Olive Garden Italian Restaurant
11966 Los Osos Valley Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, United States
Had a terrific evening and supper at the Olive Garden last week. We came to have supper at a very busy hour for the restaurant. Never the less. We were seated immediately despite the full house and not having a reservation. All the staff members that I encountered were awesome! All had smiles and positive attitudes. Our waitress was fabulous as well. Not to mention her thorough knowledge of the menu was exceptionally helpful to us. My girlfriend is very particular about her likes and dislikes when it comes to food selection. Without a knowledgeable, patient, understanding and genuinely helpful waitress such as our waitress was. Menu decisions and really the entire dining experience can be a disaster. I am pleased that our dining at the Olive Garden was a positive experience in every way! We both highly recommend this Olive Garden in SLO for that Last Minute Spontaneous, Rare Opportunity for the two of you to eat out. I am certain that much like us. You will enjoy a Delightful, Casual, Relaxing, Delectable, Joyful and Overall Positive Dining Experience. I Highly Recommend and Encourage you to stop by! I also must recommend that you request the Blackened Chicken if you are ordering any of their menu items with chicken. The Chef prepares a Phenomenal Blackened Chicken!!! For that alone. I will be back for more whenever I am able! The blackened chicken also puts them over the top as far as my rating system goes as well. Earning themselves 5 out of 5 Bolts...⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡Well Done!

Came here with a party of three for lunch when we were in town. It was just over twenty dollars for two meals and a soup á la carte. Very affordable!Pesto & Sun-dried Tomato Chicken SandwichI had this and I loved it. It was filling, but not in the Monty Python/Mr. Creosote way. Served on house-made focaccia bread, which was very tender and toothsome. It gave the sandwich a great chew. The sun-dried tomatoes were mild, but they added tartness and tang to a sandwich which would otherwise be overwhelmed by the garlic and basil in the pesto. Plenty of chicken and cheese on the sandwich. It came with a house salad, dressed in oil and balsamic vinegar over fresh greens. It was an incredibly healthy meal, all things considered. I would usually reserve this level of enjoyment for things that are conspicuously dire for my constitution and waistline, like cinnamon rolls or ice cream sundaes.Miso Salmon SaladThis was everyone's favorite. My wife described it as ‘bright,' like a shining star or precocious child. I think she meant it was glorious and radiant, like an angel. The dressing was delicious, so good that after she had poured it in the salad, I used my sandwich to scoop the remnants out of the plastic cup it came in. My wife loved the bits of mango and the amount of salmon. She and her mom were huge fans of the edamame, though she preferred the Armenian cucumber for the crunch. Overall, an excellent summer salad.Cafe SaladMy mother-in-law has this, though she was hesitant about the goat cheese. We usually go in for Gorgonzola or another stinky cheese. Compared to these, the goat cheese was very mild. She picked out the pear, but I thought it was tolerably good with the balsamic vinaigrette. (I let nothing go to waste!) There were loads of pecans and slices of avocado. She did say that the dressing was very tangy, so she recommended starting with half dressing, as it could be off-puttingly pungent, especially if on a first date.Sausage and Kale SoupI ordered a cup of soup because I was hungry and I tend to overdo it when in this state. I enjoyed the soup, which was savory with nice peppery bite. It was lovely with the bread and reminded me most of the zuppa tuscana soup at Olive Garden.Overall, I lovely place for lunch and we definitely recommend the summer menu!

