressed maybe because the place was understaffed? I have no idea but I think customers should be treated better. I guess the policy of the restaurant is being somewhat aggressive, they dont accept some credit cards, no Google pay or anything like that, you need a key to use the restroom, etc. Finally after 45 minutes we got a table and our waiter was ok and I must say I enjoyed the food. But would I go back to this restaurant? Not really. A restaurant isnt only about food. Service matters. And this place needs to improve a lot in that aspect.
Sit Lo Saigon
424 G St, Davis, CA 95616, United States
It was not until I discussed this with my friend that I decided to write a review to let future customers know of the possible inadequate service they might experience here as my friend and I had experienced. The reason my friend and I first came to try out this place was because it was new and the reviews all had 5 stars, not to mention that there was a promotion on Instagram saying that they would have 10% discount running through the week of Feb.19-25. Well, when we went to the counter to pay for our order, my friend pulled out the exact post from Instagram for the discount, and the girl behind the counter looked at it and said, Oh, we discontinued that. My friend pointed to the exact words on the post continued to the end of the week, and the cashier said, Yeah...we just stopped doing that.?????? Okay, no matter, its just 10%. So we paid for our food, and I ordered alongside my pho a side of fried donuts, and my friend a Thai tea drink with her pho. Well, when we sat down at our table, I looked at my receipt, and the girl had overcharged me on my fried donuts. The donuts were $2.00, but she had charged me $3.00. Okay, no problem, Ill go talk to the cashier. When I went to the same girl behind the counter, she said nothing, just looked at my receipt after I mentioned that she overcharged me, asked for my phone number and said that I would receive a text. ??? I paid in cash, and if I hadnt mentioned how I would receive the money, she would have never given me my refund.Well, that was that. But after 10 minutes of eating, my friend had not yet received her Thai drink she ordered, and it was not until she went to the cashier again that the girl behind the counter exclaimed among the lines, Oh! I forgot!...My friend would have never received her drink had she not asked. The food was mediocre as well, we had ordered two phos, but they only gave us one plate of bean sprouts and basil, not to mention they were droopy and not fresh at all. Also, do not order the fried donuts. The quantity was so small my eyes almost popped out. The noodles were all stuck together in the broth as well, and we had to shake them out before eating. The meat quantity was nice but the meat was chewy and 3/4 of a piece of meat consisted of fat.I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Except if you want to get scammed.
Huku Japanese Bistro
417 Mace Blvd D, Davis, CA 95618, United States
I absolutely love this place. It is my go-to for sushi in Davis. If you enjoy raw fish, Huku is the better option. Most other sushi restaurants mainly serve rolls, so often times their nigiri and sashimi is not as fresh as it should be.First, everything is delicious and well prepared. I enjoy sashimi and nigiri and their seafood has always been fresh. I always get their saba, uni, and hotate. Also, their amaebi is great! The head is not fried and caked with flour to the point that it just tastes like oil and grease. Instead if is the perfect amount of crisp so that you may eat the eat like a chip. The tail is savory and creamy. Definitely give it a try if you enjoy shrimp.I am not usually a fan of bento boxes with teriyaki, but Huku does it right. For most places, the sauce is overwhelmingly sweet and thick. Huku has a more subtle flavor so that you still actually taste the natural flavor of the meat.I am not big on rolls so I will not review their rolls. However, of the ones I have tried, they have been good.As for the service and atmosphere, 5 stars all around. They are attentive to the customers needs but also dont check in too often where it feels like your dinner table conversations are being interrupted all the time.
