Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine
3135 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95816, United States
On Thursday, January 11, we visited Kru/Contemporary Japanese Cuisine in Sacramento. Drawn by its promising reviews and higher-end pricing, we had expectations of a quality dining experience. Our reservation was made well in advance, with limited time slots available, a sign of the restaurants anticipated busyness.Upon our arrival, the restaurant was indeed bustling, filled to capacity both at the tables and the bar. Our order comprised Sapporo, a cocktail, and a rainbow roll, a standard benchmark we use to assess sushi establishments. However, the service immediately fell short of our expectations. We experienced a significant delay in receiving our first roll, and the wait for our simple drinks orders was even longer. This was particularly frustrating, as we sat looking at our sushi, unable to enjoy it as we had intended with our beverages. The food itself was underwhelming. The soft shell crab hand roll was tasteless, with burnt and tough tempura. Though these early issues marred our experience, we remained hopeful for an improvement. However, as the restaurant gradually emptied, our waiter seemed to forget about us. Thankfully, another server was more attentive and assisted us multiple times. Our frustration eventually necessitated a conversation with the manager, who was apologetic and offered us a gift card as compensation.Given the restaurants booking system, they should have a clear idea of how busy they will be and thus staff accordingly. Yet, the service suggested otherwise. Our next visit was today, for a takeout order using the gift card. We were again inconvenienced by the restaurant’s policy against phone orders. The wait for our order, placed in person, was an unwelcome 25 minutes, especially with a child waiting with us.To add to the disappointment, our simple request for extra ginger and wasabi was overlooked, indicating a lack of attention to customer service details. In summary, despite its upscale pretensions, Kru/Contemporary Japanese Cuisines service and food quality are average, with limited variety for a Japanese restaurant. Considering our experiences, we cannot recommend this establishment. Or, we strongly recommend NOT going there.

Oba Japanese Kitchen

To begin with, the Fried rice was not fried, it came to the table steamed. Since I ordered the house fried rice I thought that it would be the usual definition of house which is meant to be all of the stuff from the other kinds of fried rice~~to include chicken, shrimp, beef, and all vegetables offered...not the case...it was very plain, with a little corn, a few chunks of chicken and not much else...very sadly disappointing. I am from 250 miles away and it turned out that my 14 yr. old kid left their phone there...we were in a motel 60 miles away when we discovered this, and called the restaurant. The staff was not helpful at all...I even said i would send a self addressed, paid for padded envelope to have them send it to me....no, we dont do that....o.k....I said I will be back to the childrens hospital in August...so please put the phone in an office drawer or safe til I can get it ~~ no we dont do that. They said they would put it in the lost and found...that is all...this is a new Galaxy 12 phone and SO...i had to drive back 60 miles to get it since they would NOT work with me...VERY DISSAPOINTING!! Will not go here again EVER.

Hana Tsubaki is the best Japanese Restaurant in Sacramento! They are Japanese owned and operated, you go in and all you hear is the boss talking is Japanese. My family has been coming here for over 30 years, it is still the same and never a bad experience! True authentic food, fabulous quality, and locally owned.

Friendly family friendly Japanese restaurant - they have everything at this place: Donburi bowls (meat on top of rice bowl), ramen/Soba Noodles, lunch box specialist, Sashimi and sushi, and traditional Tempura & teriyaki meats. There’s a sushi bar and a big party room in the back with two front projection screens for sports viewing. I enjoyed the art framed in the front seating area. My husband and I both ate sashimi and it tasted great. My brother ordered something with teriyaki sauce smothered all over and mom ordered zaru soba with side of char sui.⚠️ Warning! 3 out of 4 didn’t get ill. Last night my husband who ordered the deluxe sashimi was sick from food poisoning. He threw up last night and feeling beaten up today. I am fine, I ate the Hamachi sashimi… apparently the Hamachi was ok. I would ask the sushi chef if the fish is safe next time! ?

Binchoyaki
2226 10th St, Sacramento, CA 95818, United States
Dear Michelin,I have considered you a trustworthy guide to exceptional dining for the majority of my 54 years on the planet. Tonight, that trust has been compromised. My fiancé made reservations this evening for Binchoyaki Sacramento based on her “hit list” of Michelin blessed recommendations for 6:15. We arrived at 6 and standing outside met Cathy, the hostess. We had reserved the bar and walked in to the restaurant and saw the 2 open chairs at the bar but were told to check in with Cathy who told us that we would be seated at 6:15 like our reservation. The patio was 50% full and another couple came a few minutes later with a 6:30 reservation and consistently, she told them that they would be seated at 6:30. At 6:15 she informed us that masks were mandatory and although I am a double vaccinated healthcare employee I agreed to mask to our seats at the bar. Over ten patrons inside including the bar were unmasked and I took my mask off after being seated and she said that we needed to mask until we were served. There were many non consuming unmasked patrons inside and I asked if that was reasonable and recommended we leave to my fiancé when she shared that it would be $25 per person to leave at that point. Stunned I agreed to stay just to see what the extent of this madness would expose. I asked what law existed now dictating masks and she responded that I was “scaring her” and should stop. I stopped. Our server was great. I didn't get her name but she said our food would be amazing and explained the menus. Unmasked we ordered a sake and a beer and put together our order. After ordering Cathy returned to us and said that I needed to stop looking at her because it was making her uncomfortable. I had not looked at her at all. At this point I was shocked and confused. We placed our order and subsequently watched the staff prepare the grilled items. I saw 3 different people handle raw meat and either open the refrigerator in the open prep area or switch to vegetables, none gloved. The grill was covered in aluminum foil and 3 cooks shared a very small space with 4-5 staff passing between during our 20 minutes there. We asked our server to prepare our order to go and paid. What we received (for $90) was 7 ounces of protein (I weighed it when I got home because it was ridiculous) and sauce and garnish. The chicken and steak were unseasoned and overcooked. The sushi was excellent. The order was not a reasonable portion for 1 person.I have lived here and dined extensively for many years and I have never experienced this level of ineptitude and disregard for customer service. On top of everything, the gratuity was included with the bill which has never been the case for a party of 2 in any city in my entire life, exacerbated by the experience and the threat of a $50 charge for leaving prior to ordering because of a clueless and rude employee. This restaurant does not deserve to be in the company of the fine restaurants our city is fortunate enough to provide. I hope this is a unique example of a restaurant that has been spectacular then terribly fallen after the rating. If not, it does compromise our interest in using your guide as a reliable benchmark. Thanks,

This unassuming little Japanese restaurant is a gem inside. The sushi is excellent but unpretentious. The rolls are not the other the top, monstrous affair that some modern sports serve. Instead they are a perfectly balanced piece of art, utterly satisfying and wonderfully delicious. Even the green tea was perfectly brewed! The service was excellent and friendly. I would go back in a heart beat.

Best Japanese restaurant in Sac Town. We ordered the special for 2. Sea Steak, Illegal Asparagus, Spicy Johnny, Marlin Monroll, and the cheesecake. The rolls were out of this world. Mikuni sources magical fish. I want them to open in PDX.