Happy hour choices are amazing. Our wonderful server was also a former Hawaiian transplant & served us with great Aloha spirit. While Lure is a chain, their great Pupu selection is Ono. If one is Akamai, then one should run here for their amazingly Happy Hour. The last time I had Pupus this good was decades ago in Honolulu itself. They offer Ono-licious eats that harken back to my halcyon days, when I was at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We are now Pismo locals, but with our past Hawaiian backgrounds, we are well versed in island eats and Pupus. Getting here early before the rush [~4pm / Monday], not only gets one some serenity, but one of the first cracks at the expansive & Oh so ono Happy Hour menu. Here is what I/we ordered, ranked in order of being Ono.1) Tuna Ponzu- a savory CA take on Tuna Poke. It actually improves on the past local HI formula, with the addition of creamy local Avocado, Crunchy Taro Chips, and a tangy/citrus/ spicy sauce. It was amazing and was recommended by our great Akamai waitress from Maui. Mahalo Makena!2) Charbroiled Oysters- while they use local Morro Bay Oysters, somehow they blow Morro Bay chefs out of the water with their more traditional take on BBQ Oysters. It is a hybrid of Brooklyn style seasoned with butter, garlic, paramesian, breadcrumbs, & parsley, along with the flare of being Charbroiled, which adds some smokiness. It is really hard to outdo the best of Morro Bay, but somehow they outperform. If one loves local Morro Bay Oysters, this is a must. The Oysters are cooked enough to not be overpowering, and more like baked clams.3) Basil Clams- While it should not matter all that much, the cast iron pan that these clams come out on, help keep these sweet clams hot and succulent. These clams furnished a sweet note and the Basil helped temper or moderate the seafood taste. It had a sort of like a Thai inspired savoriness to them. With some lemon, the clam broth furnished yet another great way to use ones bread up. The Clams went well with the Oysters.Ironically, the clam shells were so nice, it was a shame to throw them out. While I knew they could not be Pismo Clams, I imagined that they likely could take like what I dream that they could taste like. After all my years living in the SLO area, these are also by far the best bivalves that I have had the pleasure of consuming.4) Calamari- While I am a Calamari lover, the pieces offered did not fill my stomach, nor mouth all that well. While very tasty with the furnished sauce, the size was rather anemic. They did not have the great hearty chewy mouthfeel of similar offerings on the Morro Rock oceanfront places in the Bay, but the sauces were much better. Fortunately, it was quite tasty.5) Sliders- Of course, something in a Happy Hour feast has to come in last, and their take on the sliders proved that turf is not a strong point here.Refreshment:Orange Season Beer- While I was not sure of the exact brand, I was given a nice tall frosty glass of this refreshing beer. It had citrus, hops, and some bitter notes. Ultimately, it helped cut through the heavy seafood, garlic, and buttery notes, and cleaned the palate between HH bites. It was also pleasantly discounted. While fashionable, I rather not distract my palate with complex cocktail/wine flavors, nor fog my mind with too much alcohol.Salad: Strawberry Salad- It was one of my Honeys favorite tasty & healthy Vegan salads that she had in a long time.Deserts:1- Chocolate Cake with hot chocolate sauce, sitting next to a nice cold scoop of Vanilla bean ice-cream- This was almost a desert that can get one into a legal mess and could be worth fighting for. Lawyers on both sides of a divorce could fight on the merits of who will win the custody of either the cake or the ice-cream. My honey was granted almost 90% of the cake to consume at will.2- Strawberry Basque Cheesecake-light and fluffyMahalo!

Bamboo Bamboo
1049 Nipomo St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, United States
Decided to try this place as there are not many Chinese restaurants out here. I had a good experience overall. Upon walking in the staff welcomed us and assisted us. The building its self was beautiful. However, the atmosphere felt lacking a bit. It felt more drab and not full of energy. Granted the restaurant was not full at the time so that could be part of it. I will say I very much enjoyed most of the food. The food came out quick. We ordered the rangoons and they came out hot and crispy but upon biting inside felt it a bit cold. The rest of the rangoons came out fine, still tasted good! I had the egg flour soup (cup) and it was a good size portion for the cup size. Came out hot, flavorful and I loved it. For entrees, we ordered honey walnut shrimp and the sichuan spicy chicken with a side of white rice and fried rice. The honey walnut shrimp came out nicely cooked and covered in glaze. The sichuan chicken was the same except there was the right amount of spice to it. It is one of those dishes where the more you eat the spicier it gets rather than just a lot of heat right off the bat. It allows you to enjoy all the flavor of the fish. Fried is and white rice was good, it’s pretty hard to go wrong or mess up those. The portion size Was normal. My partner says they give a lot. However, I like to eat a lot so I found it to be just right. Overall, enjoyed the food and would like to come back. It’s a nice addition. I feel SLO is lacking good Chinese restaurants.

Ziggys

The best new vegan restaurant! At least thats what a sign says inside. Im not surprised, their food is delicious, but Im not impressed by the sign. How many new restaurants are there in the area? Then out of those new restaurants, how many of them are vegan? Im assuming not that many. Also what are they classifying as new? Is a restaurant still new after a month, 6 months, a year? Whats new?!?! I need some direction here. Are new restaurants classified the same way as newborns? A baby is a newborn up until 2 months. After that they are just born. Is it the same for new restaurants? Or are new restaurants like newlyweds and no one really knows when theyre not newlyweds no more. Or are new restaurants like the news. I feel like the news is not new news as soon as the next days news comes out. I honestly dont know what to think anymore. New is starting to lose all its meaning to me. I wonder if I opened a newspaper stand, could I get a sign that says, best new newspaper stand? Im assuming Id be the only newspaper stand in the area...who reads newspapers anymore? Even if there was a competing newspaper stand, Id definitely be the best new one. Maybe one day Ill do that, so I can finally be the best at something. Anyways, I wasnt impressed by Ziggys best new vegan restaurant sign, but I was thoroughly impressed by their delicious food.

How have I gone this long without reviewing HSD? Throw a walnut shell in the air in SLO and its bound to land on a sandwich shop. This one is consistently the best. HSD is one of those great old institutions in SLO that holds up to the hype and in some ways theyve even gotten better in recent years. If youre a well traveled person (and I assume youre traveling reading this) then you know every city has a great local food place that has a certain it factor. You miss it when youre away for an extended period of time and its one of the first places you hit up upon your return. In my view, HSD is that place. My personal go-to is the Italian on a French Roll no mayo, no onions, no Cheese add avocado. Thats my guilty pleasure happy place. Now whats improved are the sodas in the soda fountain. I normally skip the high fructose fizzy water but no joke, HSD has some of the best sodas on tap. The Orange Soda is especially good, real sugar too.Now things to know: There is OFTEN a line out the door and the SLO HSD is a very small establishment. Calling ahead or going on weekdays / off times is advised. They have a paper check-box menu system that often confuses newcomers. Grab the menu (usually outside by the entry ramp), fill your menu out and then go directly to the cashier, theyll take it from there. If youre confused at all, theyll help. Lastly, there IS a much larger and slightly different HSD out in Baywood (Los Osos). If youre on vacation and have a larger group with you, that may be a better option for you. Its in a very beautiful area so its not like its a trek just for the sandwich. That one serves burgers and fries as well. Its slightly different flavors (I still prefer the charm of SLO) but its definitely just as good. Good luck and enjoy!

