This review pains me a great deal as I have known the owners for nearly 20 years. I used to frequent the establishment when I first moved to the area in 2002; but that tapered off after a few rather unfortunate incidents involving poor service in and around 2010. The company began to employee younger and younger servers who did not seem to understand customer service, which I often consider a lost art form.I would periodically visit the establishment for convenience sake as I had adjusted my expectations accordingly. Slowly thereafter I would cease visiting the establishment, opting for other sushi places in the area or getting my orders as to-go orders to avoid the underwhelming customer service.I left the area temporarily in 2020 and returned in 2022. I decided to give Good Choice Sushi another shot and I was surprised that I was receiving good customer service and good sushi; but this did not lost long. What was most unfortunate was that the sushi chefs appear to control the establishment. For some reason, the establishment did not seem to have an actual manager, instead leaving the managerial tasks to the sushi chefs, which was quite unfortunate and many of them were quite rude and cocky.The straw that broke the camels back was after I visited Good Choice sushi after a short hiatus. There were only 2 servers on one of their sushi roll nights. You naturally expect some delays when specials are running as opposed to the nights I would go there absent any specials as I was visiting the establishment on a frequent basis, either Friday or Saturday and either a Monday or a Wednesday. I was a good patron and I tip well, so I expect good customer service. That night, however, the server was what we in the restaurant business call in the weeds, which happens; but in such cases, adjustments for poor staffing need to be provided. I ordered some sushi rolls on special with some cut rolls. I tried to get the servers attention several times before the 9:00 cut-off for the sushi roll special as well as to order some additional cut rolls; however, the sushi chef refused to accept the order advising the server that it was past the deadline. The server was experienced, so she should have advocated for the customer and for the fact that it was her fault because the establishment was understaffed and she was the one who failed to come to the table despite my repeated attempts to gain her attention for over 15 minutes. That was the last time I visited Good Choice Sushi in Laguna Niguel. That was about 4 months ago.The funny thing is many of us locals to this establishment have commonly referred to Good Choice Sushi in Laguna Niguel as: Good Choice? Is it? I now have to conclude after giving Good Choice Sushi repeated attempts to overcome what many of us know about the establishment as No. It isnt a Good Choice!I am sorry, Michelle, because I believe you are a good person; but a poor restaurateur. You need to hire employees who care about the establishment and your customers. You cannot spend most of your time at your other location and leave the customers who provided you with the means to open the other location feeling dissatisfied, displeased, and neglected. Loyalty goes both ways, and I am sad to see that you do not value your customer base in Laguna Niguel as you once did all those years ago.

This place is great. I moved here from NYC and was looking around the area for just regular sushi. Everything around here was fried, Mayo covered sushi. I don't scope out authentic Japanese sushi when I'm craving sushi but I just wanted sushi that wasn't basically carnival food or gross. Many of the places in the area had questionable fish quality. This place checks all of the boxes. Cooked sushi if you want it, raw, innovative sushi, or just basic rolls. The price is also the best in the area. Always something on special. Lastly, I am extremely sensitive to fishy sushi. I'll eat raw fish but not cooked fish because fishiness is the only flavor my palette can't handle. Nothing here has ever seemed old or room temperature. The texture of the fish, the temperature, and the taste are all on point. The last place I ordered before here was twice as expensive and had a slime texture on every piece of fish. We only order here now. Great staff too. They can be long for takeout but it's because they're following guidelines and are overwhelmed, but not because they're slow.

The space is beautiful and comfy. My Hawaiian roll was pretty good. However, the sashimi combination was way too pricey compared to other Japanese restaurants. The “crunch” on the crunch roll was a bit soggy.

Lovely family owned establishment. The food tasted authentic and a gem for Laguna Niguel. So happy we have something unique outside of the typical American, Mexican, Italian and Japanese restaurants nearby… it’s a must try!

The food looks great, I got delivery through Uber eats and no chopsticks. Uber suggested calling the restaurant. When I called about this, they said they're sorry but nothing they can do - there was an option to “add chopsticks” on Uber Eats. I didn't see one. No big deal since the food looks great and I figured they'd offer a solution, but this rating is solely based on that ambivalence and customer service. I've never had this experience of missing chopsticks on a delivery, or any sushi order I can remember, which amazes me as I reflect on that. I've never eaten sushi without some ‘sticks but guess I could invest in a pair now, and there's a first for everything, right?. Maybe sushi isn't their main thing here, but the reviews sure were high. Make sure you request them to avoid this. Will adjust review if I hear anything further. Update: the sushi tastes good, still a bummer eating sushi with a fork…

I ordered a loco moco traditional style. Th ey use some frozen hamburger patty and it was fully overcooked and tasted like days old meat. Sigh... also, they dont know how to cook rice. All rice dished we ordered had very poorly cooked rice (watery and dried all at the same time. Probably from reusing from yesterday) and also tasted bad. Nobody expected sushi quality rice, but how could a real restaurant serve cooked rice in this manner. My guests are from Hawaii and Japan and they know what is like Hawaiian or Japanese style food.Although I truly disappointed and embarrassed to take my guests here, i left two starts for their french fries.I bet their fried dishes are probably decent, but i wont recommend this place.

This is my 4th time here in a month and each time is at least $80.00 with this being said…food is very good but customer service needs improvement, the waiter from today served me on my prior visit to this one as well, he's in a rush, doesn't ask you if you need chili sauce, soy sauce, etc…I asked him to bring me the biggest bowl of white rice and brings me the regular size bowl they have, my husband asked for a 2nd “Shirley Temple” drink and once hubby took a sip he said the 2nd one was missing orange juice. I ordered at the end a Vietnamese ice coffee to go, and he brings me this ugly Coca Cola container with the coffee to go, I told this waiter that I will like the ice coffee on their see thru plastic containers which if you ordered this coffee online, is served in a see thru plastic cup instead of this ugly Coca Cola cup, and he brought me this plastic tape to put over cup ?, waiter either doesn't understand English and his attitude doesn't help or he just doesn't want to make customers happy and wants to do it his way. He seemed to be bothered every time we asked for something, maybe he should not work there. Waiter not friendly.I'm not dining in anymore. The owners are completely different and friendly when you go, they cater to their customers, not this guy.

Tempura udon was really bad. Service was good but food was awful. Don’t ask for any shichi-me togarashi for your udon soup or they will just look at you confused. Unfortunately, There is nothing Japanese about this restaurant at present.
