Red 88 - Davis

Not very good (these trendy pan-asian places usually arent). I ordered a Thai bbq-pork dish, which was literally some chewy pork, white rice, and a dish of sweet chili sauce (the kind you buy at the store) -thats it. Jenky. My friend had the shrimp wonton soup, she wasnt very happy with it, and in the end only located 1 shrimp in the whole thing. There are a lot of good restaurants in the area, so I guess thats why this place was nearly empty on a busy lunch hour. We also passed on the frequent diner punch card, not coming back here.
Panera Bread
609 3rd St, Davis, CA 95616, United States
The atmosphere is welcoming, good for studying college students, and the staff is friendly. Food is also ready in a timely manner. However, Im disappointed to discover that soup isnt served until 10:30 am, when the place opens at 6 am. But they still offer Mac n Cheese and pastas before then? How does that work? I opted for their Pick 2 with the Baja Mac and a side Greek salad. Salad was nice, but the Mac was such a tiny portion! And it was clearly made using the White Cheddar Pasta Roni from the box. Ive eaten that as a kid so many times that I easily recognized it. $10.80 for all of that and a stale piece of bread. I also always tip %20 to help cashiers and servers so all in all that was $12.80 for small portions and boxed food. I get that restaurants have plenty to pay for: taxes, employees, stock and other resources (Ive worked in plenty of restaurants and my mother has owned two bakeries throughout my life) but Panera could at least put in the effort to supply a LITTLE more authentic food. Also, if you have bread in your name, that bread better be good.

I come to this place about twice a month. I always recommend it to friends and family. The food is good. Very casual environment but nice. The staff is friendly.I had a bad experience there today. While my family and I were dinning in, we were asked if we would like appetizers. We wanted to get to the main dishes right away, so we said no and that we would like to order the main plates. The person serving us explained the menu to us. He mentioned that the dishes we were ordering (all banoo kebab plates) come with salads or yogurts. So, we chose the salads/yogurt we wanted. He said the actual dish would take 38 minutes to prepare, so he said he will bring out the sides of our dishes first. We thought it was a good idea. All of my family members understood that the sides come with the main dish price based on him saying they are part of the main dishes. We go to pay and apparently we were charged for the salads/yogurts as separate items. In my opinion this was a sleazy way to up sell the customers. We were tricked into ordering appetizers basically. The server presented the sides as they come with the main dish then charging separately (maybe hoping the customer would not question things too much..as we did not at first until I looked at the check closely). So, if they tell you something comes with your plate be absolutely sure that it does. It is not about the money but the principle. Now I feel cheated. Should not trick loyal customers like this. It is a dishonest sleazy way of doing business. It was a very dirty move. We made it known to the person who pulled this trick before we left.EDIT: Running out of food was NOT the issue. You exclusively told us that salads or yogurts come as sides of the main plates (meaning the price of the main plate includes the price of the side). THEN, when we went to pay you charged us about 35 dollars extra for yogurts and salad that were again supposed to be free sides because you exclusively said so. You misled us. Again, it is not about the money but it is wrong to take advantage/trick your loyal customers or any customer for that matter.

Have eaten here twice and tried food from the melt, Nash and proper and the Japanese menu. The melt was super disappointing, got the grilled cheese with mac and cheese on it. The macaroni didnt taste like it had any cheese on it somehow, just tasted like plain noodles. Definitely dont recommend the melt.Nash and proper was OK at best, way less flavorful than the Sacramento location. Got the cluckin hot tenders and was surprisingly not very spicy and again, pretty flavorless. From the Japanese menu I order the tuna bowl and my friend ordered the chicken karage. The tuna tasted very low quality, and just tasted fishy, no hint of tuna flavor. If youre looking for Japanese food I recommend trying yakatori instead, for poke try good friends or Zuma poke. The karage was ok, probably the only halfway decent thing Ive tried. When ordering on the app, nearly half of the menu items are listed out of stock at any time. Pretty disappointing overall after having tried 3 of their 5 menus. It also looks like a lot of the early reviews were written in exchange for free shirts and other promos so take them with a grain of salt. A lot of them are written extremely similar and dont seem super organic.
Yang Kee Dumpling
United States, California, Davis, Cowell Blvd, 邮政编码: 95618
The food came out piping hot. The soup dumpling was super juicy and both the skin on the soup dumpling and chili wontons were thin. I also ordered the sauteed green beans and I did not like the garlic slur that was used, but that could be a personal preference. The waitress was on top of it! Knew when to come by to take our order, and was super attentive to refilling our tea pot. Not even half an hour after opening on a Friday afternoon and the restaurant was filled already.

