Homi Japanese Ramen

Husband and wife team. Chinese owners. Most Japanese soups dont contain a lot of veggies; Chinese style is different with more napa cabbage. Makes the broth sweeter. The seamed rice dishes are unique. The steaming causes the flavor of the meat+dried mushrooms to seep into the rice. The steaming also makes for a more tender rice. Combo flavors include chicken+dried shitake mushroom, steamed eggs, pork ribs. The steamed dishes are like chinese home cooking. Not Americanized. This doesnt exist at any other chinese/japanese restaurant that I know of. Very delicate flavor served with a side of sauteed cabbage or what is in season with a soup. Large volume of food for the price. Gyozas are hand made fresh, not frozen. Home style Chinese/Japanese food.

Went without a reservation on a week night for dinner. Was seated immediately although the restaurant did look packed with customers. Ordered quite a number of grilled and fried food. Majority were overtly salted. 5hrs later, I woke up super thirsty from the attack/effects of salt/ MSG of the food. Now, 8 hrs later, I’m still feeling it.The fried food items were extremely salty so that the taste of the food was completely overpowered by the saltiness. The grilled food was however better. My friend had the grilled Hamachi which I think could have grilled more as it lacks the taste of the charcoal grilled food. I had initially ordered the beef tongue steak but had to switch it out for the grilled squid as it tasted off; almost like it had gone bad. The grilled squid was very tasty and juicy, well grilled and served pipping hot…if only all the other dishes were executed as well as the grilled squid. The chazuke took a long time to be prepared and the soup/broth in the pot was cleared away even before I had finished the rice. No complimentary tea was provided which all other Japanese izakaya I’ve been to in the Bay Area provides. There were only 2 servers for the entire restaurant, so apparently they seem a little overwhelmed and thus there was no service to speak of.Definitely not impressed by the overall/entire experience. I might return for the grilled squid but thought since all the other food item did not turn out well…maybe I just got lucky with that particular dish.Anyway, still feeling the aftermath of the salt/MSG after 8 hrs, which is very unpleasant. The salt completely overwhelmed the taste of the food. Usually the salt that were presented with dishes in restaurants are special/unique but I suspect this restaurant uses regular table salt and truly the amount on each dishes are ridiculously unpalatable.

Excellent variety of ramen and Don and other Japanese foods. Portions are modest for the price and dining environment is small but inviting and comfortable. The staff are professional and excellent. Do try this restaurant if youre in downtown Sunnyvale. Theres plenty of free parking nearby as well.
Seto Restaurant

A good Japanese restaurant in the Sunnyvale area. Good service, great decor inside and good food. The place seems to be a bit costlier than others in the same area.
Katana Sushi & Sake

I am sad to leave my first ever one-star review to this place. This is Americanized Japanese food charging unjustifiable premium prices. If you’re happy to pay triple the price for mall-cafeteria-level food, this is the perfect place for you.If not, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Plenty of authentic Japanese restaurants around. We ordered 3 entrees for over $80 after tax and tip, the fish weren’t fresh, the fried items were oily, cry, undercooked, and delaminated, the sauces were way too salty, the salad sat in a pool of water, the potato ball was ice-cold in the middle (common, from a bag of frozen ones, really?)Service was sub-par as well.
TANTO Japanese Restaurant
1063 E El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087, United States
This is a different style of Japanese food, not sushi or the bento box style stuff. Theyre more like a tapas place, serving up small delicious dishes. The restaurant is really small so call ahead and reserve if you want a big table. There is a parking lot so you dont have to scramble to find parking :)I loved the cozy and intimate setting of this restaurant. They have awesome private booths that you and your party can sit down and enjoy their meal. It would be an awesome place to just catch up and have some food and drinks. Their menu is quite extensive. They had a lot of options. They are smaller dishes so you would need to order more to fill up. The prices here are expensive but its a japanese restaurant, so dont expect it to be cheap. I came here with a party of 3 and we called ahead for a table. It was pretty busy on a friday evening. Whats great is, this place open late till 11 pm so you can enjoy a late dinner if you wanted to.The Food: (what I noticed is the dishes come perfect for a group of three! we were able to split everything evenly :D)Grilled Beef Tongue: YUMMY! The beef tongue was thinly sliced and thats the first time ive had it like that. But the beef was full of flavor. It had a certain richness to it plus combined with a lemon they provided with the dish, it made for a killer combo. Its the perfect savory starter.Tako Potato: HOLY moly these are hugee! These are way bigger than what i was used to for takoyaki. but they were delicious nonetheless. It had a lot of potato in it, so it was pretty heavy for a dish. The octopus pieces were cooked perfectly and they were the right amount of chewy and firmness. I would get this dish again if youre looking a for a good filler dish.Sashimi (18 pieces) platter: I forgot what this what called but its listed under the sashimi section and it comes with 6 different types of sashimi and 3 pieces of each type. this was such a STEAL. Because splitting this with 3 people was perfect and the cost of this dish was $22 dollars, so essentially we each paid about $7 bucks for 6 pieces of sashimi which a good deal. The sashimi pieces were wonderful, they were fresh and the fish was on point. I would definitely recommend getting this if you were in the mood for sashimi!Yaki Onigiri or Roasted Rice Balls ( with Salmon ): Definitely cant go here without ordering some of the rice balls and it better be roasted. The dish comes with 2 rice balls that are HUGE. They are really filling because of the amount of rice that is used for this dish. So I would recommend this dish as a great filler dish! We ordered the rice ball with salmon instead of the spicy cod roe because we heard it was a better choice. I cant speak for the other choices, but the Salmon was SOOOO GOOD! It was salted so it balanced the crisp roasted rice perfectly. The flavor combination was delicious and I loved every bite of it!Braised Pork Nagasaki style: If you loveeee fatty pork and addicting sauces than get this dish. It was AMAZING. The pork was so tender that it practically melted in my mouth. Not to mention the broth/sauce that came with this dish was one of the best things Ive ever tasted. It came close to the broth/sauce used in Kunjips braised short ribs and that was freaking amazing. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone that was pork fan, it was simply the best dish of the night.Overall the food here was spectacular. The service was just as good. Our food came out in minutes after we had ordered. I think we only waited 2 minutes after we ordered before our first dish was served to us. It was awesome since we were so hungry! I would definitely come back again, one of the best Japanese restaurants in the bay area.

The outdoor photos are totally wrong for Sunnyvale… it isn’t an actual restaurant, but just inside the Japanese restaurant Rokko.
Sawa Sushi

Really enjoyed the dinning experience here, the environment is quiet, the food is great, and I had quite a pleasant chat with the owner Steve. The quality of the food is top notch, especially the uni which is the best kind on the Japanese market. And Steves special sauces, fresh veggies and real wasabi really brought out an unique and surprising taste to the fish, which could be a bit bland just by itself. The caviar is great on its own, but together with uni, it really gives you that WOW factor. Also the wagyu is just amazing, it really just melts in your mouth! And the most important thing, you have to try the mochi there, the freshness and sweetness really help you wake right up after the protein feast earlier lol.The owner really knows his stuff, from food to Bay Area life, he knows it all after having the restaurant here for almost 30 years. If you want, you can have conversations with him the whole time, it never gets boring.Overall 10/10 place, would recommend to anyone wanting something new from just the usual soy sauce and fake wasabi Japanese restaurants.