Goshi Japanese Restaurant
570 Higuera St #155, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, United States
An authentic Japanese restaurant who focuses on delivering the highest quality of sashimi.Food: 8/10 (9.5/10 for sashimi). I shave to make the distinction here because their fish on another level - mostly they directly fly them over from Japan. Thus, price also reflects this, but the quality is amazing.Order any fish, and you won’t be disappointed, but we liked: o-toro (buttery tuna), katsuo (the fish flakes that you see on octopus balls), ma-aji (ma literally means “real” in Japanese), kimedai, salmon, and so many - see my photo!Having said that, I gotta say their other dishes aren’t their focus and you can tell by the stir fry beef that’s a bit too salty. Though, the soup for agrdashi tofu is very thoughtful. It has these mushrooms they add great flavours. If you get a set, you also get these lovely pickles.Their proud in authentic food also shows when they said their fresh wasabi (the literal plant they flew from Japan) is not as fresh as it can be and refuse to serve it. But their pickled wasabi is quite interesting flavour wise and still give you the kick.Price: first, it’s hard to give a price because if you don’t live fresh authentic fish, you may not value this highly. But for a town like this and in California a few thousand miles away from Japan, I’d give it a 8.5/10. We had way too much food and it was $220 for three including tax.Ambience: 9/10. Calligraphy on the wall, the chef and servers wearing traditional clothing, the decorations. It even smells like a sushi house in Japan.Service: 10/10. From stealthily removing the used wet tissues to adding matcha tea multiple times (5 times at least), they really care. The chef also came around (we were at the bar) to ask us about the food. It’s an incredible experience. All in all, it’s an experience. You don’t need the most expensive order - start with something small and see if this is your vibe. But I’m sure if you love fresh authentic fish, you won’t be disappointed.

Sweetie Cup Tea House
1118 Chorro St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, United States
A very good approximation of a Taiwanese style bubble tea (boba) shop. The owners work here and the staff they hire are friendly and nice. It does get crowded from time to time since its popularity growing, but the wait is usually short even during a rush because they know what theyre doing. I dont really like my bubble tea to sweet so I usually get black tea with boba (the black, tapioca balls) and ask for no additional sugar. That said, if its your first time is might be worth going all out and getting black tea with milk (its all non-dairy, but you probably wont notice a difference) blended with boba. Its sweet, and pretty nice, just remember the boba are mostly for the texture although they are sweetened themselves. Some people dont care for the taste and/or texture, but its not enough to put you off the tea/milk smoothie. The food is different, and may not be what youre expecting, but is pretty good. Boba tea places usually have flavors that run a little sweeter, saltier, or more sour than restaurant food and this place is no exception. Personally, if youre not getting boba or want some kind of snack, Id recommend the snow fluff. Get the toppings that sound good to you and enjoy something significantly lighter than ice cream. The tea they sell to take home is fine, and they have cute gifts, but for the more elaborate stuff be prepared to pay. Its not a 99 cent store. I think its mostly decoration anyway. The seating can get tight, but is usually adequate. I really like the drinks, food, and staff, and I bet almost anyone would. They also do just tea and just coffee. I highly recommended this place to everyone!

Thai Boat

This is the best Thai food Ive ever had! And Im not that huge a fan of Thai food to begin with but this food was delicious!!I went in with my boyfriend for the first time right before they were closing. The line was very long (and I understand why- completely worth the wait) but the food came out pretty quickly. I ordered the Wontons which were very yummy and their pom-du (I think its the peanut one) which was magical! I wanted to get the Thai tea so I inquired about the caffeine level- I didnt want to stay up all night so I skipped on that. While seated the servers were very attentive and even brought me a sample of the Thai tea. They noticed we had finished our rice and even brought us an extra side of that too!Wonderful wait staff and fantastic food!

Nates on Marsh - A NRL Food Group Restaurant
450 Marsh St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, United States
First time here and it was outstanding. It was nice to be warmly greeted by Nate as we walked in the door. The signature cocktail list is very good (I recommend the Martini di Raddi) as is the wine selection. For appetizers we had the Polpette (meatball) and potato and leek soup. The soup was excellent but the meatball was a level beyond that — the best single meatball serving we’ve ever had — it’s large and can easily be shared. For entrees we ordered the Cacio e Pepe and Mushroom Carbonara. We loved both. The Cacio is a little lighter fare — perfect. Our service was spot on throughout our dinner. The vibe in the restaurant is just our style — nice energy without being too noisy. We will definitely return.