Guads Tacos & Beer

Wow. I wish this establishment was around when i went to school here. Exceptionally clean restaurant with fast service and delicious tacos at a fair price. Lively atmosphere given that is on 3rd st by campus all day and night til closing. Phenomenal birria tacos that come with pickled onions as a palette cleanser and consumme soup to wash that tasty taco down. Savory street tacos that would skyrocketted my BMI if I was still around. I will definitely make the effort to stop by in town just to get these tacos.
Tasty Gourmet
2880 5th St #125, Davis, CA 95618, United States
This place is one of those rare establishments that when you go, you feel like family. The ladies there are very, very, very sweet. My 8 year old nephew, while eating, said I love the service here! My mom, dad, sister and her kids, me and my kids and my husband came for dinner. The sweet ladies served my children, made sure everyone had food on their plates, bribed my littlest to eat so he could have a cookie, and were just too freaking nice. The food, though. Where do I begin? Oh, the shrimp and string beans! My 10 year old son ate the whole thing and we had to grab some quick to get any! He HATES green beans. He kept commenting on how he hates green beans, and he was talking about how good the green beans were until he fell asleep later that night ?The duck was perfect. Oh! The bokchoy with mushrooms! I cant even explain how delicious it was.If you dont know what youre in the mood for, or if you dont know what to try, these ladies have some really good recommendations, too. Like the Mongolian beef. Mmmmm.Go ahead and make yourself some new family and give Tasty Gourmet a try. You will not be disappointed.Sorry, no pictures - we ate too fast!
Taqueria Guadalajara
640 W Covell Blvd, Davis, CA 95616, United States
I started coming here back in 2011 when I was a student at UCD. They made the best chimichanga Id ever tasted. Since graduating, Id moved to IL and could not find an equivalent chimi. After IL, I moved to CT, and ran into the same issue. Seven years later, my boyfriend and I finally found ourselves in Davis again, and just had to go to Guadalajara for a chimichanga. Usually when youve been reminiscing about a restaurant, you build up the expectation and imagine the food better than it really was. However, we were far from disappointed this visit. The food was stellar- just like we remembered it- and the staff was absolutely wonderful and made us feel like valued guests. The gentleman who took our order- who I recognize from 9 years ago- was so sweet and jolly. When we ordered our food, he asked if that was it (we had only ordered one entree), and we let him know we were going to split the chimichanga (we can never finish a whole one alone- theyre pretty big!). Instead of pushing us to order more food, he asked if wed like our chimichanga cut for us, since we were sharing it. When we received the chimi, it was served on separate plates, and each half had its own dollop of guacamole and sour cream. No other restaurant has ever gone above and beyond like this for us! Even the wait staff was polite and very, very kind. Mind you, I am the kind of individual who is ALWAYS disappointed by my restaurant experiences, so me saying these people are incredible means a lot. Also, the restaurant hasnt changed at all in 9 years, aside from some tiny price changes, and they still serve unlimited fresh chips, fresh salsa and other toppings, and they do not charge extra for horchata nor any of their other home-brewed Hispanic drinks (theyre the same price as a regular soda). Did I mention you get unlimited refills? Needless to say, if youre craving Mexican food, Guadalajara is the place to go.