Zen Toro Japanese Bistro
132 E St #100, Davis, CA 95616, United States
I used to love this place. We used to have group dinners of our lab here before the pandemic, and if anybody new in town asked me about Japanese food, Zen Toro would be my top recommendation. We've heard rumors lately about degrading of food quality in this place, but that didn't really affect our preferences at all. HOWEVER, what happens today totally reverted our view, and I will never ever have food or recommend this place to anybody again. So here's the story. It's Valentine's Day-me and my husband planned to have a nice dinner. For two people still cautious about covid, we decided to order sushi takeouts from Zen Toro. Now comes maybe the biggest mistake I made today-making the order on a Chinese takeout platform called Xiaocun. We use this platform quite often to order from Chinese restaurants like Chengdu Style and Tasty Kitchen, so thought it would work as well for Zen Toro. The food we ordered is in Pic.2 just to show it is possible to place the order on Xiaocun. And then we wait. Pic. 1 is a timeline of our waiting from placing the order till the order was cancelled by Xiaocun's stuff. That cancellation is after our call with Xiaocun, and the stuff said Zen Toro has already called us because they couldn't make it. The truth is, me and my husband literally stared at our phones during the whole two hours of waiting, and we swear there wasn't a single second Zen Toro ever called or messaged. Instead, without any notification, we stared at the dynamic map of the driver delivering food all around Davis, faking to be waiting for our food.My heart sinked as our Valentine's Day plan got ruined. But at the same time I have so many questions in my mind for Zen Toro (for Xiaocun too, but it's the business between Zen Toro and Xiaocun). What exactly was the reason you couldn't make the order? Why you said you called but never called (don't say you didn't have our number cause it's on the address) ? Was it because we used a Chinese platform? Was it because you felt we might not able to understand your calls so “why bother”? If you are too arrogant to make orders from Chinese platforms like Xiaocun, why do you let them keep your entry available? It's 10pm on Valentine's Day, and we are still busy in the kitchen trying to make up the dinner. You can blame it on the platform, Zen Toro, but it's still your fault if you cannot manage your business collaborations.
Lazi Cow
407 G St #4, Davis, CA 95616, United States
A dessert/milk tea place that embodies the quirkiness of Davis. They have a variety of tea/dessert drinks, pizookie, brick toast, food, and now alcoholic boba! Its a very casual cafe environment that has board games, hip music, and Davis/Cow-town themed decor. The brick toast here is their main specialty: half a loaf of bread, toasted so the pieces are crisp outside but soft inside- paired with sweets and syrup/condensed milk galore. They allow you to customize the ice cream flavors- green tea, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, etc. It takes them 20-30 minutes to make and is best shared. The alcoholic boba here is just okay- the boba itself is very sweet and maintains its texture in the alcohol but the drinks were just ok. I tried the green tea heineken and it was a little too sour for me and the sex on the beach was sour as well. Somehow, the drinks mixed together tasted better? But they have more options for alchoholic boba than most places Ive seen. I think the milk tea was subpar but hopefully theyve improved in the past year. This is fun a place to hang out with a large group and enjoy dessert. Order a variety of desserts, take pictures on the cow and swing, and play games if youre still waiting. Also- they support student groups with fundraisers! A very Davis boba place.
Four Seasons Gourmet Chinese Restaurant
1601 Research Park Dr, Davis, CA 95618, United States
I almost don't want to give it 5 stars because I want it all to myself. Definitely Davis' best kept secret. When my husband first told me about a Chinese in a gas station I have to admit I was apprehensive. It kinda screams sketchy ? it's a classic case of not judging a book by its cover.I have tried multiple dishes here and never been disappointed. Their beef dishes are a favourite of mine, the cumin, Mongolian and curry being the best I've triedI've also loved their string bean chicken and general chicken. The biggest problem we've found with this place is figuring out what to order, every time we want to try something new but we also want to order one of the gorgeous dishes we've had before!!There's one particular woman who works there a lot, maybe she is an owner ? But she is so kind and makes you feel so welcome! Even thanking us for bringing back a friend with us the most recent time we visited. The pricing is incredibly reasonable, it's actually one of the best places for me to get low carb eats when I'm doing keto as a lot of the plainer dishes come just meat and veggies - rice or noodles is always an optionThe always lean towards their beef dishes as the beef is incredibly tender. The portion sizes are large we always have lunch the next day sorted. When I feeel like something for a treat / a bit carby the generals chicken is perfect!I genuinely feel it's the best Chinese in Davis !!
